Passionate Western Bulldogs supporter who spent much of formative years standing on a milk crate at Goodison Park watching a then successful Everton team in the days when English football was not dominated by 4 or 5 very rich clubs.

Swans got smashed by GWS in their first final in 2016 – that probably cost the flag rather than a couple of umpiring decisions in the GF only one of which directly cost them a goal and none of which were near the end of the game. Swans forward line apart from Buddy and lack of forward pressure over the whole game compared to Bulldogs and a midfield, which apart from Kennedy was generally beaten cost them the GF. Final margin could have been a lot more had it not been for Bulldogs poor kicking into forward line and good Swans defence (and of course the controversial last quarter disallowed goal). Continuing to blame the umpires is unsporting sour grapes and just covers the fact that the best team on the day won.

Cat, what they do is cowardly and/or stupid/ignorant – I was suggesting calling them out for what they were are doing not “calling them names” that is not hypocritical.
Ignoring them does not seem to make them go away as they seem to feed off each other but if every time we saw one of their cowardly comments we reported the comment maybe it might have some impact eventually.
How do you see they should be responded to or are you happy with these people?

Footballers are people too, so treat them as such

Agree with you 100% Conor but sadly it is the way our world operates now. You even see it in the responses on
Roar – there are a lot of keyboard cowards out there who hide behind their keyboard anonymity but who in real life would literally s*** themselves if confronted by the person they are abusing.

The test is if you would not say something to someone face to face then don’t say it on social media – people who do should be called out for the cowards they are. I don’t see the Instagrams, Twitters or Facebooks of this world really trying to manage the problem – they have too much to lose and it’s too hard. It’s up to other users to call out these cowards though even that comes with the risk of you ending up as the abused.

Unfortunately a lot of these people are either too stupid to realise or don’t care that their comments can really hurt someone – as for Clokey it takes a real man and a lot of bravery to admit what he has been going through but hopefully it makes someone else suffering feel a little less alone. Good on you Travis and congratulations on the career that these keyboard cowards can never dream of….

Might be a quick read…..

Jake Stringer's trade has turned into a lose-lose for the Bulldogs

So they should not have been honest and should have either said nothing at all or lied and said they wanted to keep him and say it is Jake who wants to leave when the whole of the afl and most of the media knew their were real issues with him at the Dogs never mind when his ex fiancés statement came out suggesting that other Bulldogs players were not happy with him either. Even Adam Cooney who was mates with Stringer has been saying he has a lot of issues including lying to the coach.

Don’t you think the Bulldogs might have had no option but trying to limit the trade damage, admittedly not very well, because all of the information was coming out anyway and unless they tell him and his manager they want him out, which is the right thing to do, how do they get a trade?

Yes maybe they could have handled it better but ultimately it is Jake Stringer who created the problem. I hope he gets his act together because he is potentially a very good player but if he is destructive at the Dogs than that should happen somewhere else even if it comes at the cost of a trade lower than his value.

Jake Stringer's trade has turned into a lose-lose for the Bulldogs

Actually Bevo did not call Don Pyke disgusting you need to read beyond the headlines he was commenting on public criticism of umpires integrity not any particular person. As for Tex Walker he’s entitled to express his concerns to a player leaving the club however really don’t think he should have trusted the media with it.

Halt the hysteria, Tex Walker was just being honest

The only thing the Dogs have done wrong in the context of trading is admit they wanted to trade Stringer out. Everything else is down to Jake himself. What makes people think other clubs were not well aware of everything that was going on – certainly a number of people in the media were. Unlike many people making comments here they do their “due diligence” before making decisions on players.
Stringer has the potential to be very dangerous in the Essendon forward line where Daniher is the main target – Essendon are trying to get him at below what he is worth as they are trying to complete other deals too – if they did n’t think he was worth chasing they would not have bothered.
Interesting that as a “rabble” and not a destination club according to some, that one of the most respected players in AFL Jackson Trengove chose the Bulldogs as has Hayden Crozier so they must be doing something right.

Good analysis Ryan but do you think the manic intensity required for the “small ball” game plan is sustainable for ongoing success? We saw the Dogs drop off this year (though still finish 50:50) and can Richmond hope to sustain if they start to get a few injuries next year? Was the plan more caused by necessity than design in both cases? If small ball is the immediate future why did the Dogs recruit Jackson Trengove? Maybe just to play the Crows.

The AFL's small ball revolution is here, and it is shaping the trade period

Never mind the fact that the draw is not equal either so it is not really reasonable to suggest the team finishing first is actually much if any better than the team finishing third or in the case of last year seventh. So who should get the “homeground” advantage.

Is it time for a best of three grand final series?

Check your facts re 2016 the MCG is not and never has been the Western Bulldogs home ground. Swans have played at least as frequently at the MCG as Bulldogs if not even more given all their finals experience. It is Hawthorns home ground and Dogs beat them in finals, also beating Eagles in Perth and GWS in Sydney – so they had no home ground finals at all. They also beat Swans in Sydney in 2015 and 2016 – so on that basis there is absolutely no argument that the result was due to home ground advantage. Note that in 2015 preliminary Crows beat the Bulldogs at MCG rather than game being at Bulldogs home ground at Docklands – but Bevo was happy to play there as you need to be able to win at the MCG to win GF. If your team is good enough on the day they will win anywhere – Tigers were good enough this year and Dogs last year just let them enjoy it.

Is it time for a best of three grand final series?

2016 Swans played as often at MCG as Bulldogs it is not Bulldogs home ground. You want to make it a home ground get more supporters there that’s what influences more on the day. When teams join AFL they join on basis GF is at MCG – what do you do with the 50,000 plus who cannot get in in Adelaide, Sydney, more in Brisbane and Perth?

Another fake news flag for Victoria unfairly won at the MCG

Agree re how Swans, Geelong and Hawks have gone about it but how about you judge whether Bulldogs were flukey in another 5 or 6 years just like Hawthorn 2008….I recall their former president questioning the coach’s abilities in 2009.

Rebuilding is for chumps: Hawthorn already primed for a new era

The home and away draw by playing only 6 of 17 teams twice is what ruins the integrity of the competition not the finals bye. Have an equitable draw then get rid of the bye as it is the draw leaves open the question of whether or not the top four are really that much better than teams finishing 5 to 8 – you could argue the bye equalises that out a bit but the top four still have the double chance. Coping with the potential loss of momentum is a challenge for teams coaching and training not a reason to get rid of the bye.

What does the AFL need to fix ahead of season 2018?

Thought Swans were playing another non Melbourne based club….or have the Crows moved from Adelaide…..

A right of reply from the 'soft free'

Yes the MRP got it wrong again in a decision with the poor maligned and misunderstood victim in all this, Toby Green. Twice he has gone to the MRP on trumped up charges against 2 of the most physically intimidating Bulldog players who both used their heads in an effort to paint him as some sort of psychopathic bully boy. First Caleb “angel face” Daniel had the audacity to head-but Toby’s fist with his helmet when Toby, as the ball player he is, was just trying to hit the ball, luckily Toby’s hand is OK – MRP conned badly on that one.
Now we have that other little Bulldog pest Luke “choirboy” Dalhaus getting off with what was a deliberate attempted trip (and Toby feared an attempt to tunnel him) while Toby was leaping bravely for the handball. Luckily when Dalhaus managed to bite onto one of Toby’s boot stops Toby had sufficient athleticism and peripheral vision (as his main focus was still the ball – all the experts attest to that) to be able to push his leg straight and pivoting masterfully against Dalhaus’s face pirouette gracefully in the air and deliver a perfect hand ball to his team mate.
Sadly the umpire was conned (these little bulldogs do it all the time just look at all the comments from opposition supporters) saw the blood and gave a free kick against and reported Toby for rough play – at least the MRP saw it was the choirboy who was at fault and were brave enough to change the charge so they did not have to suspend you.
As some of the expert former players and media commentators have told us it was clearly Dalhaus’s fault as on a normal size player Toby’s boot would have struck the chest (just like it did to Bulldog Toby McLean in the prelim last year, he is still waiting for the stop mark welts to heal…..that’ll teach him) and it would have completely gone over Caleb Daniels head.

The MRP has failed, letting the dangerous Toby Greene off

So who did deserve it last year?????
