So what you’re saying is that if I send my third string No. 8 out to take the head off the opposition star fly half, I can then put my first choice No. 8 on the field in 15 minutes, while the opposition is down their first choice fly half?

It's time to revamp the rugby red card ruling

I’ll stick up for the ref here.

There was an IRB directive sent out in 2009 to try and stamp out spear tackles in rugby. The directive said that if you drove or dropped a player, and the player landed on his head, neck or shoulders, then it was a straight red. The only way you should get away with missing a red is if you attempted to bring the ball carrier down safely.

Too many referees took the soft option, choosing to ignore the directive, in favour of a softly-softly approach. But spear tackles still happened. Even a law change in 2011 (removing the requirement for the neck, head or shoulders to hit the ground first, to avoid missing penalties due to the ball carrier using his arm to brace) didn’t have the required affect.

In the end, Warburton lifted the player up, dropped him, and the French player landed on his head. Red card was issued.

Now, it’s a case, if they can do it in the RWC semi final, then they can do it in any game.

Once again the “the game is professional, time to do away with the red card” comes out after a player receives a red card. Yet again, no evidence is provided, and no thought to the consequences of a rule change this monumental is given.

Comparing American football (which has unlimited interchange) and basketball (which has unlimited interchange) with rugby (which has permanent replacement) is ridiculous. Comparing rugby to baseball is as laughable as comparing it to cricket.

The fact is a red card (and yellow card) are used as an ultimate deterrent to stop players breaking the top end laws. The same laws are used in rugby league and hockey, and the red card it used in soccer. It stops teams throwing a D-grade thug onto the field to take out the opposition star player, knowing full well that their team will not be penalised other than a penalty.

You will see not a better game, but a worse one, as the consequences of actions go unpunished on the field.

The funding for the ARU’s Smart Rugby program comes directly from insurance premiums paid by clubs. So clubs are directly financing a WHS program that should be paid for by the ARU.

If you ask anyone who claims on the Gow Gates policy, they will tell you that they definitely underpay.

Spot on. Given that there is no longer coverage of the Shute Shield, there are now less than 15 games of rugby on FTA – and at least 6 of those are in the middle of the night.

Here are a list of sports that have greater FTA coverage in Australia:
– Cricket (all domestic tests, ODI, T20I; DOD and BBL)
– RL (3 matches per week, finals, SOO and tests)
– AFL (4 matches per week, finals)
– Basketball (2 matches per week, finals)
– Netball (1 match per week, finals)
– Football (1 match per week, finals and internationals on delay)
– Cycling (At least 3 grand tours – all stages, world championships)
– Motor Racing (All rounds of F1, MotoGP, most rounds of V8’s)
– Gridiron (3 matches per round, finals)
– Gaelic Sports (45 matches per year)

Rugby doesn’t even make the top 10.
