Quality post, seldom seen.

The big step back Cheika needs to take if he ever wants to snare an NRL coaching gig

Thanks for the article Nick. Barry John surely. Welsh wizard. Tactical genius. Played a huge part in the last Lions team to win a series in NZ.(1971)

Masters of the Air: The ten greatest kickers in rugby history - from All Blacks 'wizard' to the Scot who changed the game

Could not agree more with this article. Well thought out and good use of evidence.
My beef is with the RFU who control the game to suit their agendas rather than for the growth of the sport we all love. These pirates have skewed the rules to favour slow cynical play which best supports the strengths of their athletes.
Whatever happened to the game which allows all bodytypes to have a place in our game? South African, English, NewZealand, French et al…kids alike.

Rugby’s descent into cynical play: Why neutral fans should back the All Blacks for the good of the game

Yes indeed Hoges. A News Corp lynching mob helping to depose
a professional rugby administrator (well thought of by her staff) and replaced with The Hamster, another former News Corp employee.

DENIED (sort of): Jones finally addresses Japan job report but a big question still remains

Really disappointed with Justin Harrison’s commentary. Ref bashing does not equate with intelligent commentary. Alaalatoa doubled down on the cheap shots after the game continuing a trend we have seen from Savea and Smith in recent times. This needs to stop asap as it sets a terrible example for junior rugby which struggles to attract enough refs to keep rugby viable.
As for the game, you have to know as a coach, that flooding the breakdown is a high risk, high reward strategy Therefore ,McKeller shouldn’t sook it his team falls foul of the penalty count.
It’s the Brumbies and their number one fanboy that owe the referee an apology!

REACTION: 'Reckon we'll get an apology' - Battered by the ref, bettered by Barrett, Brumbies blow Blues battle

Agree with almost all of the comments regarding The Boks stalling tactics.
Would like to draw attention to the ‘ short ‘ high balls where the Boks stand players under the flight of the ball to block the oncoming defender trying to catch the ball. This is obstruction and should be ruled as such. Also beleive the Boks are roughing up the catcher after being legally tackled and going to ground. Refer to the 2.20ap minute in the game where Bridge defuses the first bomb.

Boks coach bemoans 'bounce of the ball' as youngster's massive play secures All Blacks win

Thanks hogie. Love your work.????

The young Aussies to watch overseas in 2021

Yes indeed BG, his tone was one of a petulant, entitled and egotistical which NEVER goes down well with refs and may have subconsciosly influenced the outcome, given penalties decided the match. For someone who apeears balanced and well considered in the post match, his behavior was quite a shock.

Wasteful Wallabies draw a game they should have won

Great article. It is very evident tha you are an expert and reading your bio it is obvious why.
I was at the game at Suncorp and noticed the lack of width outside. Often our backs running towards the outside channels were outnumbered 2-1. My first thought was slow allignment ie not working off the ball which is so unlike The Abs. Loosing collisions must comprss the field as greater numbers need to be committed to the breakdown just to hold onto the ball. I have also seen other analysis from Tabai Matson which shows a formation of 3 forwards with a distributor out back which of itself compresses the field.
Succesful NZ teams mostly play wide to wide looking to up tempo and exploit the athletic advantage they have traditionally had. In reply The ABs opponents have exploited shambolicly lax policing of the offside line (this effects every rugby player not solely those in black) which allows defenders to keep on the front foot and drive attackers back. This is a massive boon to The All Black opponents who, as amply evidenced in the article above, allows the pace to be taken out of the game negating their most potent weapon.
Also notable, is the lack of big ball carrying forwards on the wing which possibly alludes to problems at the breakdown.
Finally, The All Blacks have enjoyed unprecedented success in the modern era but , judging by the lack of success at under 20 level since 2017, they are now in unchartered waters.

Are the All Blacks staring into the abyss?

Thanks Highlander. Good read. As a coach I look at how The positional coaches are going for the AB’s.
I rate John Plumtree highly and having observed his work over the years beleive him to be one of the best forwards coaches in the world. The mauls were very effective with further room for improvement. Body position in the breakdown is improving as is critical decision making.
I also beleive Brad Moar gave a masterclass in analysing weakneses in how the Walabies defend mauls and set peace. Richie Moanga’s dart down the blindsid (which you commented on) to score, is a case in point . You can see similarities in how The Crusaders exploit mismatches which comes as no surprise as Moar was an integral part of their setup.
On Ian Foster there has been out of control criticism of his appoitment. To say he does not deserve his appoitment is laughable. He has intimate knowledge of the culture of the team and has the benefit of inside knowledge of not just the sucesses but also the failings of the team. It is certainly a truism in coaching that you leran more from your failures as they are inherently more painful. You can argue that there are other coaches who may be better credentialled but you can’t argue that Foster is undeserving . Finally, modern coaches rely heavily on their assistants. Head coaches set the tone , develop a strong and consistent culture and empower positve player input and voice.
Making the most of the players at hand will , in the case of talent laiden NZ teams, inevitably lead to a high success rate. So far so good for Ian Foster but only time will tell if the All Blacks can really match it with the heavyweights of world rugby.

Some seriously good signs from the new All Blacks coaching team

Ahh let’s see. RA boss sacked whilst under attack by News Corp employees is replaced by …. a former News Corp. employee.. and with the rights contract still to be signed .. looking into the murky crystal ball the winner to be …(hint. Starts with F and ends with L)
So to end the tale, all is happy at Fox HQ… oops I meant RA HQ.

Hamish McLennan confirmed as new Rugby Australia chairman as World Rugby funding lands

Thanks for your well considered and wide ranging article Fully Tragic.
I am so glad you picked up on the News Corp. connection. A good number of those captains have a connection to Fox Sports and are employed as rugby commentators. Do they not recognise that at a time when the broadcast rights for Australian Rugby are being negotiated between Foxtel and unamed other commercial entities , then they leave themselves open to accusations of self interest and blatant interference in the governance of the game beyond their status of commentators. These men are revered in Australian Rugby and risk tarnishing that reputation which has taken so long to build up.

An open letter to the Wallabies' captains
