Excellent & very balanced overview of Greene from Justin Robertson. He was incredibly lucky to avoid suspension and hopefully realises he is a spoilt brat on his last get out of jail card, take the opportunity to make a more humble apology and think of his team which will be booed into oblivion if he does not man up. Otherwise he will be the Nick Kyrgios of the AFL and take the team down with him.

Fans in the real world know at the end of the day you have to be a decent person and want their footy heroes, despite the pressures, to rise above them and be good people. That is what makes a champion.

The good, the bad and the Toby: Greene's gaffes may cost him superstar status

Brilliant article on Giants support issues: well researched and sound judgements. Agree the AFL did make a mistake going for the Sydney Showgrounds with its poor transport connections. Blacktown sounds a much better idea. The AFL also unbelievably schedule a Giants game on an August night in Canberra every year. This is invariably cold as hell and no-one wd want to sit outside on a cold Canberra winter’s night. Despite these constraints the marketing people need to capitalise on the Giants playing great footy. Local loyalties are antiquated these days: like some of the other major afl teams, they need to market the Giants more as a great Australia wide – even international product.

GWS are tearing up the AFL, so where are the fans?

Rhyce Shaw’s game plan against the Giants was to crowd the ball zone to prevent a running game, then shoulder charge and sling tackle key Giants players in the hope that his boofs could pummel them into submission. Good defensive plan, given that Rhyce has not much to work with at present- but a poor advertisement for the game. No surprise the gutsy and smart Giants beat the cordon in the 3rd and 4th to slam on the goals. So will all the top teams. Norths need a coach with a creative long-term tactical approach and recruitment plan to fit the evolving game. Caracella or Mitchell cd be the go – forget Shaw, Longmire and other old bodgies, .

What I want to see in North Melbourne's next senior coach

Well said Dalgety. The Toby Greene foot up incident has seen him turned him into a soap opera villain by hysterical half wits – when, as you say, far worse things have been done on the field. The latest tripe from Malcolm Blight blaming Green for the rule change and saying “He should never have been born” shows how some old players longing for the “good old days” will trash anybody. The AFL changed the rules: they are seeking to reflect community attitudes. Maybe the rule change has to be tweaked but let’s not use it as a vehicle for personal vendettas. The game moves on!

Outrage as Jeremy Howe robbed of a hanger by the 'Toby Greene rule'

Carlton needs rejuvenation through relocation. Maybe they shd be the basis of a new AFL Tassie team?

Five talking points from AFL Round 9

The Giants loss to Freo had much to do with a bad match plan. They gave up the centre in confidence they cd win from backline rebound. Not tagging Fife was just part of it – and also allowed Mundy to run riot. Trouble was Fife & Mundy had time to kick well to their forward’s advantage – who played brilliantly.
The Giants mostly fixed this against the Saints last week, by putting more into the battle for the ruck. They will need to do more work in this area as it is their main weakness and Hawthorn will know that. If they can at least break even in the ruck they shd win easily as they have more gun players.
The MCG is, however, also an obstacle: the Giants do not seem to be able to weight their kicks well there – especially if there is a bit of wind. Collingwood showed them in the Prelim Final how to precisely kick each side of the G. If the Giants can show they have learned their G lessons – and do better in the rucks – it will mean they are a real September contender.

A Giant task awaits at the MCG on Sunday
