That is true but count the time it takes for packs to assemble the scrum after the ref blows his whistle till they start the process of engagement. I counted the time taken to pack for a 1996 test NZ v SA and the range was 12 to 20 seconds for the whole process.

Scrums banned from free-kicks, 20-min red cards and shotclocks: World Rugby tries to speed up the game

There is still the option of the sack if you get your timing right. A big reason why the lineout drive has developed is because lineout ball now is so clean to win with supporters (lifters) allowed since the early ’90’s. The hope is that the defending lineout will contest more and maybe it will not be so easy to set a drive from it. We will see.

It is interesting what is meant by the term Jackal. Players before 2009 could win the ball in the tackle by stepping over and picking the ball up. Josh Kronfeld was the king of this in the nineties. The ruck was still a contest with no player allowed to leave their feet, encouraging both packs to attend in their numbers with no sea-gulling.

We will have to see in the sanctions for the rule change come July.

The mark for the kick-off receiving will hopefully bring back the short 10 metre contest for the ball. Did this use to be the rule more than 10 years ago? Around then I noticed the deep kick usually taken by a midfield back.
Often with the deep kick the big defence would come and a penalty result either way from the collision with continuity of play gone. Also someone has pointed out to me that caterpillar rucks result from the receiving team trying to protect their ball.

Can they then be penalised for time wasting or is it just a freekick?

Forward packs have brought this on themselves for the eternity it takes to pack a scrum. If they were quicker about it then this solution would not be necessary.

This could be the moment for Millar.

Super Rugby Rd 12 teams: JOC and Tate return, Tahs let Pone off leash, Crusaders welcome back All Blacks duo

Highlanders are going to really miss Billy Harmon but the pack looks more stable these days. Crusaders playing Scott Barrett might be a do or die selection as I’m not certain about his fitness.

Here’s hoping he can do it against our neighbours across the Waitaki this weekend.

Tizzano is finally having the impact he backed himself to do a few seasons back.

I suspected Dunshea was the energizer bunny needed for the pack. The body language before the Force game was terrible. While the Force game was an absolute mess you got the sense they were really trying.

Once the ref sent it up to the TMO with the question he asked it was difficult for it to be overruled. Only evidence of a knock-on would of changed it really. Luckily it was not the difference in the end.

Highlanders in the wet great. I only saw the highlights but understand from reports that Cameron Millar stepped up and controlled the play well.
Sadly from what you have said Geoff from the agreement b/n NZR and ARU the Rebels are gone regards of a viable plan. The statements coming out over the last couple of months have been strongly hinting at that.

Makes you wonder if De Groot wanted the week off.

Super Rugby Pacific teams round 11: Harrison in for Edmed, Lynagh, White out, Rebels change entire front row

Daft ABs rest policy strikes again with De Groot sitting the game out for the Highlanders. MP should be favourites at home but at least there is some continuity of selection for the Highlanders.

All has been revealed. Yes there is resentment about not taking Paul Henry.
“…it also makes them more irritable and liable to deep-seated hatred of the world and all its inhabitants.” This may provide a deep insight about myself , thank you.

Super Rugby shows that the Bledisloe Cup isn't going anywhere - one selection could give the Wallabies hope

Frizell was the best loose forward at helping to keep your own ball. People turned more in his favour when he did those big runs last year but he always was the best 6.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

Blackadder at 7 is really a selection to get both Grace and Lio-Willie into the starting lineup with Christie rested.

Yes Geoff but this very same season earlier he wasn’t doing any of that. The consistency of messaging is lacking. Play in this fashion then next week have a go, play what is in front of you. I know it is not all the coaches fault but Dermody has shown a pattern for the last two seasons in charge as well his tenure with Tasman where at the NPC level he had a dream squad that struggled to score points from very slow ball.

He shouldn’t be Muzz. That was not Super standard rugby.

Thanks Geoff for the read. Highlanders Force was poor quality but they were trying I guess. I can’t say what went wrong for the Force but the Highlanders just look bewildered at what they are trying to do. Patchell did look like he knew but only lasted 20 minutes. It was interesting that Harmon said that the coaches had just told the team to have a go. I’m thinking the coaching group is out of ideas as their plans before have simply not delivered progress but regression. A player like Fakatava needs clarity about what the team is trying to do. If you take that away then you get what resulted on Saturday night.

That was bizarre. The ref made an assumption based on his bad line of sight for that tackle. Buck (Bok) fever effect.

'Purely coincidental': Chiefs coach defends bruiser after ANOTHER late shot leaves Tah flattened - but was it legal?

This is important. The game is under threat of being extinguished if it cannot get on top of the repeated concussion problem. We can slap each other on the back about how tough and brutal we play the game but that will soon become a distant memory when the game is sued out of existence.
