West Sydney 99% league? I think the soccer folk would disagree with you…if you are so confident it will fail then you have nothing to worry about don’t you? But you are worried….aren’t you?

GWS a giant leap for the AFL

You must have been whatching a different event to what I saw on the TV. Among the guests were federal minister for sport and local NSW boy Arbib, as well as the NSW Treasurer

GWS a giant leap for the AFL

Emric you do realise that the capacity of Manuka is 14-15k tops don’t you? The fact that the Brumbies and Raiders only get big(ish) crowds when they have finals is nothing to celebrate. Sydney played Collingwood in Nerandeera a few years back in a NAB cup game – got 10k…not bad considering the population of Narandeers is less that 5k! You play the Swans v Pies in Cenberra and you would sell out Manuka twice over.

GWS Giants just the tip of the iceberg

Not sure about the Swans by St Kilda Saints superstar and 2010 Norm Smith Medallist Lenny Hayes was born and bred in Sydney. GWS and the new Swans Academy will ensure that there are more to follow

GWS Giants just the tip of the iceberg

“Source?”

Petty petty arguments Farqwar

Everynow and again, you come up with some good posts, and then you let yourself down.

You know very well that the AFL and NRL sports loving public combined represents the vast majority of the sports loving Australians

As for your heart attach antics, I can tell you that I will not be loosing any sleep…in fact…I will be up watching the likes of Spain, Italy, Brazil Argentina etc…at least they play exciting football.

Speaking of which…I am off to see the Saints v Tigers…bye all

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

I would agree with this, except that if Australia do not host 2022, the next time the AFC put up a host, it will more than likely be China….and after that there are murmurings that India could be next….FIFA will not ignore 1.x billion Indians. Thats a long time to wait between bids. So given Europe and the Americas will also be in and out of bids/hosting, you would be looking at about 2042 I reckon….

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

ItsCalledFootball, you obviously have no idea who Kevin Sheedy is…and thats ok…you soon will.

He is the biggest promoter of our great game

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

“But outside of those communities no one really gave a hoot.”

So basically the remaining 5% of the sports loving public who are not supporters of the NRL or AFL

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

“if there was a true unity for this world cup bid we would postpone our seasons but i guess thats never going to happen.”

Not without MASSIVE compensation anyway…and why should there be….

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

And thats why GWS appointed Sheedy….not becuase he was necessarily the best coach…but becuase of him marketingn genius. Folau’s signing had Sheedy’s fingerpints all over it.

What FFA needs is someone who has both the pizzaz and coaching credentials

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

You must be kidding. Foster (or Les, or Finch or anyone else over at TWG) would never write an article praising or showing admiration to Demetriou. Sad really, becuase he is obviously fantastic at what we does and thoroughly deserves the big bucks…

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

How you enjoying all the massive Karmichael Hunt publicity there AF?

Is is eating in to your soul?

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

Love Sport, Admire Demetriou!

You should be filthy on Buckley, or perhaps even Lowy for giving him an impossible task to do

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

They had some issues…just not as much as the AFL

The NRL have more to gain with upgraded rectangular stadia across the eastern seaboard

The AFL get an extra few thousand at Kardinia Park (from the planned 36k to 43k)…and thats it.

Adelaide Oval is already going ahead, and Perth Oval will definitely go ahead without world cup regardless (WCE and soon to be Freo have waiting lists on memberships, and Subi sells out every week)

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

Karmichael Hunt (and to a lesser extend Izzie Folaus) signings stopped the nation.

Biggest football stories of their respective years…not surprising as they had a joint inpact on the 2 biggest sports in the country.

I’ll give you Australia in the 2006 World Cup stopping the nation…but not now…

FFA should have withdrawn their bids

This site is good too: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/attendances

Would be fitting if the record is broken at the end of this season…as next season and beyond will be harder to compare with new teams, more games etc.

AFL crowds up, but for how long?

Its a hard one re GWS. You could say 10k average….but if they schedule the big Victorian teams to come up for the journey, you could easily get 10k just of Collingwood, Essendon or Carlton fans

Anyway…this has nothing to do with the topic fo this thread…

Why WA doesn't need a third AFL team

Correct. SUb 10k crowds are for Rugby League and the A-League.

Canberra could be an option longer term…as could Darwin…depends on their population…

Why WA doesn't need a third AFL team

Some news that would not be out of place in this article…

Why WA doesn't need a third AFL team

Farqwar, It is the “national”game in terms of it being invented and played professionally only in Australia. It also happens to the biggest sport (professionally) in the nation. OK, it is not as big in Sydney as it is in other parts…but it is still number 1. So, can you userstand why its called the “national” game. Soccer, on the other hand, is indeed a minority sport. It is minor in every city and state that it is played in this country. However it is no more foreign that circket, rugby codes, and table tennis. Get it?

Deals with NRL, AFL may cost us World Cup

” the AFL who will have upgraded stadiums too move back into.”

While I generally disagree with your piece, the above statement clearly shows that your mouth/fingers move faster than your brain. Apart from a short term increase for Geelong (which will go from about 36k to about 43k) and then of course move back to under 40, name me ONE AFL stadium that is going to be upgraded.
MCG – nope, Etihad, NOPE, Gabba, Nope, SCG – Nope, ANZ stadium – Nope, Adelaide Oval – happening anyway. Perth Stadium – will happen regardless as the Eagles have had a waiting list on memberships for decades.

You mention further below that the NRL does not seem to be as aggressive. Well part of that is beacuse that competition WILL have new stadiums to move into!. Having said that however, neither the AFL or the NRL will shut down their seasons, and any disruption must be compensated in 2018/2022 dollars. For the AFL, that will run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

Deals with NRL, AFL may cost us World Cup

MLB is like cricket. Bat and ball are not the same as a football code. As I posted above, there would be no world cup in USA if it clashed with the NFL.

Deals with NRL, AFL may cost us World Cup

The BIG difference back then, as it will be if USA host the Cup, is that it is played in the NFL off season. Just try telling the Americans that they can’t have their football should their season and the World Cup clash…

Deals with NRL, AFL may cost us World Cup

And you forgot to add the Melbourne Victory too…biggest supporter base by far in the A-league…

Storm and Rebels are in the Melbourne wars together

And same for USA…no code wars there either…where American Football is top brass. Yeah participation wise soccer is king in the USA…but it has been for decades anyway..and I have heard of no talk from the NFL for wanting to obstruct the USA bid. OK, they are played at opposite seasons, but surely they would ackowledge that every world cup USA hosts is a free kick to say MLS.

Perhaps that is what the AFL is trying to do? Whilst it may be number one professionally, its probably only by a small margin to Rugby League. So, rather than expanding into its already traditional markets (e.g. Tasmania, third Perth team etc), where it knows it will always be a strong number 1, it is trying to exert its muscle in NSW and QLD. QLD has been a good success due to their sports loving nature and less anti Melbournian attitude of Sydney. But the Swans have done well too.

I feel Soccers growth may be severly stunted if Australia does not do well in South Africa. Assuming they do nott win the right to host the 2022 World Cup, I think the AFL will really consolidate and strengthen its position in NSW and QLD and put some distance between itself and the NRL.
