Tongue in cheek maybe is best way for this farce of a competition…Because of course the kiwis have to have 5 sides for their master plan …
You don’t need to be Einstein to work out NZ has more talent than Oz… so 5 teams each … it’s just silly … and if NZ won’t add more teams and we want more that 3 which is reasonable to have some type of footprint I think we need to go another way without NZ..
At the end of the day you need a competitive competition, improvement and master plan is only interesting to rugby nerds like us in this page but it ain’t going to succeed in the real sporting market.
The Trans-Tasman conundrum, solved
Why are we trying to compete with 5 Aussie teams against 5 kiwis sides ?? It’s like Australia having 10 NRL teams and NZ also having 10 and wondering why NZ temas never win the NRL…they have league talent (lots) but much less than us…. Simply we have never had the same quantity of professional talent as Nz. If we need 5 teams which for the breadth of the game makes sense here then the Kiwis need 8 to have some type of level playing field in talent terms for an interesting comp…
I loved super rugby when we had 3 but thats not the point , the competition needs to be calibrated to be interesting for everyone, especially when it’s in more than one country … the structure for years has not worked and with out SA money if it continues like this … no one either side of the Tasman will watch it !

Good article, at the end of the day sport is about generating interest from spectators and that comes from a competition that’s dynamic and fairly balanced across teams… TT did not meet this requirement and probably never will with 5 teams from Oz and 5 from NZ…
It’s better for us to go alone and develop locally with local winners … it’s fanciful to believe that we can in time develop 5 super teams that can compete with the kiwis ,as super rugby has shown year after year ….. it’s like making big bash cricket TT and having 8 sides each side of the ditch , I love kiwi cricket but I doubt they have the depth to compete with Aussie cricket on that basis ….it’s difference in depth would make the comp dead in NZ after one season after lop sided contests …but it does not mean your top team can’t compete ..as the black caps show us ! let’s find another way …for rugby
