A mediocre player in his time, long past his mediocrity.

Well observed PC. I also remember Dick Marks’ tenure and that of colleagues of his like Rob Bradley who was the National Junior Development Officer. It was deemed that these roles were no longer needed after the WC win in 99, as the sheer populism of the game would encourage recruitment and development. The management at the time thought they could save some money, presumably to bolster their own remuneration. Anyway we lost the coaching, refereeing and junior development roles and for the past two decades we have suffered as a result of the short term stupidity.

COMMENT: Eddie must be axed if he can't beat Wales - or the game will be in deep trouble in Australia

Harry,
In another post I made exactly the same observations, but perhaps not as elequantly!
I once stated in a presentation to a team building exercise that “Leadership is the greatest form of servitude that one can aspire to” Eddie has forgotten this fundamental requirement, if indeed he ever appreciated it. He is now caught in a trap of either defending his own decisions or blaming others for their lack of support. It smacks of pathalogical delusion and narcasistic personality disorder.
Your point about digging a hole is the perfect analogy. If he could demonstrate some genuine acknowledgement of his errors of judgement, rather than resorting to his hubris he might stand a chance. Simply admit his errors and rectify them now. If possible reach out to Cooper and Lolesio who are both in France. Send out the SOS to Pete Samu and Len Ikitau. If not use what you have. Donaldson to number ten, Kellaway to fifteen Foketi to 13. If you persist with Carter Gordon and Jordan Petaia you will not only lose the match against Wales but you will do irreparable damage to Gordan and Petaia’s confidence.

COMMENT: Eddie must be axed if he can't beat Wales - or the game will be in deep trouble in Australia

Well actually Bluff boy some of them are in France. They’re just not in the squad because Eddie is an incompetent selector.

Good, the bad, the Eddie: 'Always good to kick a dead body, mate' - Jones' wry reality as Fiji rise from sleeping on floor to rugby heaven

Gee thanks WB!
Not sure what you mean by obsequious as I’m not at all trying to gain your favour. Further i make my argument based not soley on my opinion but also on that expressed by others with more credentials than I can lay claim to, like Sonny Bill. I also would challenge your use of wunderkind in reference to Quade Cooper. He was never that. That term might better reserved for Jorgenson? He should be in the team because he is the best five eight we have despite not being the youngest. The reason he has not been selected might be found here in this article from ten years ago:
https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/no-room-for-all-three-amigos-in-wallabies-says-eddie-jones-20130327-2gt0m.html
More importantly, however, I feel Quades inclusion in the SQUAD would have been invaluable to two young developing five eight’s being Noah Lolesio and Carter Gordon.

'We're going to go through some pain': Eddie bristles at SBW criticism but takes 'full responsibility' after historic loss

True Rohan and while we’re at it why don’t we grab Irae Simone from Clermont as well. Saves on airfares and they would be warmed up and ready to go!

'We're going to go through some pain': Eddie bristles at SBW criticism but takes 'full responsibility' after historic loss

Ken,
As ever elequently stated and spot on the money! I might add that there seems to be very little logic applied in the squad selection or indeed common sense. Quade was going to France. Ikitau was clearly well into his rehab. A terrific experienced inside centre backup is currently playing in France – Irae Simone. What logic is there in including Kemeny when you had Michael Hooper and/or Pete Samu available? I simply can’t find an explaination for this other than some personal preference as opposed to evidence based decision making.
If anything what this continued folly suggests is we need to insist on some transparency and quantifiable and measured performance against criteria contributing to selections. If there was ever a team that needed the “moneyball” approach its the wallabies!

'We're going to go through some pain': Eddie bristles at SBW criticism but takes 'full responsibility' after historic loss

You really don’t have a clue do you WB. And not sure what coverage you watch but there are countless former wallabies that get to comment on NZ perdormances. You are also demonstrating your complete ignorance to suggest Cooper wouldn’t have made a difference but suggesting Gordon might become one ? Guess what perhaps of Cooper was in the Squad mentoring Gordon that might have a chance of blossoming! Thats exactly what Sonny Bill suggested – You know the guy you profess has no ground to stand on in commentary.

Ok I’ll bite! Tell me the deadwood he has cleaned out?

Me neither!

'We're going to go through some pain': Eddie bristles at SBW criticism but takes 'full responsibility' after historic loss

What are you talking about whistleblower, better served by blowharder! These guys have played tests and/or been in selection squads. If they don’t or didn’t warrant “serious” consideration what can you say about those that were selected on a whim like Jorgensen and Kemeny?

'We're going to go through some pain': Eddie bristles at SBW criticism but takes 'full responsibility' after historic loss

Eddie’s argument about selecting youth in an effort to re-build the Wallabies is utter BS. Firstly he’s overlooked the selection of youthful players including Noah Lolesio, Corey Tool, Tom Wright, Harry Wilson to name but a few. Secondly he’s appears more than prepared to include older more experienced players such as Will Skelton.
Also an examination of other sides such as Ireland who have a 38 year old fly half seem to be doing OK? It also astounds me that Eddie can come out and talk about the performance of our Maul being a major factor in our underachievement when he was responsible for the alienation of our key coaches in that are being Dan McKellor and Laurie Fisher ! – Not to mention excluding our best maul tactition hooker in Folau Fainga.
look at Eddies coaching staff – Ex Rugby League players and/or coaches. They might know something about defence but try and tell me they know anything about rucking. mauling, scrummaging or lineouts!
To put it simply Eddie has assembled a group of players and support coaches that are totally ill-equipped to perform in a World Cup. And his defence is that he is treating this exercise as development tour!
Well I for one, and when I see the faces of the Australian Supporters in the stands I know I’m not alone, can’t buy into this expensive self indulgence.
The punters who bought into the tours and those of us paying subscriptions to Stan to watch this clusterf–k deserve better and telling us the bleeding obvious that you accept 100 pc responsibilty means f All. We don’t want your disingenuous apology we want a response. We want a change. We want you to listen to the critics – some who are highly qualified and swallow your ffing pride and change what you can. If its too late to call in players that should have been there fro the start like Ikitau, Quade Cooper, Noah Lolesio, Pete Samu and Irae Simone who is in Europe Then Donaldson to five eight. Fines to Half back. Kellaway to Full Back. Foketi or Perese to outside centre. Petaia and Carter Gordon to the bench. Then tell them to go out their and play Rugby.

'We're going to go through some pain': Eddie bristles at SBW criticism but takes 'full responsibility' after historic loss

Yep,

He wanted more money than they were prepared to pay. I think\ its a great result for the Brumbies. Whats ironic is that he’s going to the Force where he’ll be competing with Fines!

Wallabies bolter has played just one Test - but picking him over veteran would stick to Eddie's new 'mantra'

In violent agreement jimbo! What makes it even worse is that he has Carter Gordon outside him who is too inexperienced to take charge of playmaking. Its funny in his own words he says that Eddie wants him to get his hands on the ball more, whilst Eddie selects a one-trick pony in Nic White who’s preference ist to kick and has a poor pass?

Wallabies set to back veteran halfback for crunch Fiji World Cup clash, gun fullback misses selection again

Great article Spiro and great to have you back. I was particularly interested in your assesment of the ABs back row and accommodations made to include particular players even if it meant moving players from their natural position or selecting sub-optimal players to “compensate”. I would contest the Australian selectors have committed the same felony. As an example the experiment of playing both George Smith and Phil Waugh, with smith moving to number eight penalsied us by not having an additional tall number eight at lineout time. The same crime was committed when Pocock was moved to eight to accommodate a lesser seven in Hooper. I fear comments from Eddie suggest the same stupidity prevails when he talks of developing a game around the personell he has selected? He dosen’y understand its horses for courses not courses for horses!

SPIRO ZAVOS: Skelton a force of nature, All Blacks' strategic error that has put their World Cup in peril

Wow,
I wish this sort of defence for Faessler was around for Folau Fainga’a when all the detractors came out! I seem to recall it was all his fault! And as a net result our best round the field hooker and great scavenger an maul exponent couldn’t even make the squad!
History will recall the same hypocrisy was used to preclude Jeremy Paul from consideration and premature exit from playing.

Revealed: The bloody ear that has proved a Rugby World Cup headache as Wallabies seek lineout fix

Nope, you need to go back a bit further. there was a Queenslander by the name of Mark McBain. he was the toughest Wallaby hooker I ever sore. If you ask Simon Poidervan I bet he will say the same thing.

Greatest XV: 'Most competitive person I ever met' - his mates loved winding up Phil Kearns, but knew he was force of nature

Cannon’s selection over Paul in 2003 was the greatest travesty ever in Australia’s WC history in my opinion. It still burns me to this day and we lost Paul way to early because of it. At the time JP wasn’t ranked in the top 5 hookers! Absolute BS and clearly there was something else going on. i would say the same for a hooker by the name of Marco Caputo who also deserved many more starts in the Wallabies jersey.

Greatest XV: 'Most competitive person I ever met' - his mates loved winding up Phil Kearns, but knew he was force of nature

David Campese

Should we change the name of the Webb Ellis Cup to recognise the competition's most iconic player?

And that person should be Ryan Lonnergan. He can kick goals, has a very good pass both sides and defends well above his weight. Its been my contention that Nic White has been a hinderance to the sides he has played in for the last two years. I am glad that the Brumbies couldn’t afford his requested pay rise and that hes off to the Force. Not sure where that leaves Isacc Fines but I’d have him over White as well!

Player ratings: Skelton, Tupou Wallabies' best despite Donno's day out in World Cup opener

Again Christie you are overlhyping it!
You suggest we might have scored two more tries but fail to mention that Georgia bombed at least three!
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We were OK. Donaldson was very good as were Kerevi and Koribete. The forwards were OK with Valetini and Skelton excelling. Nothing more.

Remember us? The soft reminder the Wallabies remain a RWC threat - and the one selection headache for Fiji

And was Donaldson or Gordon really that much better than Lolesio? Was Quade Cooper a poor kicker? What we have here is an Eddie manufactured ClusterF*&^^. All I can say is I hope there are no more injuries or we can expect 8 weeks of Eddie moving deck chairs! For my sanity I have picked a backup team to follow in the case of an early Wallaby exit. I’m on the Fiji bandwagon!

CONFIRMED: Wallabies' two-decade first for RWC opener as Eddie explains Donaldson's selection

I agree. Without starting a conspiracy this is how it appears to me. We have increased the OS based contingent and removed as many Brumbies from consideration so we can open up the opportunities for Warratahs. Not only that but if Eddie felt there was any likely dissent from OS players mmmm say like Cooper – lets drop them after encouraging them to take leadership and mentoring roles. As far as I am concerned Eddie is just Cheika V2.

CONFIRMED: Wallabies' two-decade first for RWC opener as Eddie explains Donaldson's selection

Yep Val,
At the risk of labouring the point, we would have been far better served by having Quade Cooper and Tom Wright in the squad.

CONFIRMED: Wallabies' two-decade first for RWC opener as Eddie explains Donaldson's selection

Oh if only we had backup 10’s in the squad? You know like Noah Lolesio or Quade Cooper!

CONFIRMED: Wallabies' two-decade first for RWC opener as Eddie explains Donaldson's selection

Yep very Cheika like! Remember all the shuffling and players out of position to compensate for the defficiencies of Foley and Beale.
