I think they did some gym work at YMCA/perry park in preseason as well.

No new coach bounce for Cahn as Gomes, Sky Blues hand Roar fourth straight loss

Agree with Waz’s comments regarding the deficiencies of the roar last night. Apartment from a lack of “quality”, the biggest difference last night was the physical side of the game. Despite not playing caletti, roar were completely outmuscled.

Lofthouse – lost most 50:50 battles
Zabala + lofthouse = trouble
Parsons – lost most 50:50 battles
Gomelka was better than caletti but can switch off at key moments ? tiredness; comparing him to Girdwood-reich is intriguing; Girdwood did a lot of graft and pressurised O’Shea. Girdwood allows Brattan to dictate the play.
Armiento — where should he play ?? not really quick, not physical enough but has a good left foot ??
Aldred — only player “relatively” strong in the air…but lacks pace and not great with feet.
Markovski — what is his position ? What are his skill sets — not fast enough, first touch lacking… will he better as he recovers from injury ?

Hore has been the biggest loss — most defeats have come since his departure. He can create changes – puts defenders in two minds with shooting or passing and tracks back well.
Brown and Hore on the left, berengeur and waddingham upfront with mileusnic at RW with hingert is a lot stronger side.

Any news on replacement full backs ?
Are we signing Trent Millard by any chance ? Ex roar you who has left the central coast in December.
What is he like ?

The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Round 11

Aldred has to start as captain.
Having a back “5” won’t work with our current wingbacks. He either plays Armiento or Noah Smith at left wingback.

If trewin and gomulka play at 6s then it should be a back 4.
He will play back 3 but he is stuck with his favourites of trewin and JCP.
Neville Aldred Trewin
Hingert JCP (sub for smith)
Gomulka O’Shea
Hore Armiento
Knowles

Chapman going is not a great loss as he lacked a left foot.
Armiento can’t defend. Is that why he is no longer a wb?

I d like 4-3-3 (subs):
Neville Aldred
Hingert JCP (Smith)
Trewin Gomulka
Milneusic (Hore) O’Shea(Carmadi) Armiento (Kruse)
Scepovic (Knowles/Majok)

Brisbane Roar roll the dice in the transfer window

I went to watch the Roar vs WU game on Friday. Looked forward to seeing a contest between Berisha, Diamanti and co vs the Roar but left with a bad taste in the mouth. I don’t want young australians to learn bad habits from the visa players. Good players like Genreau diving against WSW is a worry.

The breaks in play were ridiculous. What i find hard to fathom is the amount of time it takes to restart after such events —> surely the ball should be on the spot ready to take the free-kick, goal-kick or restart. Ref allows Kurto to have the ball 30m away from the player’s ‘injury’ then walks to the ball to bring it back. The ref then has a drink, a chat etc…

Can someone explain the stretcher ????
I thought that a player going down would be stretchered off to allow the game to continue ?

What is the rule on play stopping ? Is it for any injury that the ref seems concerning or for head injuries or what ? The only ref that i enjoy is the new iranian ref who does not put up with any rubbish such as ninkovic wasting time or the 6 sec rule. He just enforces the rules. He allowed play to continue whilst newcastle were having a team talk. Fair play to him.

Is attacking football more important to the A-League than winning?

I’m confused. Most systems with 3/5 players in front of the keeper require one wide player to overload the defence. Not sure if you call courtney-perkins or mcging a wb, fb, mid, winger or other term but one of them must get forward. Neither of them are suited to the role. Hingert could help but his end product is poor. I thought o toole can put decent crosses in and would be worth another go.

Why would anyone want to be an A-League coach?

Can someone explain how BR can play a back 3/5 with this squad ?
Roar lack attacking WB’s making it a back 5. CBs are poor at driving into space or finding passes. O’toole should be suited to LWB with the ability to cross and neat passes. He has been criticised by some. Im not sure what he did wrong.

When should managers move to a different formation ? Should they change it or simply the players. I think Fowler should play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. Many recruits are good midfielders. An extra pair of legs would give more options for the defenders. Inman, O’Shea, Mauk and O’Neill would be a useful quartet but need 2 options ahead.

Why would anyone want to be an A-League coach?

Fowler does have a recruitment plan at least.
1. Selected younger players (all less than 30) except O’Donovan
O’Donovan knows the a league and australian conditions so should be fine. Many overseas players struggle with the hard pitches, heat and fitness required. Visa players have often struggled with injuries. Getting older visa players runs the risk of injuries or top quality ones come here under an injury cloud hence on loan or cheap eg Siem De Jong.

2. Fit, Australian Players in Midfield
He has picked mobile, young Australian players in midfield so far rather than foreigners. Roar has lacked mobility in the midfield for a while. O’Neill, mells and mauk could be hard to break down.

3. Similar heritage
Why wouldn’t a British manager and British assistantsx2 select British visa players?? I haven’t seen any negative comments about Markus Babbel selecting German speaking players and Yeboah.

4. Visa defenders
He has selected 3 visa spots for defence where roar leaked goals. Not sure if it matters much if there are english, brazilian, greek, german or aussie in that position to be honest. English players from lower leagues might teach youngsters like O’toole and reardon some of the dark arts and some youth players how to head a football.

Overall, I was not jumping out of my chair at the signings but can appreciate his plan.
I would like to see how other clubs fare. This could be the biggest test for Steve Corica — how to replace Brilliante and maybe O’Neill ? Loss of Brosque? Melbourne Victory — loss of Barbourosus, manager who to anchor midfield. Adelaide’s loss of Isias
Melbourne City could actually come through this year with a relatively settled squad and an attacking manager.

Getting it right: The rocks and diamonds in A-League recruitment

Agree that coaching has been a major part at the roar but management/backroom/owners has a role. Alex Ferguson spoke of working well with owners/ management to sustain success. Melb victory consistently does well and is well managed. It is able to bring players back eg Milligan, Rojas, Barbour.. Syd fc have good management as well. Perth this year have a good manager, owner and administrator.

Central coast lost arnie and their CEO tho Newcastle. Newcastle them improved…
Wsw have supportive owners but lost popovic last year then have messed up recruitment and manager. Roar’s demise may be coaching but the management side has not been great to me. How many players have been dissuaded to come out left due to the payment fiasco and poor training facilities? Others know more but I think it has a role.

What in the world happened to the Wanderers, Roar and Mariners?

Regarding recruitment and player retention under aloisi. I don t completely agree with good players leaving. Maclaren and borrello left for overseas which is a selling point for John to attract taggart and mauk here.

He has recruited some pretty good players:
Corona,
Lopez,
Taggart,
Kristensen (held on for too long)
Bautheac

The only players that he would regret would be petratos and donachie.
Most others have done poorly elsewhere: clut plays nsl after being dropped by Newcastle, kostan…… rarely plays for Adelaide

I think that his problems are to do with a lack of flexibilty and having a style that anybody can fit into. He has put too much reliance on holman. This cost him petratos. He under appreciates the need for fitness the a league. In his first two seasons he had borrello, petratos and maclaren who were super athletes that greatly helped defend from the front and won games late. Mauk was brought in for his work rate but has been injured, exposing the older, slower Lopez, McKay and Kristensen. Last season Kristensen was out and there was no replacement.

Kurz would be a good example for aloisi. He has young, fit players without the reliance on one person. Isias is the key but is rarely out.

Aloisi feeling pressure at Brisbane Roar

Agree with RF — he is too slow. Roar need more pace alongside the skill of lopez. Lopez or Caletti but not both. Don’t have too many options other than Kristensen. Hate to say it but Pepper is the only defensive option with average pace.

Ground atmosphere is a major draw of the A league. Need the wanderers back at home with the RBB. Great victory team travelling to Parramatta should get people watching.

Why have so many people stopped watching the A-League?
