I totally agree that Football is massively dominant in terms of participation numbers but not consumers. People don’t play League but will turn up or tune in for NRL, they’re not doing that for football. My assertion was that (especially in Sydney) the League clubs built a following by being a club not a team, they were local, part of the community and people built a connection to them that is passed down the generations so that now even if you play football you’ll watch NRL (massive generalisation). Focussing on Sydney because it’s what I know best, people are proud to say their from Sydney but they don’t really associate themselves with it, we’re from the Eastern Suburbs, North Shore, Northern Beaches, The Shire, etc etc. You can’t build a club identity on that. I live in the Shire and you see the Cronulla Sharks everywhere – the local paper, Westfield, the beach and cafes, local schools – you simply don’t see that from football.

Can the A-League learn from rugby league?

Yes and no. In the early years the D1 clubs might do better but as more D2 teams experience the higher level their results will improve. Ultimately up to 4 D2 sides could be promoted and they will have done it by proving that they are better than the D1 sides. They will be better prepared for promotion and less likely to fall back down.
If there was a D2 without P/R then I’d suggest some form of league cup, either knock out or group based. Again the main reason being for D2 sides to test themselves against D1.

Can the A-League learn from rugby league?

Fair point, but we’re only talking 3 or 4 home games per team. If those can’t be tentatively booked then we’ve not learnt the lesson from last year’s GF

Can the A-League learn from rugby league?

I agree. Take an NPL team that already has male and female teams across all age groups, the local association may also have SAP/youth teams. If you can’t draw a decent crowd from the friends and family then there is something wrong with us as a football community.

Can the A-League learn from rugby league?

Don’t really follow the NRL, watch the odd game on TV but that’s all. Sadly the players are a bunch of ****heads and I don’t want my kids thinking their behaviour is acceptable. More interested in the Super League which is played by real men.
But my heart is and always will be with the round ball.
