Richmond rising is great for football

Great read as always, Cam. I think the best part of the Richmond resurgence is the life that it gives to the bottom half of the 8. To finish 7th or 8th this year, you have to be in genuinely good form given the competition for spots. If Richmond were to make it, I don’t think anyone doubts that they could be at least competitive against Port. And if they didn’t, no-one will complain about a first week Showdown. Add North vs Essendon (roof footy sans roof!) and any mix of the top 4 and the best pure footy week of the season hits delirious heights. Cannot wait.

Funny you say that, he’s the exact person I was going to compare him to. All the talent in the world doesn’t mean much if you don’t have it upstairs.

Will Higgins live up to his potential at another club?

Does anyone really believe aim was to coldcock him from behind? It seems pretty blatant to me that Cox threw an elbow to assert his dominance, Vickery watched the ball and tried to assert his back with an open palm but Cox dipped down (which Vickery didn’t see) and caught it in the face. Which is not to say he didn’t have intent to hurt him, but not to knock him out. He was punished as if he had the intent to strike him high and that is fair. I think we can ease up on the ‘coward’ calls.

And while I’m at it, does every player have to apologise for every transgression on the football field? Last I checked, it’s a pretty primal game we follow. They’re bound to overstep at times and we can watch them do that without having a referendum on their character . Apologising to his family, while most likely PR-driven, seemed pretty excessive.

Vickery hard and tough? Try stupid

I swear that Higgins has cruised in his career off purported Supercoach value and kicking two goals on Darren Milburn in the first quarter of the ’08 Prelim. He’s certainly been interrupted by injuries but he’s 26 and hasn’t delivered on the potential he came in with. Both the Bulldogs and Higgins should part ways. He needs a change of scenery and the Bulldogs need to move on from the idea that he’ll be a vital cog for them (if they haven’t already).

That midfield without Ablett is not even close to the best midfield in the competition. It’s his mere presence that elevates the rest of them to another level. This is the same midfield that couldn’t get their hands on the ball against Brisbane on the weekend. And if I had my pick of any midfield in the competition, I wouldn’t start with Fremantle but that’s an argument for another day.

Gold Coast minus Gary Ablett equals GWS
