Completely agree. I think some people said some things while the moment was still fresh that they’ll want to distance themselves from.

Northern View: Cummins should have spared Bairstow, McGrath owes an apology, and end of an era for England

I disagree that the comparison is irrelevant. Starc took the catch, controlled the ball and got pulled up on a technicality. The “spirit of cricket” response would be to say fair catch, the rule is a bit silly, I’ll walk. Fast forward to Bairstow’s dismissal, out stumped due to a technicality over when a ball is declared dead. The “spirit of cricket” response would be to say I see your confusion/naivety over when the ball is declared dead, on you bat. All this shows that the “spirit of cricket” is actually bs and shouldn’t really be used as an argument.

Given Green’s form, worth thinking about Neser for Green?

Aussies make tough call on Lyon's Ashes campaign as opening batter drops out of squad

Nothing poor about it. Extremely factual and timely. The biggest concern facing the Aus cricket team with the tests to come next year.

Warner's woes: The Bull now the elephant in the room, and form slump can't be ignored anymore

“The Gold Coast Suns are not a bottom four side” They are 5th last only on percentage. They’ll finish within touching distance of the bottom four at best. The Suns are in a seemingly never ending cycle of appearing to be competitive, having good kids, then watch them walk out the door and returning to mediocrity.

How the Suns can salvage their 2021 season

I imagine for Cummins to be captain, he would have to change fielding positions? Can’t captain when you’re having a rest from bowling out in the deep.

No changing of the guard, but hard selection calls required for Australia

Cummins 14 @ 25, Hazelwood 11 @ 25 without the Adelaide test. Still commendable. Less said about Lyon and Starc’s figures the better.

Still couldn’t have bowled any worse than Lyon. Lyon’s first class average is only 35 too, so I’d say they’re comparable. Not to mention Swepson being 6 years younger.

Not only is the sky not falling, this Australian Test team is really good!

JL does seem to have a tendency to have his judgement clouded by those players that are his “favourites”. I was hoping with the inclusion of Bailey in the selection panel that there may be a bit more common sense. If Paine’s strong suit is his batting, then the likes of Inglis/Carey/Peirson would be left scratching their heads a bit. Having said that, they all only average in 30s, so no-one busting the door down.

Lyons figures in an abbreviated Shield season so far – 9 wickets @ 43. Swepson 23 @ 21. From the same number of games. Is it a surprise that this form continued into the test series?

Totally agree. My point is that there were options galore instead of the Burns/Wade combination that contributed to setting the tone for the series. Maxwell would’ve also been handy, though short of first class games/form. Couldn’t have done any worse than anyone else we tried at number 5. But I think the blame really rests with the bowlers, not getting close to bowling out a team on the 5th day with the supposed “best attack in the world”.

The “best attack in the world” argument is one Australia likes to trot out at an alarming frequency at the moment. I think Sydney and Brisbane in particular has shown this argument to be pretty thin. On current form we have two world class bowlers, then daylight to the rest of the attack. The belief that this is the world’s best attack has made the selectors hesitant to tinker, even when bowlers are obviously out of form and need a rest. If the world’s best attack can fail to take 20 wickets when bowling last in two successive tests at home, I would hate to see how the world’s worst attack would fair! The argument that Paine is the country’s “best pure keeper” I think falls under the same category. This argument has been pretty much copy and pasted ever since he was selected for the 2017/18 Ashes. Back then, it was a valid one. However now I believe that it’s a lazy argument to make without a lot of proof to back it up. If he is still the “best pure keeper” at 36 after the back half of this series, that’s a stunning indictment on the rest of the keepers in Australia.

Renshaw’s numbers are slightly misleading as he has a 168* which boosts his average from only 3 games, but still would’ve been a worthy selection. Even if he currently isn’t opening. Even Shaun Marsh (avg 97 with 3 100s) could have potentially been used as a stop gap solution given the injuries/form at the the top of the order. The Big Bash has some answering to do, only 3 Shield games to judge players form and summer is half over.

Some interesting comments on the future direction of the Australia test team. I believe the selectors should shoulder some responsibility for the series result. Selecting a woefully out of form Burns for the first two tests, and partnering him with the inexperienced Wade robbed us of our usually ascendancy at the top. This helped set the tone for the rest of the series. The effect of not realising that our bowling attack needed a refresh, especially after Sydney and especially Starc, was evident on the 5th day in Brisbane. A fresh, local bowler, in Michael Neser may have proved valuable. At the least he couldn’t have gone any worse than Starc. Also it is worth noting that in the Sheffield Shield, which feels like ages ago, Mitchell Swepson has 23 wickets @ 21 while Lyon, from the same number of games has 9 @ 43. Is it suprising Lyon’s form line continued into the test series.

Cheers. I thought that was the case. All a moot point anyway, can’t see it surviving beyond this season.

The Big Bash has announced three new rules for BBL10 and they're ridiculous

Clarification on the X-Factor Super Sub… Can they bring them in anytime after the 10th over of first innings, or do both teams have to make an immediate decision at that point?
