From an article on ‘sportslawyer.com.au’, (full read here: http://www.sportslawyer.com.au/the-knock-out-blow-how-australia-is-tackling-concussion-neck-injuries/). I’m no lawyer, just thought I’d share what I’ve found on the subject so far:

‘McCracken subsequently brought negligence proceedings against the two players and Melbourne Storm.(11) During that case, the court heard distressing evidence from a former player on the ordinary types of coaching instructions given to players:
“Players at elite levels of Rugby League… are personally taught and encouraged by their coaches and trainers to make significant impact at the initial collision stage of a tackle. They are also taught… to put [the opposition player] on the ground forcibly to cause hard bruising and impact with the ground which will hurt and discourage the attacker…” (12)
In that case the court found that the actions of the Melbourne Storm players were unreasonably dangerous and went beyond what was taught (my bold). Melbourne Storm was found vicariously liable for their conduct and ordered to pay compensation.’

I’d say this case is going to get a LOT of attention, as it would appear there could well be a precedent here(??). I think we’ll be talking/arguing about it for a fair while. If any one is interested, there’s another pretty good read on the subject here:

Legal action opens 'can of worms': Gallen

The ‘Can of Worms’ has been open since the Rogers v Bugden case way back in the 90’s.

Legal action opens 'can of worms': Gallen

Great feel good article, thanks Robert, you’ve just made my day 🙂

Rugby league's African explosion

Sorry, that’s probably a bit off-topic for this conversation.

The corporatisation of sport is out of control

The only ‘corporatisation’ that really concerns me is probably better defined as the ‘gamblification’ of sport, especially in regards to it’s impact on youngsters. Trying to explain betting on a footy game to a couple of 9yo’s was NOT a parenting skill I envisioned having to acquire, but you’re bombarded at every break in telecast, (usually after the excitement of a goal) with ads from multitudinous betting agencies, or in the case of AFL our ‘Official Wagering Partner’ (I mean, seriously??!!).

I have nothing against people who want to have a punt, I dare say it would be considered un-Australian to even THINK that, and I’m OK with explaining to my kids what betting/gambling is, however, when it’s quite literally shoved down their throats and made to look like it’s as much fun as playing the game/adds to the excitement of the game, THAT really gets my goat! We don’t allow tobacco advertising/sponsorship any more do we?

On the subject of jerseys/caps etc, my kids would lose theirs at least 4 times a season, until we drew a line in the sand and told them if they lost it, they’d have to wait till next season for a new one, or use their own saved up pocket $. Youngest still has his Swans cap from 2014 now lol!!

Spot on Rellum, especially that last comment. I have been banned from helping my 9yo with his batting from now on, because he said his coach told him he was doing it all wrong, i.e. all the basics I was taught. I watch him now, and if he tucked his pants into long socks and was allowed to swap his helmet for his b/ball cap, I swear you’d hear the umpire call ‘Batter Up’, and you’d start looking for the nearest hot-dog stand.

BAHAHAHA!!! Best thing I’ve read here in weeks!!! BRILLIANT!! Thanks Frank Frank

Why Michael Cheika is the worst thing that happened ever

I’m not sure I can take any more of this…… the club I have followed since I was allowed to stay up late as a kid and watch the Escort Cup, has put itself, it’s players and it’s members/fans through 2 years of hell……..like most Bombers fans, I took what joy I could from the team that performed as well as could have been expected this year, and delighted in the discovery of some great young kids who performed above and beyond…..all the while copping the often vitriolic abuse from other teams supporters (and hey, just FYI, I didn’t participate in a supplements scheme). I have never made any excuse/defended what appears to have been a totally morally corrupt and cynical exercise by ALL parties concerned…..and will have to live with my team being pretty much forever remembered as the White Sox of AFL……and now this a*hole is dragging us through the muck all over again???…..ENOUGH!! Please??

Greg Chappell???!!! Seriously??? After what he’s done to State Cricket in this this country?? W..T..F???? That’s it….I’m switching to that game they play on ice with broomsticks and kettles!

Cricket Australia got their new selection panel half right

I never doubted for a moment that this would be his decision, which I applaud. As you say Josh, the haters will still be there, (and seriously, just give it a rest and let’s move on FFS!!) Sam Mitchell worthy of a Brownlow?? Yep, and I’m NOT a Hawks fan.

Good call, Jobe - handing back the Brownlow was the only sensible thing to do

Ahhh….Who’s on first???
