I think Joe will help stabilise the Australian team and improve their ranking to 5-6, though no higher. He’s too good a coach for them not to improve. However, there’s only so much a coach can do with the cattle he’s got and he doesn’t have the cattle to take them to the top. The problem with the cattle is that there’s enough for 15 but to win consistently sides need a squad of 25-30. The Springboks are an excellent example. While Aus can field a competitive 15, the problem is beyond this 15, especially in view of inevitable injuries.
RA is living in denial if they think they can fix this problem in the short-term by appointing an excellent coach. Until they take seriously the need to fix the grassroots problem of rugby, things will continue as is. Fixing grassroots will take at least a decade.
I hope he does well but mark my words, the NZ Super sides will continue to thrash to Aus sides in Superrugby and the Bledisloe Cup will remain in NZ. He’s been given a poisoned chalice and I hope the public will not turn on him.

COMMENT: In trading Greatest Showman for 'boring' and 'pragmatic' Sleepy Joe, RA gambling with game's future

Well, it wouldn’t seem fair on everyone else if they had 6 wins instead of 4.

Legacies can't be won: History won't look back kindly on Rassie's Springboks

Nearly everyone laughed at Alan Jones when, after Rennie was appointed, he said Rennie was a journeyman coach who should not have been given the Wallaby coaching job. Look who’s laughing now!

REACTION: Rennie and Wallabies 'crumble' in Auckland again as All Blacks put on a 'masterclass'

Quite frankly, the Brumbies are a one trick pony. If they can’t score from a driving maul from a lineout on the 5 metre line, they’re gone. Against weaker sides they may escape but against better sides it’s a different story.

REACTION: 'Out played, out enthused' - Brumbies stumble into finals after Moana Pasifika shocker

Great piece. Fantastic to come across such a humble sportsman who thinks of others before himself. What a wonderful quality of character.

The remarkable school days that helped shape quiet and profound Siya Kolisi into an icon

What it does show, is that Hodge does not kick well under pressure. I remember a South African flyhalf (Naas Botha) kicking a conversion in pouring rain with a leather-soaked ball in 1980 to win the game against the Lions (at Springbok Park) and the New Zealand Cavaliers in 1986 (at Newlands)! Kicking under that kind of supreme pressure is the real mark of a kicker.

Australia let down by poor discipline in final game of the season

This will have massive financial implications for RA because is South Africa does go north, then their finances will be dealt another massive blow. I often hear how Australia should dump South Africa and team up with New Zealand and the Pacific nations. However, such short-sighted thinking forgets how Australian rugby benefits from the financial clout South African rugby brings. Once this goes, as it seems like it will, Australians will get what they’ve been baying for but it will not benefit their rugby.

Qantas stops spending on sports sponsorships in major blow to Rugby Australia

Actually, I have. I remember Stuart Dickenson, bless his heart, awarding 8 penalties against the Sharks playing the Reds with zero penalties against the Reds!

Oh dear, away Lions draw the penalty count and lose the match

Brilliant article, Spiro. Thanks for having the courage and integrity to write it. I agree 100%. Keep up the good work.

Israel Folau has been unfairly hounded out of Australian rugby

Write the Boks off at your own peril! I’d be more worried about the Wallabies getting past the quarters!

A lot to learn for the Wallabies from this weekend's Six Nations action
