Exactly. After all, the No 4 spot is now taken!

Picking apart the selectors’ choices in the Bailey era: Masterstrokes tarnished by blunders as Australia face future upheaval

Just get used to Smith averaging 35-40 against good teams. The days of 60+ are gone

Then you’d have to drop Smith. Lol!

OMG … I had assumed we were talking about Narendra Modi!

Talk is cheap: Only real investment can stop Test cricket ending up like rugby league

I wasn’t expecting that

'Best six batters in the country': Smith will open and Green returns as Bailey denies Bancroft rift over Sandpaper saga

And if he did come back, you’d have to drop Smith because you’ve brought in Green to bat No 4 and you don’t need another opener!
Please, do it now!

It might, but Smith is now a 35-40 per innings batsman against good teams

Also, we have to get used to Smith being a 35-40 average batsman against good teams. The 60+ days are gone.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Warner turned round, unretired, and said he was available for Tests again.

The selectors would HAVE to pick him. “The best six batters in the country” and all that.

Come on, Dave, do it for the LOLs

October 7?

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

Agreed. But again, I don’t think I’m the one showing a lack of self awareness

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

As you say, he could have commented on the October 7 massacres. So tell me, why didn’t he?

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

Again, respectfully, I disagree. A state of equivalence did not NEED to exist on October 7. Lives had already been destroyed and human rights obliterated on October 7. Why could not Khawaja have spoken out then about all lives being equal and human rights being universal at that time? Why wait two months?

And think what an impact Khawaja would have made had he taken that stand at the time.

We will also have to disagree on the coverage of the war in Gaza, which I see as overwhelmingly sympathetic to the Palestinians. But I doubt that we will be able to convince each other.

Thank you, RayinSydney. Summed up my feelings exactly.

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

You don’t. It might lend balance to your views, though, and speak to your credibility

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

I disagree. Khawaja’s slogans about human rights and all lives being equal applied equally at the time of the October 7 attacks. Yet as far as I can tell, he did not express them publicly for two more months.

And I wonder what news coverage you are getting if you think the Palestinians’ situaton has been covered insufficiently sympathetically

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

As far as I can see, Khawaja is not saying the war in Gaza is “also” a tragedy because that would, to me, imply that he “also” criticised the October 7 attacks at the time. As I’ve said, I am happy to be corrected, but if he did issue such criticism, I missed it.

He’s entitled to his own opinions, although I question whether the national team is the right platform from which to express them. However, he can expect those opinions to be debated and questioned

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

True. But I’m in favour of keeping the cross-contamination to a minimum

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

Yeah, thanks for that. Nice of you to distinguish Israeli civilians from armed forces personnel murdered in the hamas terrorist attack, hence lowering the total figure of victims considerably. Cunning! You made no such distinction between fighters and noncombatants for Palestinian casualties, I notice.

Yes, the Hamas attack was condemned by many people (perhaps even more than the number who condemned Israel for the deaths). However, that’s not really my point. My point is that, unless I missed it, Usman Khawaja was not among those condemning the October 7 attack. I’m happy to be corrected, but he seems to have waited more than two months before launching his campaign to respect human rights and the sanctity of life.

Agree with almost every word. I have a daughter on the opposite side of the divide too. She is incredibly ignorant of the historical context. I don’t press it too much but I try to teach her about some of the dates and events. I think it’s an age thing. I grew up with the ripples of the Holocaust and the pogroms. Of Entebbe and Munich. The Six Day War and the Oslo accords. Terror on the airlines and flowers in the desert. All she knows is that the Palestinians are victims.

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

Not disagreeing that it is traumatising. But seriously, what about the October 7 attacks? Was not that the time to be speaking out about the butchering of the innocents?

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

I don’t think I’m the one virtue signalling here

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

Where was all this compassion on October 7?

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

I am just puzzled about the timing. I mean, he had the whole World Cup — the perfect stage — to protest about the massacres in Israel. Why wait two months? All lives are equal, right?

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

Fair points. I’m just wondering why he didn’t go in to bat for all the Israelis killed on October 7.
