Reading your excellent article made me think that Ricky Stuart was advising Freddy as Ricky picks the wrong team, isn’t the least bit innovative in attack and uses the bench as an afterthought.

Ricky is very useful when the chips are down; he loves an ambush but the emotional reaction isn’t sustainable. He was happy to lose the game a fortnight ago as long as Jarod Croker enjoyed the week. He is the most stubborn person in the world which is fine if you’re as successful (ie accumulated a number of Premierships) as you are stubborn.
He is a magnificent human being. No doubt about that, but as a coach…..

Few coaches have the emotional link to the Raiders “powers that be” like Ricky does. They won’t sack him as they would someone else. He’s a great man, who is so stubborn that trying to prove people wrong is more important than anything else.

The people around Sticky can’t stop him being absolutely pig headed. They get replaced instead of the real problem, Ricky, moving on. Ricky is brilliant for the club irt making money but he’s loyal to players for way too long and his strategies are prehistoric. Crash ball for 5 play’s then pass it to some of the least imaginative halves in the NRL. Need some of the 6 foot 3 inch 100 kg guys on the wings that most good teams have. Cotric is super slow, Rapa is crazy, HSS needs a long rest etc etc.

Ben Hunt has tried his guts out in a team that is quite poor. I can think of plenty of overpaid players and he isn’t one of them. I’m a Raiders and NSW Blues supporter too. He would make a humongous difference to the Raiders, that’s for sure.

There won’t be a better game for years. I had that thought before the final few minutes when miraculous things happened. Penrith could hardly have played better and some of their players are hardly household names.
