Are you saying there has been an $8.5M increase in operating costs for each team that wasn’t foreseen?

Of course there wasn’t. The ARU just don’t know what they’re doing.

‘But just because of the path chosen not working, doesn’t automatically mean any alternatives would have been successful’

Alternate realities aside just look at what actually transpired. They went from being well off enough to write off the Rebels debts and pay $6M for someone to take them off their hands in July 2015 before a record broadcast deal was even signed off in December 2015 to a review in August 2016 saying they are at risk of going broke if they didn’t get rid of a Super Rugby team. It seems the only thing to sav the ARU from going broke was the strike of luck that the Force went broke themselves and had been stupid enough to sign an unfavorable “alliance agreement”.

The rapid turn of fortunes and being saved only by a stroke of good luck (while landing yourself a Senate inquiry and 2 referrals to ASIC) suggests that whom ever is at the wheel does not know how to drive. I wouldn’t expect things to get better without change.

Are you suggesting this was all part of the ARU’s master plan? Keep the Rebels for a better broadcast deal knowing that the Force will sign over their license with no protections and that that SANZAR and the broadcasters would let them drop a team in two years time with out giving up any of the money? Meanwhile by their own account if this plan didn’t come off they would go broke.

Bravo to the ARU then.

no obligation to keep the Rebels after 2015 and they owned them in 2015
ARU need a new accountant and business analyst because the turn of fortunes happened way to quickly

I agree, I also can’t see why Rugby AU should bare the costs for the Rebels losing money year in year out.

Didn’t the ARU only have an obligation to field 5 teams until the end of the 2015 season which was nearly over at the time of the sale?

It would have been cheaper to go into the new broadcast deal with only 4 teams and cut the Rebels while they owned them. Future liabilities would have been offloaded for $6M less.
