Right, so imagine you employ someone to build you a house- on their website, you see pictures of the houses he built right at completion and they all look pretty nice. But you contact the people that bought them and they tell you that the house started falling apart 2 years after handover, but think bugger it, I’ll go with him anyway. Then he sacks the architect, replaces the licensed electrician, plumber, and carpenter that you were going to use and gets a bunch of random dudes in to design and build it, and before your house even gets completed it sinks into the ground before you can even set foot in it.

Eddie Jones put our life savings on the roulette table, and then acted surprised when his number didn’t roll. Anyone saying he’s the best man to lead us forward is just hoping his luck at the table is better on the next roll, when what we really need is someone like Rennie that was working 9-5 and squirrelling away as much of his savings as he could.

This is all depressingly accurate Spiro. I’m still a bit too upset to think rationally about any of this, but do I know that even if Eddie and Hamish do have a world class program up their sleeves for the Lions and 27 RWC, the damage has been done now and the trust has been broken.

Eddie came in to the coaching role in a blaze of glory, yes promising to shake things up, but also promising wins and saying he believed we could win the World Cup.
He then filled the coaches box with ex- league players and got rid of older players, all without explanation. Now he says he’s been clear and up front? He’s full of shit. Winning a World Cup with the youngest and most inexperienced team at the entire tournament was always going to be a massive crap shoot, at least with the team that Rennie was building we could have said that we gave it absolutely everything, if we don’t do well here we will always be wondering “what if”.
I don’t agree with much Campo says but the one remark that stands out is that the RWC is the pinnacle of a player’s career- these guys that have been working their asses off, doing what they were told to do in order to serve the team are now playing for the baabaas in England or back home watching on the couch. Can’t imagine how much that must sting.

Unfortunately so much of this article rings so very true, even if a little scathing. I was one of those that paid a lot of money to get to the stadium in St Etienne on the weekend and tbh the energy around the stadium from the Aussie fans was extremely nervous- we all knew what was coming. Dave Rennie was building something half decent, so if Raelene Castle was axed after 2019 then surely whoever made the decision to hire Eddie needs to go too?
Players that have worked extremely hard for so long with a view to this World Cup have now been shafted. Players that are out of their depth could be shattered mentally and have long term damage done to their careers because of this tournament of it keeps going the way it is, it’s not fair on both these groups of players. I think what is saddest for me though is that Australian Rugby desperately needed a good tournament, but all we’ve had so far is ridiculous selections, and clown behaviour from Eddie.

Apparently yeah, and Hooper can play there if needed. Georgia have a decent sized bunch of second rowers, so hopefully we don’t get caught out. I would have thought that putting someone like Frost on the bench could have been a good move for the first game but we’ll see I guess

Good article Brett, I agree with everything you’re saying. I’m going to be in Saint Etienne for the Fiji game and to be honest I’m pretty worried. That said, there’s not a lot of good that worrying is going to do, at this point, my expectations are about as low are we are on the World Rugby rankings so I think the only thing I can do now is just go with it and what will be will be. Who knows, maybe Eddie does have some tricks up his sleeve,

Of course everyone knew. Not sure what is going on in the wallabies camp but the media reported the match day squads for every RC game at least a day before it was announced, was surely the same for the WC squad. And the only evidence we have of Eddie “trying” to call Quade is him, and we all know Eddie isn’t the most truthful bloke out there.

Eddie is right here in 4k carrying on like a pork chop though, and for all we know he never even tried to call QC- not sure if you’ve noticed but Eddie doesn’t mind getting a bit romantic with the truth sometimes

Nothing that Eddie has done so far has filled me with any confidence at all, which is probably a good thing, as my expectations will be pretty low.
Not sure it’s fair on Will to be handed the reigns to what appears to be a complete s–t-show from the outside, but as always I’m desperate to be proven wrong.

every player is a loss to Australian rugby, in one way or another. There’s a lot of upside to keeping players around, as long as we have the systems in place to develop them properly. I hope he comes back better for the experience of playing in France though, as a lot of others have said.
