I don’t get the problem with blood. If it’s to do with bodily fluids and communicable diseases, then why are the players allowed to expectorate all over the ground? Horrible habit, dreadful role model and surely just as dangerous as getting a little of someone’s blood on you.

"It is an absolute disgrace": Carey blasts MRP over Harvey ban

Glad to see you include Hawkins. He’s turning into a proper thug. Must’ve been watching Carey at his “best”.

“… all but labelling chucking as a plight on the game”. Do you happen to mean ‘blight’? A chucker may find himself in a plight (a state of distress or predicament), but that is not relevant to the conduct of the game and the implementation of the rules.

Allow chucking and tampering in limited overs cricket

Hear, hear. I was blown away by the force that Hawkins managed to inject into that “jumper punch”. A punch is a punch is a punch, especially if it’s to the head.

That's not a punch. That's a (jumper) punch

In the good ol’ days of black and white fuzzy telecasts, it was always possible to tell the home team from the away team because the away team wore white shorts while the home team wore black. Easy. If you reverted to that and coupled it with white socks to go with the white shorts, then the guernsey problem would become redundant. Problem solved.

A home jumper for a home final - Port Adelaide denied their right

I think there must be a real difference between the way WADA/ASADA can deal with individual athletes (e.g. Olympics) and the way they deal with teams. Even cycling doping is individual rather than team, although teams have been penalised for allowing it. But club doping (aka peptides) is another matter altogether. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to Essendon.

Has Paul Gallen been punished enough?

P.S. Mum’s favourite memory was being at the MCG with her sister the day Bradman went for a duck in his last test there. Both Mum and my aunt counted that among their most treasured memories. Contrary to national feelings, my family were not Bradman fans.

What iconic sporting event were you lucky enough to be at?

My mother and I were at the MCG for the Centenary Test in 1977. It was the day when David Hookes whacked that series of fours and to see Tony Greig trying in vain to plug the holes in the field was hilarious, Moved Tuffnell and the ball went straight through where he’d come from.

But the memorable bit was the total silence that descended on the MCG when we realised that the batsman who had just come in wasn’t Max Walker, but rather Rick McCosker, with both jaws wired. Then the MCG erupted. One of those moments that only happens once. We were so glad we were there.

You mention Hird’s “lessons hard learnt”. Ah, but has he learned any lessons from this debacle? He now knows how to get a gap year on full pay, upgraded qualifications from a prestigious establishment in Paris, how to stoke his ego and a two-year extension on his contract. What “hard lessons” has he learned? I’d suggest none. And he never will. He’s too busy being J.Hird Inc.

Two broken down coaches: Time to take Stuart and Hird off the road

Boom, Boom.

Bombers make the right decision on Hird

Granted that Nibali is a stand-out in this year’s TdF, but due respect must be given to the Astana team which is working faultlessly to enable Nibali to do his thing. Team riding at its best. Maybe we’ll see OGE at this level one day soon…

Don't be a dope - Nibali's dominance down to a lack of competition

Gee, I enjoyed watching that. Loved the fact that the ref wasn’t having any of the attempted diving. I noticed that the Brazilians soon gave up trying to dive. I agree with the MIdfielder: some of the worst defending I’ve ever seen, too.

World Cup 2014 Brazil vs Germany: Brazil lose after first half self-destruct

+1. Definitely preferential treatment. Gerrans was in a good position for a sprint and that ijit, with “home town glory” writ large in front of his eyes(yes, I know he’s a Manxman, but his mother is from Harrogate) takes him out with a very dubious move. Sigh. The referees’ decision is final, but not necessarily the right one.

Germans defeat England again as Cav crashes out

I only hope he cleaned up his own mess rather than leaving the evidence for some poor unfortunate cleaner.

Grow up, Carney.

TURNER: There's more to football than just playing

The boy??? He’s 28, for heaven’s sake. Most of us were earning a living and providing for a family well before then. He’s had the vote for 10 years, ergo he’s an adult. Well, sort of.

Carney sacked by Cronulla: Was it the right call?

I’ll admit to being a Liverpool fan. My response: bugger off, Suarez. You sully our reputation and the game itself.

What gives with Luis Suarez?

I love the fact that the Uruguay FA is alleging that Chielini’s bite marks are photoshopped. Anything that is dished out to this serial biter will be nullified by adulation at home. As Thompson said in his ESPN article, the man is “batshit crazy”. I only hope that Liverpool gets rid of him. No club of any standing would want to risk the bad press that comes with Suarez. Yes, he’s a superb footballer, but… One journalist said that above the boots, he’s bonkers. (Sorry, can’t find the citation for the Thompson article. I found it on a link in The Guardian Australia.)

Thrice bitten: Luis Suarez does it again

Gold.

Australia's heroics bode well for the Asian Cup

Not surprised at Culina. Always thought he was over-estimated as a player, and suspect he believed his own hype. It’s a tad curmudgeonly to denigrate a team that has just played its socks off against a team that beat Spain 5-1. The Socceroos made me proud, and Culina should have been proud too.

Australia's heroics bode well for the Asian Cup

Hear, hear. Spot on.

Investigations take time so let's cut ASADA some slack

I’m a convert from AFL, but isn’t a strip in a to-man tackle a no-no? Maybe I imagined the second blue jersey…

Hayne creates his own legend with single act

Maybe the peptides have worn off? 🙂
