I’d agree with that post 1995 and add that pre-professionalism you’d have to add SA in there as well as they did have a winning margin against all teams incl NZ.

Why is the south so much better than the north?

Why is the south so much better than the north?

Haha, you’re having a laugh there I reckon – as you put the end of the year results down to easy-to-beat on the road I’ve pulled the last 10 EOYT results: Boks played 31, won 23 (74% win ratio) and lost 8 (25.8% loss ratio) with 5 of those tours being unbeaten, two tours with 1 loss and three tours with 2 losses. They certainly haven’t performed like the ABs but I wouldn’t confidently say that they’re easy to beat.

2015 Rugby World Cup preview - South Africa

It is obviously not a blanket emotion held by all but generally everyone I know in Saffa land supports the southern hemisphere sides against their northern counterparts. It actually reminds me alot of when I was growing up and of our school rivalry in the Border region between 3 old schools that have held onto the typical English education system’s traditions.

There was a fierce rivalry between us and we played each other twice a year but we had a festival every couple of years that saw us play against the best that the Western Cape had to offer. In each game one or both of our long time rivals would form a tunnel for us leading onto the pitch and clap us on with encouragement against the foe from the other side of the country. We would do likewise and we felt we had a bond. Because we came from the same area and played each other so often we developed a deeper respect for each other.

I feel the same way as a Bok supporter wishing the Abs and Wallabies well. Should one of us lose, it reflects badly on all of us. It dislodges the cloak of invincibility and blemishes our mystical aura as the menacing hordes of the South.

Time to bury the hatchet: It's time for SANZAR vs The World

“I mean, who goes to nz for a better life?” Saffers like it there, as well as Oz, US and UK…

International eligibility rules: Who should play for your country?

hi there sheek, I know you’re getting alot of stick for your comment but I have to put my 2 cents in there and would say that based on the toughest 100 springbok forwards of all time could be argued to be as tough as the 100 toughest league boys. It’s a moot point but the majority of the bok pack are hardened farm boys with heavy-handed fathers and often lack the sensibility to know when to stop. Prime example would be Schalk Burger playing with a broken neck against Scotland in 2007 and there are many more war stories along those line. But in any case it would be an interesting scrap to watch.

History suggests Sam Burgess won't make it in rugby

I tried to slow the footage down to have a good look but the camera angle was bad so I couldn’t make out what actually happened but from the initial hit I thought that it was a shoulder in the face. I didn’t actually see Louw holding his face but he was in pain but I appreciate the clarification. Cheers.

Close scoreline or no, the Boks can't match the All Blacks

not at all Harry, I thought that there was a shoulder charge and was querying why it wasn’t looked at but now I know.

I think the AB forwards had a mandate before the game to get under Etzebeth’s skin for a retaliatory card, it’s difficult as they found out. He’s very much like Bakkies, always hard encounters and pushing and shoving but you’ll very rarely find him swinging.

I think these off the ball niggles and chance taking by the ABs is actually a positive for the SBs, it shows that they felt that they needed something a bit extra on top of what they had to get an edge over the SBs.

Close scoreline or no, the Boks can't match the All Blacks

The ABs got away with quite a few offences and not just niggles, Richie went shoulder first into Louw’s face in trying to clear him off the ball and basically took him out of the move which resulted in the try – I’ve ust watched the highlights and it’s clear that he used his shoulder with purpose and that was the end of the game for Francois. Read holding back Habana after he offloaded to Aaron Smith was quite obvious but not spotted either for some reason.

Close scoreline or no, the Boks can't match the All Blacks

Hi zhenry. I’m sure both sides were slowing the ball down on defence as both teams do many things off the ball to gain an advantage and the SBs are normally worse at this than the ABs and the ones that get penalised as a result. I think that the ref had a decent night and he can’t be blamed for holding sway over the result. The SBs loosies could maybe have been warned but then again A.Smith was way offside in a charge down attempt on Pollard deep behind his try-line, Read held Habana back off the ball after offloading to prevent him chasing and they didn’t go back to Louw’s incident to have a look at what happened as it looked like a shoulder straight into his face but can’t be sure. Anyway, the ref called it ok I thought.

The Boks don't deserve our sympathy

yes, though as a percentage as isolation would have limited the number of games for the SBs.

Should the Boks spring even higher Heyneke?

Yes true, those stats don’t lie. All I’m suggesting is that I think it is a bit pointless saying that one team is no.1 when they’re certainly no.2 head to head with another team.

Should the Boks spring even higher Heyneke?

percentages don’t mean much when you a) don’t have a better win loss record against the team and b) never won a tour on their soil. Considering this is a period built on tours and that SA won in NZ and NZ couldn’t do the same I’d say percentages don’t really hold up.

Should the Boks spring even higher Heyneke?

very informative, cheers mate. By your astute powers of deduction, that would be no-one ;D

Should the Boks spring even higher Heyneke?

2nd behind who?

Should the Boks spring even higher Heyneke?

Hi Biltong.

I was at a Petro Jackson fundraiser recently where Nick Mallett was supposed to be the guest speaker the night before our opening match of the Tri Nations against the Pumas. It was on Schalk senior’s farm nestled between Wellington and the mountains and I was definitely one of less than a handful of English speakers attending the event.

The men were large and very friendly. Nick Mallett couldn’t make it that night but in his place was Morne du Plessis and an old team mate of his who is now a technical analyst (who’s name I cannot remember) as well as Marius Joubert who started his club rugby career at Wellington Rugby Club.

It was an informative evening of rugby talk from WP moving to Greenpoint and the Springbok’s predictable style of play. There was one attendee who asked Morne if he thinks the penalty to the 5m line and drive is all we have. The man asking was frustrating with the repeat of the same moves as was the rest of the room who murmured in disapproval. Morne elaborated that we needed to be smarter and this was a sentiment shared by the majority of the room whom are hard Afrikaans rugby men of old.

The reason that I bring this up is that although there may be an inclination for certain coaches to prefer the modern Springbok blueprint, there are many men cut from the same cloth as Meyer who wholeheartedly disagree with him. These men want to see the physicality mixed with the element of surprise.

Jean's words a delusion, Hooper's smile an illusion

well that’s good news then, let the rugby gods smile upon us 😀

Meyer: Don't kick it to Izzy

Hi Harry, is that an actual fact or are you hoping so?

Meyer: Don't kick it to Izzy

“t’ll feel exactly like the weather on the du Plessis farm.”
I laughed out loud to that one 😀

Underboks: Projected to lose in Salta, South Africa to win at a canter

Hi Fredstone, actaully replying to your other comment about the SBs not adapting to refs interpretation last world cup which I disagree with – Walsh admitted to wrongfully giving that penalty to Oz and has since apologized about it. It was a tight game that could have gone either way.
