I think this is a downgrade all round. It’s an clear loser for anyone who watches AB/Boks EOY tests or any northern hemisphere rugby as now you have to get two subscriptions. In terms of exposure the FTA game is a win but it is only one game, otherwise do you think you’ll get more crossover viewers via the paid add on Stan Sport with its tennis and whatever else versus all the other high profile sports Foxtel covers?

I completely agree with you, the Brumbies have been demonstrating a winning gameplan for years and it has been ignored. But it is now too late, RA chose Rennie over Jake White – remember that Jake offered his services late last year and was passed over. Rennie coached a running game with Glasgow in the Pro 14, RA knew what they were getting and it is what they wanted. I believe RA would rather lose playing running rugby than win playing a forwards based game.

You need to have penalties if you want a contested scrum. Why would the defending team bother to compete if there is no risk of a penalty? Just have the front row collapse it as soon as the ref calls set, with the loose forwards binding on by a finger ready to run out and mark the backs/no8. You need penalties if you want contested scrums, if you don’t want contested scrums then good news, rugby league already exists.
Early observations from Super Rugby AU’s law variations
Awarding the scrum to France after Faf passed the ball into the French player. I went back and rewatched it and the player was there because he had cleared out Etzebeth past the ruck and then gone on with it, and wasn’t lying flat to avoid the ball. Most refs would have given the offside penalty to SA and warned not to milk it again. I’ve seen a handful of refs in the past call a scrum and give it to the team that was in possession and again warned not to milk. Giving a scrum to France for a turnover caused by an offside player was unprecedented for me.
