Will the media in this country ever talk about the real problem with these collision sports? Subconcussion, or subconcussive head impacts, are head traumas that do not cause immediate symptoms. However, they may cause long-term effects, such as memory problems and depression. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source define subconcussive head impacts as impacts to the head that cause sudden brain movement without neurological symptoms. Such impacts may include bumps, jolts, or blows. Clashes of heads while playing sports may cause subconcussive head impacts. Scientists remain uncertain about the best response to subconcussive impacts.

COMMENT: Angus Brayshaw's retirement isn't Brayden Maynard's fault - it's the AFL's

We lost narrowly in the QF to one of the pre tournament favourites. You just have pacific holiday resorts to beat in your Final. Now tell us why the Matilda’s get 11 million mega TV ratings and the NRL, AFL and SOI can only get a paltry 3 million?

Manu tells Roosters he's leaving for lucrative rugby deal - but club lock down replacement

Well I was actually interested to find out how much NRL clubs are making. Didn’t some French Rugby club have to pay a transfer fee when a NRL player went there a few years ago? The NRL were threatening legal action because he was under contract from memory. So are these NRL players leaving not under contract?

The A-League gets bigger crowds than Superleague despite the UK having 3 times our population. Is Rugby League a ‘joke’ sport in the country that invented League?
A-League players are in demand from clubs around the world and you’ll soon here about them when they turn out for the Socceroos. Rugby League players not so much. The few just walk away and you don’t seem to get any money for them.

Here’s a couple of news articles.
“In fact KEEPUP understands that Tilio’s switch, for more than $2m, took the revenue for A-League Men clubs from overseas sales in this window past $7m – with hopes it could yet get closer to $10m – giving clubs further incentive to invest in a supply line of talent.”

“Adelaide United have sold star goalkeeper Joe Gauci to Aston Villa in the Premier League for an undisclosed fee. He follows in footsteps of 17-year-old sensation Nestory Irankunda, who will join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich at the end of the season. Alexandar Popovic (Gwangju FC), Steven Hall (Brighton and Hove Albion), Awer Mabil (Midtjylland), Mohamed Toure (Reims) and Yaya Dukuly (Reins), Riley McGree (Club Brugge) and Mathew Leckie (Borussia Monchengladbach) are among the players to have come through the Reds and transferred overseas.”

Ha, Ha, Ha. A few Indian expats watch it? Cricket fans in Australia have no interest in watching it and neither does the world. Everyone outside clueless Australia knows who the world’s top sportsmen are. They’re global superstars, household names around the world and earn a $100m plus per season. You won’t find any Cricketers, Rugby or NFL players in that list. They come from Soccer, Basketball and elite individual sports.

Tradition trumps dollars: Australia will never embrace T20 cricket like Tests despite 'poor cousin' raking in big bucks

My local A-League club is literally making millions and millions of dollars by selling young talent to rich overseas clubs. How much money do NRL clubs make from these players?

Manu tells Roosters he's leaving for lucrative rugby deal - but club lock down replacement

Yes, being a sporting backwater that can’t get half it’s own country to watch and has to give away it’s overseas TV rights for FREE is the height of sporting excellence.

My point was that ‘richness’ whether it’s revenue or Oil Sheiks doesn’t equate to ‘bigness’. If nobody outside your country is watching these leagues then they’re not the world’s biggest leagues. Popularity, value of overseas TV rights and global ratings determine how big you are.

Tradition trumps dollars: Australia will never embrace T20 cricket like Tests despite 'poor cousin' raking in big bucks

The Saudi Pro League is the ‘richest’ league in the world. They recently dangled a Billion dollars in front of Kylian Mbappe to play there for just one year. Richness doesn’t translate to bigness. No one outside Nth America watches the NFL. No one outside India watches the IPL. The world is watching the EPL, Champions League and America’s NBA. The average salary in the NFL is $750k per season. Average salary in the EPL is $180K PER WEEK. IPL players get paid a pittance compared to Soccer or Basketball players.

‘The difference was that back then neither NRL o AFL had made any significant ground in each others backyards.’
You’ll be lucky to find an AFL fan that knows there are two Rugby codes let alone watches any of them. The Storm get TV ratings of 5K in Melbourne. Have you seen the actual TV ratings for AFL in Sydney and Brisbane? That’s just for the home teams. If you show two interstate teams in those markets you’ll get SBS ratings which haven’t changed since the 1980’s. I read a couple of years ago that the AFL had lost over 200m keeping these northern clubs afloat including 75m on GWS alone. They are still struggling to make any significant ground in those markets.

Parochialism and denial runs rampant as Australia's rugby states are hunted by debt, one by one

The only solution is to get rid of the collisions and become a skills based sport with a much safer form of tackling. I grew up in an AFL backwater but started watching Rugby in the 80’s because of ‘magical’ players like Campese. Those magical players seemed to disappear when the sport went professional and everyone ‘baulked up’. The more top heavy you are as an athlete the less flexible, agile and skilful you are.

The Wrap: Concussion is a key area where Australian rugby can become a leader, not a follower

There’s an interesting interview on TalkSport regarding this issue.
“I REGRET PLAYING RUGBY!” ???? Steve Thompson shares the impact Dementia has had on his life.

According to Steve Thompson many Rugby players in the UK are giving up the sport in their 20’s.
The future of collision sports looks bleak. Fewer and fewer Americans are letting their children play American Football. The AFL and NRL are just pretending concussion is the only problem and you can fix it. No you can’t.

The Wrap: Concussion is a key area where Australian rugby can become a leader, not a follower

The A League gets bigger crowds than SuperLeague even though the UK has 3 times our population. So is Rugby League a joke sport in the country that invented Rugby League? The BBL had to drastically reduce it’s season due to boredom. It’s not a ‘league’ just a mini tournament. Cricket doesn’t have a 6 month domestic competition that attracts big crowds does it? Obviously the national teams are the primary focus for sports like Cricket and Football.

Windies' dynasty decline a cautionary tale for Australian selectors with major transition period looming

Name a cricketer who is a global superstar, household name around the world and earns a 100 million a year? Like Messi, LeBron, Mbappe?

Windies' dynasty decline a cautionary tale for Australian selectors with major transition period looming

We’re discussing national teams and international sport. Try and keep up. The Matilda’s broke all TV ratings records with their mega 11 million TV ratings. How come we didn’t see that when our men won the recent cricket world cup? Australians take winning in cricket for granted because there’s hardly anyone to compete against.

Windies' dynasty decline a cautionary tale for Australian selectors with major transition period looming

How do you think we’ll go at the Olympics this year?

Windies' dynasty decline a cautionary tale for Australian selectors with major transition period looming

I wouldn’t worry too much Paul. Cricket is a commonwealth sport with only a tiny number of ex empire nations to compete against. It’s not like the Matilda’s where you have to compete against all the world’s top countries including the US. Former top cricket nations aren’t that good anymore and there are no new teams coming through. None from outside the commonwealth. Our men and women will be near the top for ever.

Windies' dynasty decline a cautionary tale for Australian selectors with major transition period looming

Do you expect to see any of these new nations touring Australia in your lifetime? Cricket is a tiny, minority, amateur sport in those countries. Most ‘Irish’ cricketers are Englishmen with Irish grandmothers. The captain of Holland is a South African. We have a Ice Hockey league in Australia too. Do you think we’ll become a Ice Hockey nation anytime soon?

It's not un-Australian to cheer against Australia - in fact, in our favourite sports, it is the best option

Cricket is a commonwealth sport, not a global sport. With only a handful of commonwealth nations to compete against our men’s and women’s team will always be near the top. That’s why cricket is such a limited sport. Rather than expand outside the commonwealth it seems to be getting smaller if anything. That’s because Australia, England and India monopolise most of the revenue rather than invest in growing the game.

It's not un-Australian to cheer against Australia - in fact, in our favourite sports, it is the best option

Basketball, Rugby, Ice Hockey, Handball, Cycling, Winter Sports etc are popular, professional sports in ‘soccer only’ Europe. Try and find an AFL fan that knows there are 2 Rugby codes let alone watches any of them. Have you seen the actual TV ratings for AFL in Sydney and Brisbane? If you want an example of a dumb sporting mono culture then we have 2 of them right here in Australia.

It's not un-Australian to cheer against Australia - in fact, in our favourite sports, it is the best option

Such a great watch that Australian Cricket fans have absolutely no interest in watching it? Just like they aren’t interested in watching the IPL.

West Indies playing for their future as a legitimate Test nation with memory fading of long lost Calypso glory days

Australians are only interested in watching England and India. The world’s ‘2nd biggest sport’ just can’t find any decent countries to play against. I’m still waiting for a country from outside the old British Empire to take up Cricket.

West Indies playing for their future as a legitimate Test nation with memory fading of long lost Calypso glory days

I remember idiot Cricket fans arguing at the time that this was just a part of professional sport. Like Football players who pretend to be injured or NRL players who hold down players longer than the rules allow. No it wasn’t. This was pre-planned, premeditated cheating. not something that happens in the ‘heat of battle’. It was a complete stain on our sporting reputation. The fact that these players were not banned for life is another stain on our sporting reputation.

The brotherhood: Why Warner will be forever silent about Sandpapergate

Did you know that some of the biggest TV ratings for the EPL and World Cup come from India. No kidding, just ask the EPL and FIFA how much money they make from selling their TV rights to India. Whatever you do, DO NOT ask Rugby, League or AFL how much money they make.
