For those that like to look around and learn stuff.

Not on point exactly but in the roundabout.

A great article in telegraph dot co dot uk about Leinster.

Amazing transformation, back and front office.

Very interesting read for those who look outside our own shores.

Rebels face more hurdles despite $25m rescue plan, call on RA to show support and reveal hand as court battle looms

Not wishing to downplay any player, but I guess I will, with Creighton at 10, those odds make sense.
He is a good club player but he is not a super standard player for me.
But sincerely hope to proven wrong.

Super Rugby Pacific teams round 11: Harrison in for Edmed, Lynagh, White out, Rebels change entire front row

Excellent article Piccolini.
Very good research and analysis.
Congrats and many thanks for your effort.

From World Cup glory to a financial precipice. Where did the $48 million go?

Off topic, but connected.

Just read that the RFU and the premiership clubs have agreed to an extremely large deal.

If true, then there will be a bit more cash around but not sure as to what conditions will come with that cash.

The premiership this year, to give credit where it is due, is very good, very close and some very good games. Filling their stadiums.

60k to the quins and saints on the weekend at twickers is brilliant.

ASY and Ramm played for the saints

I am hoping that herbie and nucifora have some plans in place to get us going forward.

I am still trying to think of the negatives with central contracts. The states will love it definitely.

Wallabies' young gun mulling NRL switch as Rebels' future continues to cloud picture

If he goes to Exeter then that will be great for him, Rob Baxter is an incredible rugby coach.
Also their current 12 is a quality player, Henry Slade.
He will really have to be on it to get a start at 12 there.
I think it is a great opportunity for him.

Exclusive: Wallabies star weighing up big move to England

Gill could have come back but the offers won’t good enough for him, plus he was battling Poey and Hooper.
Hockings would come back if the offers were there as well.
Mac Hansen I feel is down to our coaches/coaching. He is one of those who has thrived, he is not the norm. Very happy for the lad, he is in probably the best rugby environment in the world at the moment. If he is fit and maintains the form of last year, he has a great chance of a Lions jersey.
There are many names that you can add I know, but there needs to be context.
Look at Jack Dempsey, he was unwanted in Oz and was given a shot with Glasgow, similar to Hansen, he has really grabbed it. Again am very happy for him. I am sure if you ask both of them, they will say that they are enjoying themselves and appreciate what rugby is giving them.

Spot on Ankle-tap.
I appreciate that going and trying to make a fist of it overseas isn’t for everybody, but for those that give it a real go, usually love it.
What you put in, is what you get back.
If you go over there and assume the red carpet then there will be a wake-up call.
Europe is a wonderful experience.

Exclusive: Wallabies star weighing up big move to England

Peter there is not an endless pot of cash in Europe.

Personally prefer we ditch the Giteau Law and let the players choose.

The majority of the wallabies will stay in oz, this mass exodus won’t materialise, in my opinion.

Whitaker will go to Castre at the end of the season, as I have said before, that will be good for Whitaker and good for the tahs.

Tahs' season hanging by a thread after Chiefs go whack to post bonus point win

Cheers GusTee, understand that. I should have expressed my comment better.
I am just a bit perplexed as to why there are no comments re the CEO and GM, they were the ones responsible for the business, dealing with the organisation on a daily basis.
Obviously both groups equally bad in this case, but no comments.
The CEO is gone from what I understand, but the GM is still there. Happy to be corrected.
Just some shocking management all round.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

jeznez, ‘playing population’ is registered adults I assume?

Out of curiosity I would be interested in knowing what those % were back in 2004.

And again, I would prefer to not lose any team, and am assuming/hoping that twiggy keeps reaching into his pocket.

Private backers who are in for the long haul and not expecting ROI would be lovely!

Saracens came from nowhere on the back of Nigel Wray and then later some S.African backers. France has plenty of private backers as does Japan.

Ideally I would love some of our very, very rich people, which we have many of, to spend some of their money on our rugby, but sadly it has proven and continues that they have no interest.

Excellent comment Piccolino!

I can see your side and understand your rationale, just as I do with jeznez and many, many others on here.

I just don’t agree with the concept of going nationalistic.

To comment on a couple of your points.

Why would it be lower audiences? We had higher audiences 20 years ago with 3.

We would lose 20% of our national selection pool, if twiggy stays in, which I am sure the RA wants to happen. They would love to have more twiggys I reckon!

If we scrap the Giteau Law then that 20% number becomes less.

I believe our standard would increase with one less team. Our quality player pool is spread too thin at the moment. Not just on players, coaching, admin/mgmt etc, the whole business.

We will always lose players to League, always have.

But if we have winning teams, in an international competition, then we will become more attractive to those undecided about going to League or staying in Union and even those in League who see want Union can offer, as the likes of Sailor, Lote, Rogers, Walker etc did previously.

The Super AU final was an outlier, in my opinion, knock-on effects of COVID, it can’t be used as a reliable justification for the nationalistic approach. Our average attendance numbers in our derbies over the past 10 years is a more relative comparison.

One thing I would like for smarter people than me, like yourself, to give pros and cons on is a centrally contracted player base, such as Ireland do.

Thanks again for your great comment Piccolino, appreciated it and enjoyed it.

Why just the directors?

What about the CEO and GM?

They don’t seem to be getting too much attention.

Wallabies in danger of losing Hanigan to ambitious French club just as forward enters his prime

Good call on James Ryan.

Wallabies in danger of losing Hanigan to ambitious French club just as forward enters his prime

Never had an issue, unlike many on here, with Hannigan, he didn’t select himself in the oz team.

If I was him, I would go to France.

If it is Provence, then it is a lovely part of the world and they are investing heavy to get into the Top 14.

Play for 2 years, if it works out, either oz will want him back or Provence will keep him on, and he has a choice.

If it doesn’t work out, playing and living in Europe for a couple of years, on more money, is not a loss.

But on the oz side, as an old piggie, prefer the extra money, if there is any, goes into the 8!

Basic as I am, it still is, forwards decided who win and backs by how much.

And if we lost, it was because of the backs!

Wallabies in danger of losing Hanigan to ambitious French club just as forward enters his prime

Joe, controversial I know, but don’t we live within our means with 3 teams and twiggy, hoping he wants to keep putting his cash in?

People on here keep saying going back to 3/4 teams is backwards but I just can’t see how going nationalistic will grow the game, for me that is backwards.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

Cheers jez. Appreciate your reply.

Thanks for the info on contracts, I have no clue on that stuff.

My issue is that Super was better 20 years ago, even 30 years ago, as 10 teams.

Despite what people on here think, NZ need us.
What will they do if we go all nationalistic?
NPC?
Organise with Japan?
South Africa has put all its eggs into making Europe work, even though it is a bit ugly.

I just think it is a lose and lose situation if we go internal.

Just my feelings, but just want us to start winning and then have kids playing the game.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

Yes agreed Paul.

There are a number of hypotheticals.

But we can at least try and make educated decisions going forward.

100% guarantees, obviously don’t exist.

But what is certain, sadly, is that Australian Rugby is in a worse position than 20 years ago, as is Super Rugby.

Hopefully there are/will be some intelligent, forward thinking people involved in guiding Australian rugby and not just thinking of personal gains.

We have the 2 pinnacles of world rugby in a 2 year span, with the next being in 2037 (assuming the Lions want to), we really need to get some quality in place, soon as that 12 year gap is a long time between income.

Sadly I just see too many big fishes in small ponds.

Maybe, like an addict, we need to hit rock bottom and then try and rebuild.

Hoping not though, really am hoping not.

Rugby is such a quality game.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

jeznez understand your logic, I think Sheek has been on that card for a long time.

Not sure though what is the deal with the signed contracts for TV and Super Pacific.

Going forward, on a oz team only comp, the TV payments will be significantly less, I assume, therefore creating less money for players, coaches etc.

More players, especially the good ones, will go overseas and therefore reduce the quality of the national competition.

Or am I being too simplistic?

Am very happy to be educated on the matter as I am just an outsider looking in.

Not sure if mentioned here previously.

Whitaker is going to Castres next season.

For me, that is good for both the Tahs and Whitaker.

Rugby News: SRP poach first CEO from A-Leagues, Reds rookie reveals cruel prank ahead of debut, Hewat answers Dan call

Very happy for Hewat, was a very underrated player.

McKellar has at least confronted an issue, so here is hoping that next season Leicester will see some positive returns.

Listening to a northern pod, one of the hosts was talking about how Leicester were scoring less tries than in Borthwick/Wigglesworths and how not overtly impressed with McKellar.

He has had some injury issues in the squad to be fair but that is all part of rugby.

It is a great learning place the English league if the ability is there to learn,

Leicester was the end of Matt O’Connor and a few others.

One who did exceptionally well at Leicester, not to mention the fact of coming straight out of playing, was Patty Howard.

Very sad and a big loss, in my opinion, that he didn’t come back into rugby after cricket.

Well said Hoy.

A life well-lived, condolences to his family and friends.

RIP, David Lord: Australian sports journalism icon was 'always thoughtful and thought-provoking'

Fair signing by the Force. Good for oz rugby depth.

He played with, in my opinion, one of the top 3 hookers in the world for the last year and a half, so hopefully has picked up some skills.

This season hasn’t featured much and nothing since new year I think.

Maybe he was homesick or maybe no other offers around, who knows.

Wish him all the best, fair dues and respect, an international cap is an international cap.
