Disappointing to not get our man, but best of luck to him at the Roosters. We will still have a great side next year and more opportunities will come up over the coming months as rosters evolve and coaches move.

NRL News: Fifita picks his new club after dropping Titans bombshell, clubs warned whingeing players will be binned

Also remember the salary cap is not there to spread talent, but to stop clubs overspending.

Panthers' plea for player development discounts will fall on deaf ears - and Fifita is not the answer to their JFH dilemma

It’s no coincidence that Penrith have raised this in the week they are trying to sign a forward for $150k less than he is being paid at his current club.

Panthers' plea for player development discounts will fall on deaf ears - and Fifita is not the answer to their JFH dilemma

I imagine he would need to take a big pay cut and a shorter contract to come to Penrith. As others have said, we have let other players go by not offering big money or long contracts. But it could be valuable to him to spend a few years with us and then cash in on a big contract next time.

If he does go for a shorter or lesser contract with us then the salary cap auditor is likely to want to take a look. I think it would be hard for them to accept anything that looks like the Panthers getting a bargain.

Or he could just go to the Roosters.

NRL News: Ivan clearly impressed with 'marquee' Fifita, 'I've done nothing wrong - Gus calls in lawyer over fine

I think Geyer playing centres in NSW Cup is about improving his versatility and making him more valuable to the FG bench; he can take Garner’s spot on the bench as the forward who can also play in the backs at a pinch.

Nathan's kicks the difference in Panthers rearguard action as Ivan reveals reason for Turuva absence

Good point; cover for Tom is important.

However, lucky for Tom, his injury concerns are generally lower limb rather than head knock related so Best might not help.

Blues Origin predicted team: Huge blow for NSW and Bunnies with Murray out long term

I’m amazed that people still talk about Bennett as such a mythical creature. Most of his success has been in the initial years of Brisbane when they were given the sweetest of saloon passages to success; in the last 20 years he has won a single premiership. He did well with an underdog QLD team, but so did Fatty and getting a team up for 3 games is different to building a great club and culture. I do admit he is doing well with the Dolphins, but I have concerns about how sustainable that is, and he couldn’t get a very talented Souths side across the line.

Paradox of parity: NRL craves a level playing field but fans love to hate a dynasty like Penrith’s undisputed reign

Yes; very.

Most of our salary cap related losses over recent times have been promoted from within; I think making a statement in the front row (assuming it doesn’t mean we risk losing others) would be great.

I would assume that, after how we have been demonstrably playing by the rules around the salary cap and the magnanimous way we handled Fish leaving, few (outside Tigers fans) would begrudge us buying a player if his mutual option was not taken up by both parties.

Blues Origin predicted team: Huge blow for NSW and Bunnies with Murray out long term

I think the 10 year figure is a belies the reality. It has been really 6 years of dominance of Roosters and Melbourne (Penrith were middling at best during that period) and the 4 years of Penrith.

Thanks Don; that is exactly what I meant (apologies if it was written in a clumsy way).

I like the idea of Paps off the bench or 18th man.

Blues Origin predicted team: Huge blow for NSW and Bunnies with Murray out long term

You get his 150m and 98% tackle efficiency.

Also, you get to play both him and Murray through the middle in the same team; I think it would be amazing to see Yeo taking the ball to the line with Murray on his shoulder.

Teddy has run his race at fullback; time for someone else. I would go for Edwards, or if not Edwards, Turbo. In an experienced spine Bula might even be a shout.
I would have Moses at 6 if he has proven fitness. If not, Hynes.
Up front we look slow and weak; Paulo has been rubbish for Parra. I would prefer Yeo in the front row. That would allow Murray to 13 and bring in Chrichton. Kenny in the starting side and Api to the bench to replace Cameron M.
I want Penrith to have a go at signing big Stafano so he can’t play Origin this year; I would replace him with RCG. I like Nicho on the bench, but if people are going to complain that he can’t play centre if needed then he will need to be replaced. If that is the case maybe bring Best into the starting side, move Critta to the beach and move Nicho to 18. There is zero reason to have Best at 18.

Maybe he is winning because he has his team focused on the game at hand, rather than giving them excuses like focusing on the ref’s calls.

NRL Round 7 Talking Points: With big wins come big losses, and which coach is the game’s biggest sook?

Great news for Fish; I take it at face value that this is for personal reasons. He is a Penrith legend and a winner so congrats to the Warriors for getting a good one.

Disappointing to lose a great player but it is the cost of being successful. I hope we have a nibble at Stefano (assuming his and the Tiger’s performances don’t trigger the MO); I appreciate the sentiments below that this would not be in the best interests of the game overall, but that is not how sport works. Every team needs to try to win (either long term or short term), so if that is how Penrith best think they can achieve success, they should do it. And I feel that Penrith have accrued enough ‘brownie points’ for respecting the cap that most reasonable fans wouldn’t begrudge them if they did make a big signing now.

Having said all that, I personably don’t see it myself; I think Fish’s cash goes to Smith, Henry and maybe a player in the $300-500k range.

The Fish that broke the Panthers’ back: Dynasty in danger with JFH the biggest blow in long list of star departures

I can see Parra fans cheering this one; Iro goes to the eels and the Roosters can have Morgan Harper…

CONFIRMED: NRL superstar joins ex-All Blacks coaching greats in Japan - could he do an SBW?

Agree; he has little to worry about with the spear tackle.

'I don't know what goes through Latrell's mind': Mitchell on report twice as Wahs dominate sorry Souths

I am not sure if it is a conspiracy, but my first reaction to reading the story above was the Reynolds’ reactions did not scream to me this is an injury that will only have him missing Rd 6-7 fixtures against the Fins and Raiders.

NRL News: Ilias carried off in reggies with Warrior sent off, Best possible news for Reyno despite hamstring issue

The other factor is showing how close Gee got to where the ball was planted and he loafed across the field. Edwards was travelling a lot faster (he had made up about 5 metres on Gee in the moments leading up to the collision).

The issue is that you need to fall over; because if you don’t, you don’t get the penalty. In the Manu no try, Luai was obstructed (lead runner hit outside shoulder) and he was the defender one in from the man (may) marking Manu. But instead of falling, Luai stayed on his feet but had to go around the player obstructing, meaning he was behind the play and couldn’t slide. This isolated May with Manu, and Manu was good enough to get past May one-on-one. But if Luai falls over, it is a penalty every time.

Obstruction turning a 'simple' game into complicated mess of decoys and defenders milking penalties

I think the proximity of the referee to the play when Manu gets the ball down versus how much ground Edwards made on him in the few moments before the collision also demonstrates that Edwards had a better than even chance of getting involved in the play.

And I didn’t think Martin did hit Keary (and if he did, it was on the outside shoulder).

More kicking duels please!!!

NRL News: DCE back 'trick plays' to take down Panthers, 'No ceiling' as Tigers announce bold vision

Somehow it will be Gus’ fault. He won’t come out and say it straight, because he is a coward, but he will heavily hint at it.

Knights already at sixes and sevens again: What exactly was the rush to re-sign O’Brien long term?

Is 800k the new 600k given the new salary cap? Seem to be more 1m players than ever before and lots seemingly getting paid ‘overs’.

Maybe an article here Mike; given where the cap is now, and what you need to pay the bottom third of your roster, what does that mean for what you can pay the top third?

Dragons finally letting Lomax leave - and his exit might start a feeding frenzy across the NRL

Turuva is off contract at the end of the year so if he goes Panthers can’t do anything about it. But if your point is the Panthers wouldn’t offer Lomax 800k if they can’t afford to keep Turuva I completely agree.

In the time that Ivan has been in the league (or Bellamy for that matter) Bennet has ‘only’ won two premierships (including one the first year Ivan coached). This is despite Wayne having his pick of the litter in terms of teams he goes too.

Ivan the terribly consistent over-achiever vaults into greatest coaches debate by habitually exceeding expectations
