The one thing that annoys me about all these Bennett discussions. It is like the Dolphins don’t exist as an option. I think it shows just how Sydney-centric lots of thinking is.
It is all about Rabbitohs or Eels. Personally, I’d like him to stay at the Dolphins (and I say that as an Eels fan). Better for the game ultimately than just another Sydney team.
Edit – well after a modicum of research I can see some articles refer to Kristian Woolf taking over the Dolphins next year. But other articles say Bennett has an option for 2025. Which is true?

The question Bennett needs to address before deciding if he wants to return to Rabbitohs

Michael Bevan!! Reckon he could keep also and from memory did on the odd occasion.

Couldn’t the same be said about Rugby Union in general in Australia? Good luck to the Rebels – hope they bring down everything with them.

But i think what is missing is that it is not about the perspective of Bears fans. Or people from North Sydney.

It should be about what is best for the new location- whether that is Perth, NZ2 or elsewhere. The views of some Bears fans in another city or even country should be irrelevant.

If anything, tieing a new club to the Bears would be a huge detriment. It would make it much harder to engage locals. And the RL media cannot be trusted to be responsible. Every time the team has a rough patch – on the field or financially – they will start wheeling out reasons why they should be shifted back to Sydney. Completely undermining the expansion location and reminding everyone it is not really their team.

Interesting that we have two scenarios playing out at the same time with Spencer Leniu and Sam Kerr.

Racism from one black person to another and racism from one white person to another. Racism is obviously unacceptable in any form – and i hope both learn from this experience. But there may be some conflicted commentary given the confusing situation.

You make a point about the NRL Nines failing in Auckland due to it not being a RL city. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom.

The first tournament got an attendance of around 90,000 across two days which Super Rugby would love to get close to in Melbourne.

It diminished year on year and eventually the event was held in Perth before the COVID related disruption.

It’s demise is less down to Auckland itself, but more down to the NRL’s short attention span when it comes to anything pre-season related. Between the Sevens (olden days), Nines, All Stars match, pre season challenge, world club challenge and regular contests like the Charity Shield – it has chopped and changed priorities over the years without really landing on the right routine.

Super Round is a celebration of rugby - that's why it should have never been held in Melbourne

Sydney is the only real option here by a process of elimination.

Brisbane is the only other city with a decent rectangular stadium but it’s too small.

Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide only have ovals which shouldn’t even come into the equation.

The battle of the rugby World Cup 2027 Final: Sydney or Melbourne?

Yep that’s what I meant.

Just meant that no top tier team is based there.

'Nothing short of a disgrace': Lack of football-specific venues is holding the A-Leagues back

Interesting analysis. But the NRL data is a few years old and this year there was a pretty decent crowd surge.

The NRL regular season average was 19,633. This was fueled by the introduction of the new team (Dolphins) and some good growth by teams like the Warriors.

It’s worth remembering that the average was hampered this year by some other factors – eg. The Women’s world cup meant some matches were shifted from places like Suncorp and Allianz to Gabba and SCG – Broncos and Roosters crowds wouls have been higher otherwise. Plus Sharks home ground had an artificial limit of 11-12000 due to construction works – it was sold out many times.

For regular season fixtures at regular home grounds the average was 19,633. A-League has a long way to go to reach that.

Team by team (at regular home ground is below). This excludes this things like Magic round and random matches at places like Perth, Mudgee and Darwin.

1. Broncos
Total Average: 33,793 (Suncorp and Gabba)

2. Dolphins:
Total Average: 24,064 (Suncorp, Redcliffe and Sunshine Coast)

3. Warriors:
Total Average: 22,368 (Mt Smart)

4. Knights:
Total Average: 21,312 (McDonald Jones)

5. Roosters:
Total Average: 21,135 (Allianz & SCG)

6. Rabbitohs:
Total Average: 19,651 (Accor & Allianz)

7. Panthers:
Total Average: 19,575 (Bluebet stadium)

8. Cowboys
Total Average: 19,175 (Qlnd country stadium)

9. Eels:
Total Average: 18,901 (WSS)

10. Storm:

11. Bulldogs:

12. Titans:

13. Raiders:

14. Sea Eagles:

15. Tigers:

It happened before... Can an improved A-League grow and match the NRL's crowd numbers?

Any solution that involves a focus on private schools is laughable.

I agree that Brisbane needs a smaller rectangular venue of quality. Something like a Commbank or Robina size. It does seem like a missed opportunity to not get a decent stadium out of the Olympics.

But a firm no from me for anything dedicated to a single code. All stadiums funded by taxpayer should be available for any code.

Brisbane does have a decent foundation of stadiums with a former glory- Ballymore, QSAC, Perry Park. Pity they were all allowed to become dilapidated. Only Redcliffe has really had some love but its so out of the way.

Strangely enough the best redevelopment is going to Sunshine Coast – a place where neither of the 3 rectangular codes have a presence. Odd from a legacy perspective.

'Nothing short of a disgrace': Lack of football-specific venues is holding the A-Leagues back

I appreciate the sentiment and i would to see the Jets and Bears back in some capacity.

But I believe we are best placed for Perth to be as local as it can be. We should be looking at expansion from the perspective of what is in the interest of the expansion location, not what is in the interest of an already overserviced Sydney.

Any new Perth side has a better chance of success if it goes alone without being hamstrung by a Sydney based footprint.

– Many people in WA don’t like NSW. It will be harder to attract fans in Perth.
– Henson Park – even with some upgrades would be a very poor NRL venue. Sydney people do not need more matches. Same goes for North Sydney Oval.
– I am from Sydney and in my early 40s and I can’t remember the Jets ever playing – I was sinply too young. I only know them because I love RL history. If they aren’t relevant to me, then they won’t be to stacks of people younger than me.
– The media in Australia is untrustworthy. They will sensationalise the Newtown connection- undermining the fact that the team is from Perth. Everytime Perth have a hard time, they will be foreshadowing more matches in Sydney / relocation etc, putting a cloud over the whole thing (ie deathriding the club for clicks). This will make it harder to attract fans in Perth.
– Nostalgia is nice for a small handful of people in Sydney but irrelevant for people from Perth – who are the most important stakeholders in this scenario.
– WA has already had some decent monikers in the past. If nostalgia is the name of the game – then revive the Reds. Otherwise, Pirates has the potential to be a very strong brand that appeals to kids.
– Creating the Perth Jets would deprive us of perhaps a better opportunity down the track. That is – some link between the Ipswich Jets (with desires for the NRL) and Newtown instead.

Yes please – may I suggest lots of ‘normal rounds’!!!!

Another highlight has been the Knights trotting out their bright orange ‘mining’ jersey every year against….. the Tigers.
