It always seems easy from the outside. Thorn does look lost on ideas, but really i would look towards a loss of player quality.
Is that due to the player drain overseas or the Reds lack of retention due to culture? Only time will tell this with a new coach.
A better focus perhaps would be to ask the question: What makes a super rugby team competitive first, and a winner second. Is it a proper tight 5 or holding onto strike players such as wright, petaia & sualli?
No real excuse for tight 5 pathways, as rarely are they taken to league, but rather not given a pathway due to the physical nature of super rugby.
The biggest loss to competitiveness is in our tight 5 (nationally), and the only real solution to get bodies ready for super rugby is an NRC.

'Classic indicators of failed coaching': Thorn is finished, so here's what should happen next for the Reds

Yes correct – they still would have lost 12-20 point margin but nothing compared to the end performance they stumped up.

'Broken record': Ill-disciplined Reds given 'reality check' as Hurricanes make Lynagh's debut a tough one

Discipline, poor tackles, poor handling, fatigue are all a direct result of the yellow cards. Take away playing with 14 men for 20 minutes and you have a team that could have limited the hurricanes to under 30 points. This would have at least kept the team competitive

Sometimes it is better to let them score the try rather than double down and hurt your team further. 1 man on the field is worth more than 7 points in the super competition

'Broken record': Ill-disciplined Reds given 'reality check' as Hurricanes make Lynagh's debut a tough one

The biggest winner out of all of this is actually the younger players & super squads. Imagine all your top young players going on tour, not receiving much game time and blowing any chance of cohesion for the Super Rugby season. Whats going to benefit Aus rugby more in the next 2 years – a few more tackles with the national team in training or team cohesion from when the SR season commences with the improved chance of competing with NZ teams… Nothing will improve these youngsters more than being able to compete at Super level in a 15 game + season rather than a short time period of a month training with the national team

WALLABIES SQUAD: Skelton returns, Perese gets another shot, Noah left behind

Plan was to create a professional team in Western Sydney for the Asian comp at some point right?

It isnt his problem to solve but it presents an opportunity to him to secure raw talent in the medium to long term. Who knows

The Wrap: So where was TJ when the Hurricanes needed him?

Call me crazy, but my gut feeling is twiggy would be VERY happy to operate one of the western Sydney clubs as a feeder to the Force. If he did it, im sure he would rub it into the faces of the elitist clubs very well.

The Wrap: So where was TJ when the Hurricanes needed him?

Club > Team > Individual
Whilst I respect their decision to refuse the pay deal, club comes before individual so I totally support the reds actions.

Reds trio refuse to take pay cut, stood down by QRU

Yep absolutely, when i mean impact perhaps i mean the way that he is utilised rather, than only playing 15 minutes off the bench at the end of games. I can foresee him being the starting prop for the first 40 with AAA coming off the bench, increasing talk and communication when the other blokes tire

Is the Bell ringing for change in the Wallabies front row?

I think its a great thing that TT is learning to play an 80 minute game. What if an injury occurs in the 5th minute of a test match to the starting prop?

Whilst ideally TT is utilized in an shorter time period each game, playing 80 is a skill he can add to his repertoire. Yes, this is something you learn (you dont just ‘know’ how to as a front rower). Its not like his explosive game will go backwards will it 😉

Is the Bell ringing for change in the Wallabies front row?

Fair point. I only know the Brisbane scene… Id suggest the reason for ‘lack’ of support at UQ is the consistent success it achieves. Whilst you do want as many followers as possible, ultimately quality rugby games are what people do and will watch. Would you rather a game 22-20 or 45-20? The Brisbane teams will initially struggle against the NSW teams so anything that makes the competition closer would be favorable right?

The rugby calendar of the future

Long time reader, first time poster, so to speak. I agree with alot of your comments sheek, but just wondering how you came up with the Brisbane clubs? Surely you would take UQ as one of the clubs as they are affiliated with the university and all the colleges that come along with it?

The rugby calendar of the future

I guess it comes down to the ultimate question: Do people watch sport for both entertainment and sporting excellence or specifically the latter?

If its the latter then you are aren’t likely to enjoy Kyrgios, I certainly do though!

In defence of Nick Kyrgios

I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day. Go the reds!

It would be great if the Force played the Aussie Super Rugby teams more often in general. I don’t know when the Rapid Rugby season is planned to play in terms of months but have assumed it would be a similar calendar to super rugby.

Pending the above assumption, here are a couple of options off the top of my head:

Preseason clashes – probably in Perth or Regional Australia. All teams need 2 or 3 warmups. If QLD, NSW, ACT and MEL played the force every 2nd year, this could work. Perth would be the cheapest financially as there would only be 1 ‘away’ team. The viability of this would depend on the saturation the Perth Rugby market can take.

The Best Aussie Super team (furthest in super rugby finals or by points) vs winner of Rapid Rugby.
You could genuinely play this in the capital cities as it would attract members of the super team. Their season would have been a success so there would be supporters.

A financial agreement would have to be reached as it would likely be loss making.

As for the reds losing to the force, take out Samu Kerevi and I would agree with you. But that bloke is just an absolute handful to defend. He is the sole reason that the reds are able to score points. He pends and breaks the defensive line so often creating overlaps & mismatches in the phases thereafter. If Kerevi was rules out for the season, my bets would be the Reds don’t win another game.

The current Western Force team would beat the Reds

I could tolerate a relaxing of the rules where if you have played under X amount of caps in 7s u20’s Australia A ect then you could switch allegiances after say 3 or 5 years

However if you have represented the senior side then you cannot switch allegiances

The single rule change that could transform rugby union

Great article. Surely FoxSports would be willing to pay a small fee for braodcasting rights in Australia? Allow the content to played on demand via Kayo. The more content on Kayo, the more penetration into the market it will have.

Georgia undefeated in Europe's 'other' Six Nations

Let’s ask this question in 1 years time rather then pushing a rash decision (Crusaders or not Crusaders) in reaction to a deeply saddening massacre.

NZ government backs Crusaders on potential name change

That’s a fair point but i would argue this:

Between the sunwolves and the jaguars, who has the capacity to subsidise their team via the national union and who doesn’t?

Rugby Japan / the privately owned clubs have the capacity to subsidise the Sunwolves so really it is their fault they do not do this. If they pay it, they stay. Simple as that.

Sunwolves reportedly axed from Super Rugby

If a sport has turned professional, then unfortunately, its not all about fun and games. Players must and will seek the best price for their services as any accountant or tradie would.

In Australia specifically, these players need to be paid in a competitive market space moreso then NZ, SA or Argentina.

Would you rather Rugby Australia retain better talent (instead of heading directly to league) and hence improve the competitiveness of our Super Rugby Sides or support a Japanese team?

My preference would be for Rugby Japan and the Japanese League to subsidise the involvement of a Japanese team for the purposes of furthering Japanese Rugby – not recruiting 2nd tier NZ players.

Sunwolves reportedly axed from Super Rugby

If it is the case that the Sunwolves are not financially viable then fair enough – Rugby Japan should be subsidising the incremental revenue lost… or be at risk of this decision.

As much as I love the Sunwolves that’s the realistic decision SANZAAR has to take due to the financial situation of the 4 main Unions

Why should Rugby Australia subsidise a Japanese team when funds could potentially be redirected domestically (grassroots and/or professional level)?
