That would be brilliant, the referees getting quizzed about the coaches at a press conference! “I need to be careful what I say here, but where is the consistency in Robinson’s assessment of high tackles…?”

Young send-off 'over the top', Radley sin-bin 'ridiculous' says Robbo as Roosters reduced to 11 on nightmare night

I totally agree. Ultimately, most decisions in league are a matter of opinion. Personally, I didn’t think it was impossible that Edwards could have run across and prevented that try, so I could understand the video ref’s decision. Annesley saying that the decision was wrong – if that’s what he did say – is like saying that his opinion is the only one that matters.

NRL Round 4 Talking Points: A month is done - let’s make some hard calls

Belmore should be heaving. I have some great memories of sitting with my Dad on the grass watching the brilliant Ewan McGrady. I hope it’s a good game. Go Dogs!

Cleary's immortal display inspires Panthers to pull off record comeback win for three-peat and break Broncos hearts

Yes I thought the NSW forwards dominated QLD. It was a strange game. They say that big games are won in the forwards and won by defence, but Origin 1 was lost by NSW’s poor attack and won by QLD’s backs. NSW had plenty of territory and possession but just didn’t play any footy. Teddy reminded me of Paul Gallen back in the day – just hog the ball and make sure noone creative gets it.

Chivas, that’s an interesting question about the animosity between league and union in Aus. I played union as a kid in Sydney but always followed league (and the wallabies). Both are wonderful games, although I do feel that union was better in the Campese era than today. But what has always put me off union is the classist attitudes of many union people – I have often heard private school union types disrespecting league with their general attitude being that the game is played by thugs and people of low intellect and is somehow in itself intellectually inferior to union. This attitude is so ridiculous it is almost beyond belief. But anyway, it is this attitude, combined with the slow pace and stoppages of union and the scoring system that favours penalty goals over tries (at least compared to league), that means I don’t watch union much except wallabies games and the world cup.

Has anyone ever had a better season for a last-placed team than Burton with the Dogs?

The Falls Guy: Debutant stars as second-string Panthers cruise by Bulldogs

I hope Barrett doesn’t seriously believe that dropped ball was the problem last night. If they’d completed at 100% they would have still been awful. Poor handling was just one symptom of the deeper problem: a team without belief, a team without energy, a team without a plan.
I don’t buy that their roster’s not up to first grade standard. Look at what the Storm have done with players like Reimis Smith; look what they’ve done with Jahrome Hughes. Naden looked pretty good at the Panthers; he plays like a reserve grader at the Dogs. I think a stronger club could win a lot of games with the roster the Dogs have.
I can’t say that Barrett’s doing a great job, but I’m not sure sacking him is the answer. The Dogs were lousy at the end of Hasler’s tenure, lousy under Pay, and now lousy under Barrett. Sure, their roster has improved this year, but not in the spine (apart from the magnificent Burton). Maybe the club has deeper issues.

Knight snap seven-game losing streak as Barrett admits Bulldogs need a shake-up

It would be a really simple exercise for Annesley to back up his comments with some data.

If the reason that lower-ranked teams are penalised more is only because they spend more time defending, then the ratio of tackles made per penalty/6-again conceded would be the same for all teams, regardless of whether they are high- or low-ranked.

The fact that Annesley hasn’t even bothered to get that data shows how cursory the scrutiny of refereeing is.

NRL NEWS: Annesley angry over bias claims, Keary wowed by Walker, Anasta blames Storm for Munster dramas

Great article Tim. I love the suggestion that there should be an independent body that evaluates the performance of the referees – the current reviews by the NRL seem to be mainly box-ticking, only looking at whether the penalties/6-again calls that were awarded were justified or not, and not looking at whether maybe other penalties/6-again calls should have been awarded.
Commiserations on losing your father, I feel for you. He did a great thing in founding Questacon. I have some family friends visiting Aus from the UK at the moment, and their young boys loved Questacon so much that they asked if they could spend their whole 3-week holiday in Canberra.

Seven talking points from NRL Round 12

Nothing special about the Dogs except that they are the greatest club in the universe, ever.

Are the Dogs now the elephant in the room?

And Damien Cook. And Corey Thomson.

Are the Dogs now the elephant in the room?

I agree TB – their attack hasn’t been great but it was their lack of character in defence that I found really depressing (until the Sharks game).

Are the Dogs now the elephant in the room?

I have liked Flanagan ever since seeing him pot a high-pressure sideline conversion for the Roosters when the match was on the line against the Storm. (I loved Kerrod Holland for doing the same thing for the Doggies in his first ever game). I reckon he’ll come good.

Are the Dogs now the elephant in the room?

Yes, the Dogs continue to be much less than the sum of their parts. Their team is stacked with (ex-) representative players. If they play to their potential they can mix it with most teams – as they showed in the first fifteen minutes against Cronulla.

Their main problems are mental – they seem to go into games not really believing that they can win, and when they attack with the ball I get the feeling that they don’t really believe they are going to score.

Hopefully hanging on for that win against the Sharks will give them a bit of self-belief and they can start to turn things around.

Are the Dogs now the elephant in the room?

Letting go of Damien Cook in favour of Michael Lichaa has to be one of the worst roster management decisions ever made by any club

Are the Dogs now the elephant in the room?

Go you beautiful Bulldogs! When that game ended I found myself on the loungeroom floor doing The Worm – or trying to do The Worm.

Agree about Napa. When he came to the Dogs he sort of turned into Aiden Tolman.
