A well-known and respected NRL commentator, Jimmy Smith played professional rugby league in an 11-year career that included stints in both the NRL with the Roosters, Western Suburbs and South Sydney, and England's Super League with Salford. He earned over 150 first grade caps before hanging up the boots and switching to the commentary box. You can find him on Twitter @ThatJimmySmith

Spending increased dramatically in Smith’s time at the NRL but at the same time revenues increased exponentially as well. Revenues are set to increase exponentially again with the new broadcast deal starting in 2018. I would be very surprised if the NRL took out a loan any time soon. Tapped the Future Fund – yes. Loan – doubtful.

Well identified Albo

I think you are going a little strong Marc when you say the sport is addicted to gambling. The code is attractive to punters and therefore has an obligation to 1. maintain it’s integrity and 2. maximise revenues from that popularity. These are not mutually exclusive desires.

Great points steve

You could argue strongly that in a number of cases that is in fact true Perry.

Regulation of the gambling industry is a must. This is the case in Australia. The NRL would be derelict in its duty to grow the game if it knocked back the money from bookmakers. It is a fine line but one that all sports tread carefully.

Joe I agree with all of what you said here.

I thought Keary was at the heart of a lot of the good stuff that the Rabbitohs did at the end of last year.

Cordner, JWH….everyone fit for the season. Big change to last year.

Mitchell in the centers too….Gordon will be good for him.

Broncos out with the Sharks….Friday nights in Brisbane help (alot). Milford and Hunt’s early season perfromances will be crucial.

Good to be here Max.

That is Bernie Gurr at the Eels – he was CEO at the Roosters when I was there and he is a fine appointment for them. I think the loss of Junior Paulo is significant but other than that it is a good forward pack at Parramatta. Nathan Brown is a good addition – he played better than I thought he could at Souths last year.

If Billy hurts his shoulder again he will retire – any thing other than that and he will continue to play.

Yes Johnno you are right, but overall as a sum of the two would just miss out.

Thanks Max. Enjoy writing – can be challenging but that is the point right??!!

And I am sure that sort of nepotism takes place in rugby league like it does in all other sports and all other walks of life.

Works both ways as well Mike, as we can see by the John Cartwright letter. I was speaking just the other day with a former international who is an ex teammate of mine who was bemoaning the treatment of his son by a junior rugby league.

Eric and Eric considered Johnno but didn’t make the 5. Sattler, Raper and Lang all came close as well.

Ha no sidestep Jason. There were many that fitted the bill but you have to go with the top 5. I think that the development of Nathan Cleary could see him move on to this list eventually. And remember it is a combined score of father and son(s). When you have an absolute legend like Steve Rogers and a very, very good son like Mat makes them hard to beat.

I have heard the same Will – that Bailey Sironen is a serious talent.

The next article could be Younger brothers dominance over older brothers….Sironen, Johns, Smith (Darren and Jason)….

Post it WB.

JIMMY SMITH: Footy's back, and there's no easy winner at the Auckland Nines

Will have to correct you again WB – my last game of footy was at University Oval No. 2 (or at altitude as we used to call it!) Playing the Easts Beasts in about Rd 4 of the competition I had my nose splattered across my face. That told me it was time to pull the pin on contact sport!
