Well said Blanchy. Rugby fans are enjoying a cracker SRP season but rugby fever needs to find a way to break its banks and start pulling in fairweather fans to help prop up the financials. Really doesn’t help when even Rugby interested people I know don’t realise when there’s a Tahs game in town. But maybe the cupboard’s so bare there’s no longer coin for marketing outside an Instagram account and behind Stan’s rugby paywall.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

What about national City V Country. Drovers V Dockers. Land Cruisers V Land Rovers. RM Williams V … well … RM Williams.

Yeah but have you heard some of these boys sing and play guitar!? Warranted scholarship imo

What if we pooled players from the 12 Shute teams into 3 geographically representative teams though? West of Sydney Uni for a Wests team, South of the Harbour for one and north of it for the third.

A sickle. They’re building a revolution at Ballymore and Kiss is our Lenin – returned from exile to lead us to glory.

Mack Hansen, Manny Meafou and Jack Dempsey go some way to prove we have plenty of talent, just not always the systems to identify or develop it or the opportunity to give top tier game time to help promising young players flourish.

Australia's rugby talent is the 'best we've had since 2003' - it's time to let them flourish, not be shackled by team 'system'

Based on how Kiss has developed his young squad and the relative success he’s had in a short time, I’d say there’ll be more to follow his example. The Rebels are well structured behind Gordon yet there’s still room to play eyes up footy when it’s on. The hurdle bigger than the coaching for me, is the marketing, which the author’s noted well. Kids need to be unwrapping their Cadbury Furry Friends (or Rucking Legends) in the school yard and finding a newly minted card with Tim “the Junkyard Dog” Ryan on it so they can swap it for a holographic Ned “The Shed” Hanigan. If running rugby is rewarded at the turnstiles and on the scoreboard it’ll become part of our “DNA”

And Fez is a very solid rolling maul finisher too.

How does he do it with not a Leaguie amongst them?

Yes, even the point about why they didn’t go with Hilton in order to allow Queenslands some consistency speaks to some transparency and rationale for decision making that seemed to be sorely lacking under Eddie.

The Rebels line out seems to falter more so due to throwing rather than the jumping. There was one occasion on the weekend where the ball was shot directly into the hands of a Highlander. Hopefully with a sharper shooting hooker in gold, that’s the final piece in the puzzle.

Were you playing in a white rugby kit against South Africans at the time?

Lomani gets huge discount on ban for shocking elbow after guilty plea, teammate has penalty halved

Yeah pretty crazy that blokes who legitimately try to dip and mitigate fast paced high collisions cop the cane but these two intentional acts go so tepidly punished.

That is interesting that it was a warm lead from a well connected Rugby tragic (we are lucky to have them). To be fair, I’m sure Hamish did a great job telling the intern to get the contract drafted before he Ubered up to Mr Wong’s for a long lunch.

COMMENT: Australian rugby is a depressing picture - the RA board must be axed and the constitution changed

I agree. It might not be every Rugby tragic’s cup of tea (full disclosure: I love it) but it can be a great gateway drug for fairweather fans. A simple introduction to the breakdown and the lineout for absolute novices. Plus it’s super popular, commercially viable and we have decent Australian programs and talent – all rare things in Aussie Rugby that make a case for embracing it and seeking to build a profit engine around it.

What's the point of Sevens? It should be used to develop Test players, and would be better at it than Super Rugby

If this works it could pose a decent model for rugby clubs going forward. Partnering up with A League clubs to pool resources and facilities that are fit for purpose (ie 12k crowds instead of 40k crowds).

The multi-sport model seems to work well for Stade Toulousain and Barcelona.

Yeah RA are in a spot where they’re vulnerable to the NRL being able to set the market to pump up prices and gut punch an already financially ailing RA. Not the player’s fault. RA could help themselves by letting the general public know there’s a game on instead of restricting advertising to Waratahs social media and behind the Stan paywall. Driving in last night there were hundreds of telegraph posters telling me about Sydney FC playing tonight – something I never would’ve known without that being there. The crowd was poor. RA needs to get off their backsides and advertise so they can start pumping their revenue and paying for talent sustainably.

'They've got to have some trust': DC's vision for star trio as Jorgo says gold jersey '100%' fuelled decision to stay

It’s like sun smart but instead of sunscreen and a hat it’s making sure you’re adorned with a prophylactic so as to avoid initiating the conception of a son.

But yes @Riggers, good on Jorgo, the Tahs and RA. Seems like a good kid and I’m happy that he’s staying in rugby. People will have opinions on the quantum but he’s not the first person to be paid a lot of money and he’s not going to be the last.

I think people are just so emotionally (and financially) invested in it they really want it to work. Think the first few years were promising but there’s no doubt we’ve set up a very costly comp. Makes it hard to leave cash for grassroots growth and marketing to compete for domestic eyeballs. And evidently Aussies don’t like losing to others and poor performance against Kiwi teams isn’t really something the other two codes have to compete with – at least on a much smaller scale.

But of competition is good for them though. Reds 10 jersey has plenty of good internal competition at the moment. But yeah I used to think the same. I like Super Rugby but starting to think it’s not fit for purpose for its two aims in Australia: to build Wallaby talent and cohesion and distribute a Rugby product throughout the country. Starting to think NRC with an Origin-like Possibles V Probables rep season throughout the season would work better. More teams, more tribalism, more local interest, more exposure for young talent but with an opportunity to build cohesion and compete for gold jerseys.

Yeah it’s nice getting a few younguns back from NH stints as more complete players

It’s reassuring ain’t it. HMP and Lynagh looking good. Mason Gordon promising. Charlie Cale a revelation. Really hope there’s enough local roster room and funds to build some depth and in-club competition if the Rebels go.

Maybe more competition for the midfield if Daugunu decides to relocate again.

I won’t be happy until he uses the full legal name as recognised by ASIC.

I reckon that could’ve been an interesting experiment at one point.
