The A-League needs to hold on to its best players

We have a salary cap Alexander, a salary cap whereby the Sheikh can only overspend on 1 foreign Marquee and 1 Australian Marquee player.

Unless of course he wants to buy the whole A-League from the FFA and change the rules.

The A-League needs to hold on to its best players

Selling good young players is part of the A-League club’s revenue streams.

Football is an international game, A-League is broadcast in over 60 countries to 250 million people. Just a matter of time before they are noticed and offered more money to play overseas.

Most of these good young players were club juniors who cost virtually nothing to sign up and then the club can sell them for 500,000 or more. If you buy a big name marquee in their twilight years, you’re not going to make any profit on them.

Its solo violin in terms of participation rates and international reach – 250 million people around the world now watch the A-League and football is the most popular sport to play.

Ben Halloran is a striker, but he is used as an attacking midfielder by his German Club because they have a glut of strikers. He’s scored 7 goals in 18 games which is not a bad goal scoring ratio in 2.Bundesliga and so AP is interested in him because he has more options.

Yes and I’ll bet the AFL mad media did everything to help publicise it – I think NOT.

I know you are lying and full of BS when you say a Sun Herald journalist didn’t like AFL.
Mate, that’s the first thing they ask you at the job interview and if you answer no, you’ve got no chance to get the job there as a journalist.

Those sheilas, wogs and poofters are at it again eh maaaaaate.
If they don’t like AFL they can p!ss off back to where they came from maaaaaate!

Heskey was one of the highest paid strikers in Europe and did very well in club football. He is in fact on the all time EPL Scorers Roll of Honour.

The problem was his English managers who used him as a battering ram to intimidate defenders and hold up the ball so the others like Golden Bollocks could score.

Does Emile Heskey deserve the crap he gets?

Nah – just my observations.
Indeed Good Sir, I can make no claims as to being an expert on racism.

Mister Football you are making up some weird user names these days – gonad the ballbearing??? WTF.

Does Emile Heskey deserve the crap he gets?

Are there 2 different Adams posting here, you [adam] said in the article that “Emile Heskey in his prime was a great player and doesn’t deserve … the criticism that has come his way”

Or is the author another Adam?
How can that be?

Does Emile Heskey deserve the crap he gets?

Heskey did very well in the league and is in fact on the all time EPL Scorers Roll of Honour.

With Roy Hodgson still in charge it will be more of the same.
No Tika Taka, no complicated tactics, just good old British courage mate.

Does Emile Heskey deserve the crap he gets?

I must say football is getting a great run in the media these days.

However, its the minority unfortunately, the vast majority of journalists and “media personalities” from the southern states are hopelessly AFL biased.

I have friends and family in Melbourne and Perth and they are absolutely disgusted by the AFL saturation and bias on the TV, Radio and Newspapers. Some of them don’t follow any sport and they still get upset about it..

With another WC coming and most of the world following it, you must get some band wagoners and the Footy Show boys will be putting in for another free trip to the WC finals in Brazil.

Just wait till we cop a pasting in one of the games, to hear what they really think of us.

I got a new heater too . . . and a new coffee table – I smashed my fist through it after THAT GAME, seeing THAT PENALTY and Italy progressing at our expense, to then go on and win it.

How luongo must he wait, Angela?

World Cup wasn't in Luongo's plans

Well put together Steven and a good read.

Spain will make it through the first round, but I predict they will get eliminated in the Ro16, where they will face a South American team, possibly Brazil or Argentina depending on whether they finish 1 or 2.

Save your money on Spain and put it on Argentina instead, Messi and the boys are set for a huge tournament and won’t have to face Brazil till the final, if Brazil make it.

Could Spain do the unthinkable?

Not sure what “crap” you are talking about Adam.

In my travels I’ve found Emile to be well liked and respected by just about everyone, except maybe extremist bigots and racists and the English Press.

But the English Press will savage anyone in an England Jersey if they aren’t winning, especially the centre forward. And as far as racism goes, I think he’s had a pretty good run, compared to some of the other targets.

I believe he’s had a fantastic time in Australia, loves us and is keen to stay on in some capacity if he can. I know someone who’s 2 boys play for a local Newcastle Junior Football Club and when the Jets visited for a clinic, Heskey was the most popular player and gave them lots of encouragement and signed the most autographs. Very popular and well respected.

Oar can be your best or your worst player on any given day.

Will be interested to see if AP uses him or not or if he’s one of the ones left behind.
AP likes to play a bit tighter and use the fullbacks and mids as his attacking weapons.
“defence starts with attack”
“the whole team is attacking and defending, just depends on who has the ball”

I wonder if he’ll try and make more defensive use of him and try and turn him into another Carney?

Oar in better place to make final squad

“A-League players don’t cut it overseas.”

Ok so we are ignoring Jedinak, Halloran, Troisi, Langerak, Kruse, Ruka, Vidosic, Leckie, Sarota, Holland, Zullo, and Mat Ryan (Belgian Goalkeeper of the Year) and many more.

But apart from all those players [he says Monty Pythonesque with tongue firmly in cheek] A-League players have not made it overseas.

Elmer Fudd ist Unser Leben, Was gibst Dok???

Ja, sehr komisch! 🙂

There’s no real evidence to support that and I can’t think of a game where we’ve lost because we were too tired.

In fact, the WSW v Hiroshima game they finished all over them and scored the 2 goals in the last 15 minutes. Even in the first leg when they had to play 2 days after an extra time grand final and after 27 hours of travel, they still held their own against them.

Australia has some of the best fitness and conditioning coaches in the world and they are employed all over the world in all the big leagues including Tottenham, Liverpool, Roma, Urawa, etc.

That’s just SBS and Fox A-League. He is conveniently leaving out the Socceroos and online/internet and international pay TV media deals in his FFA figures to make it look worse and suit his argument.

Since the signing up of a couple of other Asian Pay TV networks since then, the annual figure is actually well over the 40M mark, probably closer to 50M now.

Masters is a long-in-the-tooth Devil’s advocate from way back who likes to gloat about NRL and their billion dollar deal, which Channel 9 is losing millions on by the way.

He conveniently leaves out the Socceroos and online/internet and international pay TV media deals in his FFA figures to make it look worse. Since the signing up of a couple of other Asian Pay TV networks the annual figure is actually well over the 40M mark.

I guess he’s trying to compare apples to apples when he is comparing the A-League only media revenue (32M) to the Super-Rugby revenues.

As a Rugby League ambassador, he’s always been the sworn enemy of the ARU and still hasn’t forgiven them for stealing Rex Mossop. 🙂

Yes, unfortunately there are no football only stadiums in the A-League or any clubs that own grounds, so we have to be a bit agricultural when we play sometimes and maybe it does affect some of the play in the A-League.

Don’t go on your A-League memories – go on what they are achieving now. They have improved so much since they left the A-League.

Jedi is captain of an EPL club (Kewell Viduka Neill Emmerton Cahill never achieved it) has received the Crystal Palace Player of the Season Award 2 years running, is the EPL’s best defensive midfielder in terms of tackles completed, intercepted passes and minutes played this season.

Lets be realistic, but there is some hope to shine.

Great attitude Neil and well done.

I tell you what though, Rugby League is a great game too and I have enjoyed some great contests, great players like the immortal Magic Dragon and some epic grand finals.
I am very much looking forward to that opening state of origin game mate.

Come on You Blues!!!!! (Chelsea and NSW)

Good news AZ for WWS and the A-League.

“Spira a Wanderer for Two More
Matthew Spiranovic has today inked a new two-season deal with the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers that will keep him in Red & Black until at least the end of the 2015/16 season.

For all the details go to wswanderersfc.com.au ”

I hope he doesn’t get snapped up after the World Cup. The WC can become a bit of a player market if you put on a good show.
I can see Mat Ryan, Jedi and maybe Spira being chased by a few European agents.

Yes amazing result and we’ll never live it down from our Kiwi mates.
Undefeated and sent Italy packing.

Yep, so we all concur – the Auckland Savings Bank Premiership and Hyundai A-League are better than Seria A.
