Ian aims to provide his own unique perspective. This comes from a lifelong passion covering many and varied sporting activities world-wide concerning balls of all shapes and sizes to those involving pure individual achievement and effort, together with the enjoyment that comes with observing the sporting characters that make this all the more fun. He has attended many major international events including World Cups in Cricket, Soccer/Football and Rugby Union but nothing was better than the two biggies at Sydney's Olympic Stadium. For him witnessing Cathy Freeman's 400m final at Sydney 2000 was right up there for its sheer exhilaration, passion and excitement. But nothing quite beats the experience of watching John Aloisi sink that penalty against the hapless Uruguayans to get the Socceroos through to Germany 32 years after their first appearance in the World Cup in 1974.

Good luck to Mel on getting a gig in free to air commercial TV.
Whilst we will miss her coverage and “easy on the eye” apprarance, I am sure that there are many other knowledgeable soccer/football pundits for Foxsports to hire.
Another thing, Channel Ten don’t have any soccer/football coverage to mention, so I guess she will now be covering Motor Sport?

What is puzzling to to me is that the ACB have a put an ex-Rugby International, albeit a classy Wallaby back and rugby coach, to manage as General Manager, Team Performance of Australian Cricket. Whilst one can’t question his credentials on the process to reach high performance, but how he really can have the insight on what is involved to be a successful international cricketer having not played the game at any first class level.
We need Rod Marsh and the Cricket Academy back
Thanks for that additional perspective, Johnno.
It was often difficult to understand his staccato responses during interviews, when he often didn’t convey a clear and concise message.
If he couldn’t get through to us, the punters, it was unlikely that his players and staff could follow what he was on about.
If some of these issues were so evident, why then did John O’Neill and the ARU persist with him?
I was amazed when his contract was renewed just before the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
What often also surprised me was the response from the Rugby community and media which displayed muted criticism at best.
But then he did have some extraordinary success in Christchurch with the Crusaders which can’t be ignored.
As for Alan Jones, you either love him or hate him.
There is no in between with his divisive personality.
So I certainly agree with ARU on their decision not to reappoint him.
In conclusion, I hope that this does not become a witch hunt, as Deans did do some positive things for Australian Rugby upon which McKenzie and his successors can hopefully build on.
Time will tell.
Why Robbie Deans didn't cut it
