Well said – The salary cap in Rugby is fatally flawed; it assumes there is an unlimited/saturated talent pool as in AFL, League and soccer, which is way, way, way far from the position. This whole idea needs to be revisited along the lines of having a core playing squad of 40 with and extended playing squad of 15 taking the total squad to 55 which you can pay whatever you like – if you want to pay the top 3 players in you side $100m per game and you can actually raise that amount of coin, go for it! It is the limitation of squad size that will stop the Barca scenario in Rugby (i.e. one side is so rich that they buy ALL of the talent so that no-one else can have it).
Yes, this will raise direct costs, but stops the stupid position we find our game in where 90% of the players currently playing overseas would give the starting 15 for the Wallabies a run for their respective positions (so much for stemming the torrent to French Top 14 and the Aviva Championship, eh BIll??)

The solution to the shambles that is Australian rugby (Part 1)

The Reds even managed a bigger crowd against the Lions – the only match they were a chance to win this side of the Internationals break. Add to that the Rebels crowd this weekend (playing the Brumbies) was bigger than the Brumbies last week. The Force regularly attract 10,000 per game compared with the Brumbies 7,000-8,000 (refer AUStadiums figures), which again is more than the ‘Tahs (8,500-9,500).
I agree it is a bit of an overreach to say “lower than any other SR side”, but the figures are clear – the Brumbies attract lower crowd numbers that the Force and Rebels

Look a the financial statements – ARU have been bailing out the Brumbies effectively every year since 2009, not to mention the $2.5m top up the ARU give the Brumbies Wallabies players every year (not included in the $18m by the way…)
