100% true, very surprised he didnt make another appearance.

Test-mortem: Bazball ultimately a little too reckless against Australian crawl - Where Ashes was won, lost and drawn

Fair article sir. My only gripe would be the fact that bazball’s success relies somewhat on docile pitches, and as an aussie one of the best things to watch and one of the markers of our best bats are those that can play in swinging, seaming english green-tops. that will be a big loss to cricket.
Something that has gone a little unremarked is how england have managed to match australia this series with a pretty weak team. A spinner with no grip in his spinning fingers and a groin injury, james anderson clearly a shadow of his former great self, and all-rounder who can’t bowl anymore, a sub-standard keeper, and ben duckett who to me looks like a soft option at opener (albeit he outperformed expectations). If england find a better balanced side we’re in trouble.

Northern View: 'Aussie Snoozeball' hinted at a dreaded future. England have changed the course of Test cricket

Agree totally that woakes really stepped up to a level I didn’t think he had. Impressive from a pretty maligned player

Wonderful Woakes and Bairstow stunner sink Aussies as ball change debate, Stokes catch howler end Ashes in drama

Yep fair summary. Cracker of a series. I really hope we do take the time to honestly assess our approach to strategy though, our players being without proper plans to the English batters indicates a lack of foresight from coaching staff, and potentially a bit of hubris going in.

100% agree. we had plenty of chances to put this away and we flubbed the big moments. Honestly i think England at least deserved a draw the way they played. Lots of complaints about the ball, but 3/264 ? come on now #1 team in the world, best batter in the world at the crease and another top 5 already set, you should be winning from there.

Few people getting a bit carried away with Aus’s chances here i suspect. This article is interesting showing stats on chases between 200-300 through test history.

My takeaway is that results are pretty variable and forgetting draws, the bowling team is at least a toss up if not a better chance to defend 250 on a 4th innings pitch. England being without a decent spinner should help us though…

They couldn't... could they? Khawaja-Warner century stand on rained-out fourth day gives Aussies a chance

😂 😂

Warner loss sours Aussie comeback as Starc inspires England collapse despite drops aplenty

Carey’s spot in the team up for grabs you reckon? Def not doing enough with the bat this series…

Warner loss sours Aussie comeback as Starc inspires England collapse despite drops aplenty

i was going to say England’s constant milking of singles has been the biggest annoyance of the whole series. if anything they are too good at that

Warner loss sours Aussie comeback as Starc inspires England collapse despite drops aplenty

Josh Tongue really hard done by i reckon. Thought he looked pretty good in test 2 and like our situation with Warner, they need to start preparing for life post anderson and broad.

he has been and time will tell if he is starting to be past it, but credit where its due, i think england have really worked good plans to smith this series.

rick moranis yes! 😂

I see what you’re saying, but the variety benefit of having a slow bowler is super important too. With Starc having his workload managed we get a little same same with tall right armers bowling at 130-140km/h. Anyway let’s see 2nd dig will be the real tell on this…

I didn’t see him bowl, but only 6 overs for Murph? takes 2 for…i mean it would have to get to you being in his position, hard not to see that as insulting…

Warner loss sours Aussie comeback as Starc inspires England collapse despite drops aplenty

Whilst its easy to write off the attitude of England as OTT which it is, i think we should all also be adult enough to admit that England are actually doing things that we haven’t seen in Test’s before. The scoring rates they put up essentially mean that more results are available – and we should remember their team right now is pretty weak; Ali is weak, openers are suspect, Bairstow can’t keep and aside from Wood and Broad their bowling is not much chop (although i’ll admit Woakes is playing as well as i’ve seen him). We should be worried if they get a line up anywhere close to ours. Key to their ‘legacy’ will be if other countries fall into line and try to match them – even our run rates have felt on the high side, though i’ve no stats to back that up

If you don't worship Bazball then you know nothing about cricket - just ask anyone from England's deluded cult

Not sure if its arrogance or incompetence re: plans. the highlights of Stokes thru this series couldnt be any clearer, do not bowl into his body. and yet? Zak C the same, very dodgy outside off stump. I just wonder if given the years behind Hazle, Cummins and Starc bowling short is the only consistent thing they can manage. for all their mistakes, England have clearly won the battle of actually having and implementing more than one plan.

Flem's Verdict: Aussies will be galvanised to shut up England’s PR machine after washout kerfuffle

Sorry but it’s not warners job to drop himself. We have selectors to do that.

Selfishness, ignorance or pigheadedness? Warner putting own interest ahead of the team as farewell run of outs drags on

100% agree – replacing an opener with an out of form middle order bat or an in form middle order bat is a rubbish idea. Warner should just attack broad at every chance. aside from playing on in the first test he is getting out blocking on a 5th stump line. just swing hard davie!

COMMENT: Australia left it too late to fix Warner problem - we're stuck with him for the series

I think the break in tests has come at a good time for us. If we went straight into another i could see the momentum narrative being important. Aussies have to get brave with selections – zero point picking Murphy if you wont back him – i’m not sure about bringing green back whilst marsh is there. I know he was bowling to rubbish plans at Lords but he has 3 wkts at 57 conceding almost 6 p.o so far, and is out of form with the bat. I think i’d rather see Nesser and Hazle play for Murphy and Boland. As much as i want Warner gone we don’t have a better opener available and doing an England and shunting players around to spots they arent suited to is not a good strategy IMHO.
If we finally win a toss what do we do? Follow history and bat first, even though England want to chase, or deny england their preference even though we are not generally a good chasing team?

Flem’s Verdict: No momentum change after narrow loss but Warner on last chance and Aussies need Wood plan

It’s been said but what is obviously hurting us most is poor and unimaginative field placings and ill disciplined bowling. I’m ghesitant to just blame cummins – what about our entire coaching line up? Where is Mcdonald in all this?
Look at Harry Brook’s wagon wheel; pretty unthreatening through the leg side, bowl into his pads and have a couple of straight catchers just in case you over pitch? And the bowling to stokes – we’ve got to get a proper plan to him. Getting him angling down leg side was lucky in 2nd dig. I’d be angling across him outside off and float a 3rd man like 3/4 to the boundary – likes to throw his hands at the ball. As much as i dislike England cricket was great seeing them field mark wood, the first genuine pace they’ve had since simon jones and a while since anyone has bowled in tests like that. We need to find some spine for these last two tests; if england grab this next one we’re in trouble for the decider!

Ashes alive: Brook, Woakes, Wood the heroes as England clinch thrilling run chase despite superb Starc

Agree that bringing up the population argument now is just excuses. Our XI was very competitive with India in this series – we were outperformed when the chips were down, simple as that.
Of course with a higher professional playing population you have more depth of talent, but cricket is still a game of only XI – remember when Iceland dropped England at the Euro’s a couple of years ago? Numbers are no guarantee of anything.
There are many things we can do to continue Australian test cricket success into the future – as has been mentioned here many times, the most critical is figuring out the balance between T20 funding and test form/availability via shield cricket, and i would argue, offering incentives for our test-aspiring players to play long form county cricket in the UK

India's population has nothing to do with their win over Australia

First off – amazing reference to the mercantile mutual signs. Couldn’t agree more. Also agree totally wrt Hodge – spends far too much time talking about himself and dissing current players.
Substitution for mine has been a silly introduction – commentators spend all this time pontificating but has there really been any impact in a game? A more common sense way of doing it would be baseball’s pinch hitter concept – maybe bring in a big dog for 6 balls whenever you like or something.

A bit of fan feedback on a fantastic Big Bash season
