He’s not young anymore and hes been around a long time now and has never consistently managed a game as the great fly-halves of the past did for the AB’s or the Hurricanes. He has unbelievable skills, but game management isn’t among them. It is what it is.

Five talking points from All Blacks vs Wallabies Bledisloe 2

Agree with just about all of this, but you missed someone. The worst defender on the pitch was an AB, and it wasn’t close, he was dreadful and everyone gives him a pass (excuse the pun) for it. Aaron Smith was a giant reason we conceded 5 tries, not all his fault, but hes such a liability on defense I cannot fathom how we keep starting him.

Was that a watershed moment for the Wallabies?

Great game, I think the WB’s actually defended better than the AB’s, seemed that every time WB’s had the ball for more than a few phases they scored a try. They took their opportunities. AB’s got there in the end but their defense was horrible and was for the last 30 mins last week..AB’s have conceded 9 tries in 110 mins…that’s awful.

Too many defensive errors to be called the greatest game, but it sure was exhilarating. Not sure either team deserved to lose that game, such was the excellence in attack…hats off to the WB’s.

Wow, cracking game, but some of the AB’s have been diabolical…Reid, Aaron Smith, McKenzie, SBW…absolutely awful. Retalick needs to concentrate on rugby not the niggle. Our defense looks as bad as the WB’s were last week. We are only 3 points behind, but not sure if we deserve to be…only the scrum is dominant…and its really really dominant. Nothing else is though.

Yup, he should never have thrown that pass, it was so obvious. Hes got a hole in his game , there

Cards and injuries as a result of contestable kicks have become a serious blight on the game. I can see where eventually they may need to change the rules so kicks over head height wont be able to be contested by the kicking team until caught or hits the ground with a 5m circle enforced. Yes, it reduces the contestability of the game and kick-passes will be no more, but there are injuries/and or cards nearly every single game now due to the clashes of bodies as a result of these kicks.

And they need to nix the ruling that a player jumping for a pass can’t be tackled, that has the ability to be seriously abused. Imagine your scrumhalf floating a high pass to a number 8 charging at the goal line and he jumps to catch it…automatic try under current rules if the defenders don’t tackle him, penalty try if they do and a card.

The Crusaders and the Lions have saved Super Rugby with a super final

Actually, I thought the Baby Black pack destroyed England. They completely dominated the scrums, made huge meters all game with ball in hand, scored nine of the ten tries and their clean-outs at ruck-time were simply exemplary. England had a big pack but apart from the try scored by the flanker, they went nowhere all day.

Australia lose to Scotland in U20's, finish sixth at Rugby World Championship

Well, as far as I am concerned the two matches that have mattered most against the Crusaders and Maori the Lions have completely smothered the opposition. It may not be pretty to watch , but it is pretty effective. Their ‘A’ team is gelling well and getting the job done.

A number of Maori players played the worst game Ive seen them play for a while. TKB, McKenzie, Lowe..sure their forward pack was going backwards but their decision making and execution was awful.

Remains to be seen if Hansen & Co can come up with a game plan to combat the Lions defense, and if Aaron Smith is going to be the halfback I can see the Lions running all day down his channel. I think Dagg is in because of his ability under the high ball, and wouldn’t be surprised to see him float to the other wing on blindside defense just to counter Murray’s kicks.

Lions annihilating the Maori.

Very very good win by the Lions, thoroughly deserved, they looked the most threatening throughout the match.

Crusaders got shut down, and didn’t seem to have too many clues how to counter the Lion’s tactics. Thought Mo’unga played a poor game, his kicking from general play was weak.

Thank goodness that ref is not officiating again in New Zealand, I had no clue what he was doing. The scrums in particular were an absolute shambles.

With the Lion’s showing their hand with their kick tactics, I think Dagg is a shoo-in for starting on one wing.

I am so happy Aussie sides are infatuated with the maul, means their backline play never develops.

Wow, TJP has FORTY TWO tries in Super Rugby, thats incredible

This…x1000.

Whats the bet, that Gibson cannot sack Grey?

Scrap the conference system, everyone play each other once, top eight qualify for finals regardless of where they are situated, no June break for tests period…2nd bye for each team to be staggered over these 3 weeks.

The conference structure is just idiotic, no reason whatsoever to keep it.

Never mind Super 18 or Super 15, how about Super 16?

Go back and watch Canes early tests and the tries he set up, by his running into gaps, offloading, changes of direction etc.

Yeah, he has, but I remember when Cane used to make things happen with the ball. Hes always been a tackling machine, but he also had exceptional ball skills. I understand that the AB’s wanted him to bulk up, but sometimes thats not in a particular players best interests…remember 2007 the infamous training camp that had all the AB’s bulk up, and the disaster that was. Guys like Dan Carter lost their exceptional acceleration and change of direction because they were too bulky. Luckily, they have never done that again.

Reds sucking in the big ones at the end of the half. Last week they faded badly, will their fitness be a problem again?

Been watching Cane, some good hits, some misses. Hes bulked up the last 18 months and I think its affected his agility. Hes not very agile at all now, he used to be pretty agile for a loose forward, allowing him to do things others couldn’t. Doesn’t appear to be there now.

Are you kidding me, that was a cheap shot…he was lucky it was only a yellow. Wouldn’t be surprised if the citing commissioner has a go at Smith for that.

Good game by Blues, no shame in losing to the Canes like that. Canes just had that extra bit of class to take their opportunities.

Blues vs Hurricanes: Super Rugby live scores, blog

Nice try by Canes, they really pounce and finish off any opportunities that come their way.

Blues vs Hurricanes: Super Rugby live scores, blog

Blues have made plenty of breaks and half breaks in the game, just can’t seem to finish them off.

Blues vs Hurricanes: Super Rugby live scores, blog

Well, that try was well deserved, Blues making the play. Cane’s just working off Blues errors.

Blues vs Hurricanes: Super Rugby live scores, blog

Typical Blues, infuriatingly inconsistent. Flashes of brilliance interspersed with moments of stupidity. (kano runs way way too far on a solo run and loses the ball, Ioane passes the ball directly to ‘Canes in a promising position, Luatua immediately pulls down a maul, right in front of the ref..then holds his head for being such a nob.)

Weakest Blues scrum in years…the ‘Canes are bulldozing them!

This articles highlights TJP’s strengths as a defender in most part, something he is far superior at being than Aaron Smith who is regularly steamrolled.

In addition TJP has a good head on his shoulders and doesn’t become rattled, something I have seen Smith do on a number of occasions.

While Smith has the best pass in the world and very high fitness levels, I feel TJP offers more overall, particularly against fierce opposition. Smith would be the ‘finisher’ if I was the coach.

TJ's adventures in the Reds' back garden

A NZ rugby writer quoting some Australian report on sport:-

According to research firm Roy Morgan, active participation in rugby in Australia has dropped to just 55,000 in 2016 − a staggering 63 percent plunge in the last five years.

That makes rugby officially the Lucky Country’s 26th most popular sport, by participation, and on a par with ballroom dancing. You cannot make this stuff up!

Rugby’s freefall in participation levels in Australia now puts it below squash, gymnastics and baseball, and well off the pace of leading team sports such as No1 football (623,000), basketball (438,000), netball (315,000) and AFL (253,000).

Even lawn bowls (233,000), darts (232,0000) and ten-pin bowling (122,000) leave rugby in their shade in Australia, according to the Roy Morgan research.

Now participation levels aren’t the sole judge of a sport’s success, but in this case the huge decline − rugby dropped back from 148,000 active participants in 2011
