Haka isn’t in the AFL and is directed at opposition players. I referred to Player/Fan interaction

The AFL risk losing much more than just Adam Goodes

I truly believe the booing started an a non racist thing. Goodes, similar to great players like Buckley and co have always been booed by opposition fans. It’s reached the point where it needs to stop, either rightly or wrongly because the repercussions of branding the booing as racist has meant it has to. All parties are to blame for where this issue has reached, Goodes, the AFL, the fans and especially the media.

The AFL need to now make a stand by ruling the booing as anti social behaviour and eliminate it from the game. I think I’ve only ever booed once at a game, for a player who had thrown 3 elbows at players behind play in a game I’d gone to as a neutral observer. For some it’s an outlet, others hate it. Let’s just stop it as it serves no constructive purpose.

The AFL also needs to ban players from any anti social behaviour towards the crowd, throwing a spear regardless of cultural relevance is inappropriate. If players demand respect from the crowd then they need to display that back.

Can’t wait to see how well the team stack up now. People have been comparing them to Gold Coast all season and now we get to see where they stand with similar injury tolls to their structure starting to build.

The second ruck option might be a big concern now as Stewart hasn’t exactly shone in this area and he’ll need to provide more support now with the younger boys not being able to get to as many contests as Mumford.

You get the feeling that they have a bit more class and determination than the GC but now we’ll see just how good Shiel, Treloar, Whitfield and co. are without the big body of Mumford around. Got a feeling Ward might just prove he’s still their best midfielder in the second part of this year.

Mum Down: What does the loss of Shane Mumford mean for Giants?

Boyd seems to be too heavy at such an early age, it would be interesting to see whether this was deliberate from the coaching staff to prepare Boyd for being the focal point and absorbing the hits he will take in his current role.

I like comparing Joe to Tom, both joining the AFL within a year of each other and drafted with similar hype. Boyd is over 10 Kg heavier than Daniher despite being 1cm shorter. Daniher looks more mobile and a lot more dangerous up forward with his stats backing him up. At similar points of their career, Daniher (at the end of last season with 26 games) has averaged over 5 disposals and 2 marks more while averaging 1.2 goals a game.

With Stringer, Dickson and Crameri all being mobile I can see why they need a bit of a bull up forward to negate contests by bringing the ball to ground. From games I’ve seen, Boyd has being doing this extremely well, which is great for the team yet appears to to be affecting his confidence and development.

A tale of two Toms: Boyd and Hawkins

I’m not concerned about Ablett not playing as everyone could see how bad his injury was in the first two rounds. He was a liability and was a concussion waiting to happen with his good shoulder pinned in a tackle and the other not being able to absorb him hitting the ground.

I’m more worried about why Gary has decided to step away from the media during such a bad time for the club. This is where Gary should be fronting the media and displaying his leadership, if for no other reason but to keep belief in the fans. I’ll freely admit I’ve not been studiously watching Gold Coast conferences but I can barely recall seeing him or hearing him via any media forum to defend his club until this week.

Is the spotlight on Gary Ablett unfair?

Malthouse has been saying all season how he won’t quit and will see out his contract yet goes on radio and in all essence handed in his resignation letter. The board clearly had no other option than to do what they did.

Both parties have created this debacle and it will be fun watching the blame game between them for the rest of the season/decade/century.

Malthouse sacked, Carlton in disarray

You can’t judge Eade on his first year, he’s had half his best 22 and arguably his best/most important 7 players out injured, take those out of any side in the finals race and they’d be struggling to be competitive.

For mind I’m still backing Port to finish in 4th spot. They’ve got limited injuries and just need to regain that confidence. With a fairly open draw, only playing a top 3 side twice and playing a lot of 8 point games I think they’ll back themselves in now they’ve got the distraction of Cornes leaving over with. Shulz, Westhoff and Ryder have had 8 games together and should be starting to click but don’t appear to be after watching their last game against the Tigers. They need to get Westhoff into a wing/half back role where he dominated a couple of years ago.

As much as I love GWS they’ll drop too many games to get that 4th spot and the Pies will need Pendlebury, Swan and Sidebottom to play every game for the rest of this year to have a shot at it.

Flag race in three, but final eight wide open

I doubt Ross would want to go when he might be able to sneak another premiership tilt in if Pav can keep playing. I’d also doubt he’d want to go to such a purely run football club like Carlton.

If he bides his time until the end of his contract and wants out of Freo, both North and Richmond would have some seriously under pressure coaches. Either of these clubs would be a lot more attractive given the strength of their lists being similar to what he took over at both St Kilda and Fremantle.

If Freo wins the flag then bring Ross the boss to the Blues

Based on performances so far you’d have to go with Reiwoldt given he’s performed so well in a team that continually butchers the ball going forward compared to Hawkins in a dominant Geelong side.

Yet if you were going to choose a player for the next 5+ years I doubt there’d be anyone who wouldn’t choose Cameron which is why its a bit unfair to have him compared to the other two. Walker might have been a better comparison given he’s had a few more seasons and his numbers match up (90 odd games, over 200 goals) against the other two given they’re in the similar age bracket.

Which key forward would you rather: J. Riewoldt, Cameron or Hawkins?

Mumford is 28 and has a history of knee problems so probably won’t go too far into his 30’s. I don’t see it as being a hard sell. Tell them you might have to wait 2-3 years just getting games as an injury replacement before coming in as the first choice in what looks to be a premiership contending club.

I haven’t really looked too hard around to see what’s available, just giving some examples but a Currie type from North Melbourne could get there pretty cheap. Perhaps Gorringe even though he’s probably more injury prone than Mummy and Gold Coast would want overs for what he’s worth being a top 10 pick, but these are the types I would consider.

I may be missing something but the earliest pick I can see GWS drafted a ruckman is at 29 for Lobb in 2013 so they’re missing that early to mid 20 year old who’s ready to start being considered for selection. To be fair though, it may not matter as it’s been arguably 3 rookies who have been the best rucks in the last 10 years.

As for Giles, he’s probably regretting his choices now, Bombers are finals contenders but he’s behind Bellchambers at the moment who’s not exactly tearing up games.

Fee fi fo fum, the Giants' walk to the flag has truly begun

It will be interesting to see how they will handle their forward line when Patton eventually gets his body right. He’ll need to play the back up ruckman role as both Cameron and McCarthy are too small and it would be strange in the modern game to see four tall fowards running around, especially when a number of teams are only taking two. Is this a waste of his talent and will it further put his already battered knees under more duress?

Their ruck stocks look thin though looking in from the outside. If Mummy goes down, who is able to step up as the key ruck? Bringing in a talented almost developed ruckman and a second round draft pick in exchange for a midfielder like Coniglio might be a good list management call.

I’m looking forward to seeing their backline in the next two years. Can’t help but think the talent of at least one of Plowman, Buntine, Corr or Marchbank will develop into a star to go alongside Davis and Patfull. You could look at adding to the list of possible talented backs with Tomlinson who will need to further increase his versatility if/when Patton returns.

I love how exciting the GWS team is to talk about and they would be up there along with the Bulldogs or Port for most supporters second team. With all the talent it’s easy to get carried away with but if their development continues on its path I’m sure people will soon be hating them and knocking all the concessions they got when they become the next powerhouse on the field.

We’ll have to agree to disagree about Neale, I don’t feel he’s had 30 “very good” games prior to the end of last and this season.

Misread your comments and linked the wrong Hill with your Fremantle ties. I still rate Ellis ahead of Hill, both had their best seasons last year but felt Ellis had a greater output. I also highly doubt Richmond’s ability to develop a player like Hill, which I suppose is a different story.

There is a certainly a sameness to those three driven by the scars of first round draft picks past. Looking at the talent on offer in the top 5-6 picks in the last few drafts, I can’t help but wonder what a trade into a higher pick might have accomplished?

Agree that Heppell in hindsight in a no-brainer but he was drafted under a big injury cloud that Essendon had inside word on, which scared off a number of clubs off.

@Don – Hill was well ahead and in an earlier draft, but Neale still has had only 10 really good (some amazing) games. That being said it does break the mould of the traditional Richmond first round draft pick of this decade.

My point was that though Richmond drafted solid types, there wasn’t a lot more available to them. But as mentioned above, whether they could have thought outside the square to change that and could have provided the next couple of years with top 4 aspirations rather than having a solid platform but sitting somewhere near the middle.

Great article Cam but to be fair to Richmond’s draft picks in 2010-13 aside from Conca, I wouldn’t be taking a different player drafted within 20 picks or so of where Richmond drafted when looking for a midfield type.
2013 – Cripps (taken just after Lennon) may end up being a brilliant inside midfielder but I’d rather pass on another midfielder who can only kick it 40 metres up and down with limited pace.
2012 – Vlastuin is probably the best player from what I’ve seen out of any player below him, maybe Thurlow.
2011 – Other than Ellis, you’re looking at B. Hill or Neale as competition yet I’d take Ellis over those two still. That may change if Neale puts together a decent season, not just a few games.
2010 – Heppell or Prestia over Conca, but I’m a huge fan of his if he can get injury free.
The GC and GWS years ruined these drafts, even Wells from Geelong couldn’t get much out of them. I’m not sure Richmond could get anything more than dependable top 5-15 players unless they went for talls which is against what the club needed and hopefully picked a Tom Lynch, Darling or Cam McCarthy.
