@HKRed – Yeah but the games during COVID would have been booked a few years before it hit, so it was probably intentional rather than because of pandemic (and with Docklands followed by MCG it says money rather than COVID)…when you have no money the money becomes more important it seems. Kiwis living in Melbourne would love it, but the rusted-ons in Syd/Bris taken for granted.

Rugby News: RWC final TMO quits over 'torrent of abuse', Wallabies Grand Slam tour touted, Fiji lock facing jail

“The paper reports that the Wallabies will depart after facing New Zealand in September in a Bledisloe Cup fixture in Sydney – the first in four years.”

There’s plenty of reasons to be confused about some RA decisions, but I hadn’t realised it had been 4 years…this is unbelievable…in the biggest rugby market in the country there hasn’t been a Bledisloe – talk about taking fans for granted, there you go.

With Tate out and Fines-Leleiwasa under experienced I suggest moving Taniela to 9 – he won’t kick it and looked like he had a decent left-right pass. Please Eddy, please nudge White’s backside this week in training every time he slows the pace down or needlessly kicks it away.

Remember us? The soft reminder the Wallabies remain a RWC threat - and the one selection headache for Fiji

Player ratings: Skelton, Tupou Wallabies' best despite Donno's day out in World Cup opener

Agree on Pone – thought he was solid and showed good signs but faded with heavy lungs and an injury – I was at a lunch that AJ spoke at and he said Fa’amausili was the fastest forward and would definitely be on the plane.

Wallabies player ratings: Young forwards fire but key players struggle in Bledisloe heartache

Hey Jeznez, and take a look at what the Warringah Rats have been doing in Sydney for the last 10ish years. The hillbillies are there every week (maybe cause it’s close to the can bar), but they love it and the players honestly stay at the club (some of them) because of the support. But none of have jumped on a bus after a game and gone into town to watch the waratahs (not since Phil was playing). Phil did mention this today and that, for me, is a good start as we’re all rusted on but don’t make the trip…and by the way, Phil’s dad is still involved in the juniors club next to Rat park and is on the hill for every game, so he’ll be hearing all the right advice from the Hillbillies to get through to Phil over dinner at home.

'Dear Phil, don't stuff it up': An open letter to RA's new CEO, and the three priorities he must tackle straight away

Move it to Sydney or Brisbane – rugby needs to reprioritise bringing back fans that are disillusioned but passionate over battling year after year for a crowd in a minority market.

The Wrap: Another Super Rugby Round of hits and frustrating misses

You’re right though Carlos – Koroibete was offside even before Hodge passed…swings & roundabouts my friend.

ANALYSIS: Why the Wallabies are looking towards their tall timber

Ken,

I like Tom Wright – you just can’t beat sheer pace at times…I am worried though about execution under pressure, like not being in an offside position to receive the ball, getting left to right passes in front of the player not over his head or behind. This stuff kills me when it happens (especially from Hodge who is 27 and theoretically at his peak) and is part of the 1% that wins by 2 rather than loses.

Wallabies DIY player ratings from the 3rd England Test: Wright again and Marika magic

My god this is depressing…I’m rusted on but this piece shows backward progress.

Why it's a long and winding road back to the Australian way

Agree, he did some good things, but weighted accurately with a few poor ones.

I just don’t get it Geoff – Hodge is 27 so arguably in his prime, with exposure to pressure moments in his career that should have put him in good stead for a better (even if not perfect) pass for the try. If he was asked to pack a scrum I get it, but this is bread and butter for a back. This speaks to me of lack of effort in trying to correct his left-to-right problem over the last 7 years of his pro career…this truly is the 1%’er that wins a series. Not doubting his ability but am questioning the commitment to fixing something that is a huge part of the position he plays…practice beats talent.

England and Ireland prove why there’s life left in rugby's three-Test series

Unfortunately our lack of depth was exposed on Saturday – basic pass under pressure skills went missing at key times from guys (Reece Hodge hang your head) who have been around long enough to get the pass right. We score that and the remaining 60 mins are different. Papers over other cracks I realise but this highlights, for me, the problem we have in key positions with injuries going into a world cup.

Agree – Hodge has a boot as big as Banks (not as quick) but safe and defence is good. I like Horan’s view that Petaia is an option (not yet) or maybe Kellaway who I think played there a few times at the Rebels.

Reaction: Why thriller was 'almost perfect result' for Rennie

I think Banks had had his chance now…again. Whatever work he’s been doing to fix the things the coaches would have (surely) given him doesn’t seem to be working. Or the pressure of a test doesn’t sit well. We can’t persist with poor skills in a spot that is so important to attack/defence – shift him out and put Hodge in. And give Tate a go at run on – doesn’t look like his pass/kick was any worse than Gordon but his pace around the park looked sharper.

Reaction: Why thriller was 'almost perfect result' for Rennie

Tom Banks can’t get picked again…surely. Missed sideline kick, tackles missed, bad reads in defence – basic skills keep showing up.

Guts and grit: How Wallabies won a game they've lost so many times before

Agree Brett – White seems to step up to test footy despite SR form and (besides those bloody box kicks) makes decent decisions under pressure and knows when to snipe. First test last year was him at his best. He’s a decent test player – I’d rather he start and increase/slow the pace to suit the game and be replaced by Tate whose pass worries me.

White to miss France series after injuring knee at training

…which is exactly what he said – the 1% stuff that wins tight games.

What to look for when the hope disappears so quickly

Yep – he said assistant coaches would turn up unprepared…or at least not as prepared as the Kiwis when going through video post match. Mick would stay up all night after the game and all day Sunday to get his stuff together. I’ll not forget his view that Hansen would have flicked them if they turned up to an AB analysis session unprepared.

What to look for when the hope disappears so quickly

I had a lunch with Mick Byrne 6 months after he joined the WBs and he was already frustrated with the skillsets and available cattle. He had stories about McCaw/Reid ripping into each other for an hour after training focusing on the small things (and giving each other strong advice) and Carter doing nothing but catch/pass after every training. He wasn’t seeing that extra work in the WB team and reckoned some/most would have been dropped from the ABs with their attitude.

What to look for when the hope disappears so quickly

Mick Byrne had a lot to do with that – I heard him talk once about the extra 1% players like McCaw/Reid (who would rip into each other after training in a 2x2m square for extras) and Carter (who would practice catch pass after every training) put in and how he didn’t see that with the Wallabies when he joined. He was surprised and meant starting again with some seasoned players…I think the word he used was Entitled…

Why Jordan Petaia can be a better rugby player than Israel Folau

Wow Jacko…after a few Christmas beers maybe reread your note – I believe it comes with an Edit option.

The Roar's 2020 Tri Nations and Bledisloe Cup end-of-year awards

That’s exactly why it’ll be good to see how McReight goes, as Cane is in great form and will have to deal with him being a pest – interesting to see him link with Wilson in wider channels too and I remember one of Nic Bishop’s pieces pointing to how well he supports 12/13 (particularly now it’s Simone and Petaia). If he competes in his first test he’ll get more time, but if not Wright will get another go as he’s been underwhelming (or was overwhelmed…).

James O'Connor injury forces major Wallabies shake-up in team for Bledisloe 3

Agree, and it’s important there’s some experience out there with the low number of caps around the park…however, we’ll win with precision and Rennie’s “Brutality” which is not what Simmons brings. With Hannigan/Philips on to call lineouts and Hosea at 2.03M you’ll gain more than lose. Keen to see McReight have a go at Cane – he’ll be jumping out of his skin to get stuck in.

James O'Connor injury forces major Wallabies shake-up in team for Bledisloe 3

O’Connor out isn’t good news but good to see Rennie playing players in the spots they’re most suited, even though two will be in their debut. Could have easily opted for Paisami at 12. Good size and agility with Simone and Petaia in centres if they can defend well in the wider channels and AAA deserves his chance to show whether he’s a better choice in the first stanza or not. Still can’t believe Simmons is picked in the squad – must be to stabilise lineout in last period as he’s ineffective around the park.
