The Highlanders may have lost a couple of greats–Smith and Frizzell–but they have also culled many poor players. They’ve recruited wisely and now look a much better balanced side than they have been. That forward pack will give most other sides plenty of trouble.

The Gilbert- Tele’a midfield will have some punch… and best of luck to all those trying to tackle Tavatavanawai. The Highlanders will be a lot higher than 11th on the table.

Joseph’s injection a welcome addition, but Highlanders face uphill battle with new blood aplenty in transitional season

Even the NZ system this year failed to get one NPC coach as head of a SRP team
Only you could come up with something that daft.

Every NZ SRP head coach has coached at NPC level at some stage of their career:
Cotter: BOP
Laidlaw: Taranaki
McMillan: BOP
Dermody: Southland, Tasman
Penney: Canterbury

There are obviously more NPC coaches than SRP positions. It is therefore unremarkable that most must take a longer path before landing a SRP job. All of NZ’s SRP coaches travelled via the NPC.

'Our system is failing': The 'crisis' sinking Australian rugby - and the 'crucified' coach that shows it

Understand this SRP has nothing to do with SANZAAR,
Until the very recent creation of a commission to run SRP from 2024, the competition has been run by SANZAAR. How could you not know this?

Why don’t you avoid SRP completely: stop commenting on it and find something else to whinge about?
Me? I can’t wait for it to start.

RA's huge Rebels admission: Future could depend on wins and losses, Wallabies review imminent

Another interesting and upbeat article. Nice work.

Your description of Hamish Bidwell is inaccurate. His record at every other site is that of an ill-informed, unserious hack with a serious lack of intellect. His efforts to play the contrarian will wear thin very quickly. I will not read anything the fool writes.

'There's a responsibility': Waugh's message to Tupou as RA CEO rejects flight risk fears

The Rebels’s national players will be get first dibs, then the second tier will be offered dismal money here and opt for O/S for the money.
What makes you think ” second tier” Australian players would be attractive to OS pro clubs and that any money offered wouldn’t also be dismal?

'There's a responsibility': Waugh's message to Tupou as RA CEO rejects flight risk fears

Warning signs have been there for over 20 years, for years RA relied on Sth AF ratings to boost revenue, further allowed NZ to make most big calls.
RA had cash to burn post RWC 2003. They blew it… all by themselves.
It was SA and Australia that forced an expansion of S12– against the wishes of NZR– the act that severely degraded the competition.

It was RA that demanded an equal share of the broadcast revenue even though Australia contributed the least to the “pie”. In the final years of SR, NZR was the biggest cash contributor. Even now NZR is gifting RA $8 million per year. If NZR really had been making the “big calls” in SR, RA would probably be in a better position now.

Your suggestion that Australia start a “rebel competition” is a wild fantasy.

The biggest one is not getting a Super Rugby contract. Play league or go on the dole.

if Sky NZ does not keep NZR happy, then NZR can start broadcasting on NZR+ [its streaming platform] to its NZ fans, who will pony up, and Sky NZ can go and die in a corner. And Sky NZ knows it. 😂 😂
So true. I wonder when the CEO of SkyNZ last had a decent night’s sleep.

Also,we are mostly talking about the All Blacks here,so they depend on male participation, which you confirm is down in all sports.
I said young males. The number of adult males playing rugby in NZ increased last year. The number of young males playing anything will depend on the number of young males.

I doubt the broadcasters would offer the same figure to New Zealand without access to Australian markets.
You never seem to comprehend the info you get given. And these “Australian Markets” you mention: are they the markets that have left Rugby in Australia on its knees?

Once again: NZR’s broadcaster, SkyNZ, sells subscriptions to NZers. Without rugby, it has no business because it is rugby that drives potential customers to them and retains existing customers. Keeping Rugby behind this paywall, has so far benefitted both NZR and Sky.

The downside to this arrangement is that a generation of people, since rugby went professional, have never had access to free- to- air rugby on a regular basis. This may have reduced interest in rugby in some sectors. The compromise being discussed is for possibly more free-to-air, with advertising, while retaining enough behind the paywall that a rugby fan would still subscribe.

All this has nothing to do with “Australian markets”. SkyNZ does not sell subscriptions to Australians. The most watched games on SkyNZ are All Blacks Tests and Super Rugby local derbies.

I know in Otago the number of Junior male teams reduce…
The population in the Otago region has been declining since 2016. That’s the reason.

Dan,are you sure you are not manipulating these stats to suit your narrative?
The only relevant narrative is that the stats show young male participation in all sport in NZ has declined. Cricket participation, for example, has fallen off a cliff.
NZ’s demographic changes and the chaos caused by Covid are factors in this change. These are rarely examined seriously. But any decline in junior male rugby players, whatever the reason, is seized upon as proof the sky is about to fall.

The phenomenal increase in female rugby participation (and female league also) barely rates a mention in the news… because good news doesn’t fit the agenda of some. Apparently it’s only what males do that’s important.

The question is, how long can they sustain that if a lot of their star players go off and play in Japan and Europe?
They become “star players” by first being prominent All Blacks. Contrary to what many believe, the star players in NZ are very well paid… when they are at their peak. Japanese and European clubs are willing to pay huge sums when a player is past his peak. That’s the difference.

What is remarkable is the number of NZ (and Aust) journeymen earning a good living playing overseas. I doubt that does much good for local players. They are the ones you should be worried about.

and most ominously the Warriors can get 22,000 crowds.
Participation in rugby league in Auckland, the sport’s home base, has declined more than any other sport in the country. Male league numbers are down 23%. That doesn’t look like a sport about to dominate rugby.

If Australia left New Zealand would not be able to pay the elite players wages in their own competition with the TV money lost.

A fantasy. The majority of NZR’s broadcast revenue/sponsorship comes via the All Blacks. The elite players are paid from that revenue. Without Australia, NZR would automatically save the $8million it currently gifts them. That would pay the salaries for a SR team for a start.

Cast your mind back to when SRP was first mooted. NZR was advocating a NZ- run competition with just two or three Australian clubs invited to join it. That was at the behest of SkyNZ. They wanted quality not quantity.

SkyNZ pay NZR handsomely so they can retain their subscribers. With no rugby, SkyNZ is kaput. That kind of dependency is not a feature of the Australian scene.

Not only that, but an unimaginably cashed up NRL monster having consumed Australian rugby would look to pillage and devour New Zealand’s playing pool and markets.
Over thirty percent of NRL players are already Kiwis. It is idiotic to even suggest that rugby league could ever displace rugby in NZ. Even the league administrators say that.

@JimBob
Fabian Holland is from… Holland. Has been in NZ since he was sixteen. Only the years after he turned eighteen are counted for eligibility. He had his heart set on playing for the All Blacks from a very young age.
Stats:
Age: 21
Height: 2.04 (6’8″)
Weight: 118kg (18st 8lb)
NZU20, Otago, Highlanders.

There has also been a significant decline in male participation in Rugby in NZ…
You exaggerate. The number of teenage boys playing rugby has declined by just 2%. However, the number of adult males playing rugby increased by 3%. Women’s rugby in NZ is booming.

Before anyone suggests rugby league is eating into rugby in Auckland:

Sport New Zealand statistics show playing numbers in rugby league have declined faster than any sport in the country’s biggest city during the past 10 years. Male numbers have declined by 23%.

So if/when professional rugby in Australia goes down the gurgler and all NZ then has to offer their leading players is a re-un of Super Rugby Aoteoroa
\What makes you think that is “all NZ has to offer” ?
You seem to be sitting under a dark cloud.

Add this:

And somehow, its all doom and gloom.

I think Holland will come into consideration this year.
He is some player. Got All Black written all over him. It’s not often you see someone that big, that athletic, that hard-nosed… and just twenty-one. Selby-Rickit is also playing well.
