The Wrap: Code Orange as looming Rebels decision places rugby pathways at risk

in the know

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

It is an insult that RA can say they are shocked and unaware of the Rebels financial position until recently. Every franchise has had funding cuts since the new broadcast deal was cut and then Covid. They all had to endure hardship over the last 4 years and then some have been exposed and others hidden.
So if a franchise is in financial difficulty you might not tell everyone but you sure as hell tell the peak body because one they caused you to be in that position and two they are probably the only one to get you out of it. Also who says that the Tahs aren’t as bad if not worse, the rumours are they incurred a hefty loss last year and heading for same this year so RA act by taking the keys from them. Everyone knows the Brumbies are in a similar position, the Force were protected by Twiggy and he has said no more, which leave the Reds who I believe are the instigators of all of this demise.
Let us get to the cause of this problem and not cannibalise each other in a desperate fight to stay alive. Ask questions where question need to be asked

Thanks Geoff for the plug on A Day in Union and hope fellow rugby supporters post their favourite pic, video or memory on or around the 25th. Don’t forget to post with tag #adayinunion cheers!

The Wrap: Unfair triple-jeopardy law cruels the Blues, Brumbies building, Reds relief

A true rugby man who made it his life to support the game, you should be very proud and I am sure you are.
Best wishes

Grazing on the grass roots: Tales from rugby’s front line

Thanks Geoff for bringing these stories to life, as they don’t get told often enough.

I love Alison’s story because it is similar to mine. Not a club person but someone who loves rugby.

The Sea of Blue is very much attributed to Alison and is quite something special.

Hope others enjoy this series too.

Grazing on the grass roots: Tales from rugby’s front line

Agreed Geoff it is a sad indictment. We arranged an interview with 3AW for A Day in Union and without naming the radio host he had the audacity to play ignorant as to what Rugby Union was asking us to explain differences between that and League and basically said good luck competing against AFL.
Without blaming and shaming the previous broadcaster I think we can all agree that Stan is doing a good job. Content is now available at a reasonable price and Nine are showing Super Rugby.
We can only hope the next few years change the landscape.
And my liver is fine thanks, as I didn’t drink much having had to drive to each event.
Catch up soon. Cheers John

The Wrap: Everything that worked and didn’t work in Super Round

Geoff great post and great dialogue amongst a passionate supporter base.

I have heard from a number that the promotion was disappointing to non existent. As I follow a number of pages I saw plenty of promotion. But it was confusing and hard to determine who was responsible for what.

I do agree that we get little if any support from traditional media players, almost to the point they just don’t want to hear about rugby. But will assume that is because not enough of us ask for or give support to the game in this State. so a bit of chicken and egg. The next ten years should bring the game back to the dinner table with Lions tour, 2027 and 2029 RWC, and then 2032 Olympics. But we will also have lots to talk about with RWC for women this year and Bledisloe in Melbourne in September. Maybe as an audience we need to and could start demanding more media attention. I am led to believe that the support of State Government over the next 5 years will put the sport back in say top 4 offerings in this state. So up to us now to get it there and keep it there.

You talked about the games but not the events surrounding this week. I only got to four lunches, which was a lot, but the variety of each was outstanding. The Weary Dunlop lunch on Friday had the who’s who of rugby in attendance. Representatives from every club, rugby dignitaries and influencers, and having Mehrts interview Dave Rennie was worth the attendance. Every team plus Dave Rennie and co were out and about in the community all week. Saturday’s Classic Wallabies lunch was a laugh a minute with Morgan MC and Mehrts and Justin Harrison keeping us well entertained for probably an hour and a half. So the opportunity to get a much wanted exposure to rugby dignitaries other than poor old Griggy (who is one of very few who come out and entertain the Melbourne audiences with past tales and adventures) should have been welcomed and experienced by more.

I am not complaining about the supporters but do believe it is up to us to make enough noise and attend where we can so we can get and keep rugby in the media. Happy to be shot down with my comments, but hope we come together and make a difference

The Wrap: Everything that worked and didn’t work in Super Round

I love this story and it is even better when you imagine it being told with a Scottish accent. I too have done that walk back from Murrayfield and there weren’t any toilets along the route until you got near the castle.
The best bit was heading to the Grass Market for a few bevvies afterwards.
Love this new stream of stories and hope you all show up and celebrate #adayinunion

Thank you and we hope that supporters of rugby share your view. Ironically one of the true motivators was that there is an Int”l Day to speak like a pirate but no Int’l day to celebrate rugby

For the love of the game: The true believers looking to end rugby's 'finger-pointing and welfare mentality'

I am part of A Day in Union organising group and we hope people across the globe do join in, with the intent that next year it does become for all nations.
