That fight was the low point in the division and was coming for quite some time. I thought that the big Klit would dismantle Fury. But Fury out-Klitschkoed Klitschko.

Anyway, wilder is the one to watch.

A new beginning for heavyweight boxing

A lineal trophy would be the most pointless trophy in world sport. Everyone knows who the best teams are anyway.

Let every country play for the Ashes

With the Broncos, Cowboys and Melbourne having combinations that are so good, the question becomes, why is Queensland so good at producing them?

And why hasn’t NSW produced a decent half pairing for such a long time?

That would be a funny comment…if rugby league players weren’t walking into national union teams so often.

Have we forgotten the other goal Maradona scored in that quarter final? He dribbled through the entire England team and put it in the back of the net. It was genius.

Why Maradona can't be considered the greatest of all time

For the record, thats a photo of Alex Leapai, not Pulev.

Klitschko or Fury: Which king will win the throne?

Nice work. Interestingly enough, the link between MMA and street violence in Sydney is tenuous at best, simply because non-domestic assault has been steadily declining in Sydney. All it takes is one or two very violent deaths to whip up a media storm.

It just goes to show you that if people “don’t like something” they’ll try to get it banned.

In defence of mixed martial arts

One final point. Was he an ex-English cricketer or an English ex-cricketer?

UFC are still fighting for respect in Australia

Good call about the World Cup match.

We’ll see what pitches Melbourne and Sydney throw up. Hopefully something for the bowlers.

I think the article is a bit of an overstatement. The success that the aussies had in the Ashes a few years back was on the back of a superior bowling attack. The Poms won back the urn with their five pronged attack. The resurgence of New Zealand is mainly due to Southee and Boult.

The end of cricket as we know it

To add fuel to the fire: FitzSimons wrote a column praising this years Melbourne Cup and the story behind its first female winner. Horse racing isn’t exactly the safest sport in the world for its competitors – male, female, or equine.

The highest paid fighter in the entire UFC is a woman, and that would never have happened if it weren’t for the sport. Rousey along with others would be slumming it on the pro judo circuit with virtually no recognition.

UFC are still fighting for respect in Australia

Spot on.

I don’t see the reason why the fight couldn’t have been stopped when Rousey had her head kicked in and was clearly unable to defend herself.

UFC are still fighting for respect in Australia

Oh ok. I accept your points and agree with you that there’s room for reform in UFC.

Ban UFC? Okay, but first we must ban...

The research I’m referencing is a study of the fights spanning UFC 66 – UFC 146. You can find a link to it here: http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2014/3/30/5558862/mma-research-finds-traumatic-brain-injury-ufc-fighters-knockouts-tko .

The methodology is a bit questionable, but the results say that UFC is the most dangerous sport when it comes to head trauma.

Peter FitzSimons had a piece in the Herald today, in which he rightly pointed out that other sports are moving to protect their athletes from head injuries (no shouldercharges, no lifting tackles, better helmets, etc.) UFC is going against the trend. But I don’t think it follows that it should be banned.

Ban UFC? Okay, but first we must ban...

That’s the admirable thing about US sports: they try to educate their athletes.

Should we be encouraging exercising the mind as well as the body?

The arguments for the banning of the sport are essentially utilitarian. One argument says that the sport promotes violence in society and in the home. I’m yet to see any evidence for this. The second is that it poses an unacceptable risk to the participants. This one I’ll take on. A recent study found that UFC fighters suffer traumatic head injuries at about 2-4 times the rate of other contact sports like american football and ice hockey. This was however, in the words of the report, a “very liberal” definition of a THI. So at what point does a sport become too dangerous? We’ve seen actual deaths in cricket, soccer, motorsport and horseracing. But the volume of the calls to ban something are proportionate to how mainstream a sport is.

The brawler was beaten by the fighter. Ronda was chasing shadows in that fight.

No, but I’ve read enough and I think I summarised everything in my post. If the author believes there’s a world of doubt out there for Hayne then he could have named someone doing it, or even put in a link for us to check out.

The Hayne Plane will soar, and you'll eat humble pie

I’ll bite at another explanation for the rise of UFC: boxing has fallen away as a popular sport, especially in the heavyweight division. Over the past 10 years there haven’t been any real knockout artistes, allowing the giant Klitchko to bore everyone into submission. The main beneficiaries have been the welterweights and MMA.

I don’t agree with your veiled reference to MMA causing more domestic violence. The causation runs the other way. If anything, more violent individuals are likely to gravitate to the sport. MMA is no better at producing well-rounded individuals than boxing and rugby league.

I’ll always be a boxing fan because the rules are perfect and have remained the same for 160 years. Watching two fighters roll around on the ground doesn’t appeal to me.

Ronda Rousey and the dangerous glamourisation of UFC

This article is a stub, consider revising.

From what I gathered there were plenty of articles supporting the Hayne plane. He was on the front pages when he made the 49ers roster. In the US, the pundits are saying that since San Fransisco’s season is in tatters, they can only gain from letting Hayne loose on the field. There were even editorials calling to temper the Hayne hysteria.

The only guy that wrote anything bad was Peter FitzSimons, and even he acknowledged he was wrong when Hayne made the roster.

The Hayne Plane will soar, and you'll eat humble pie

The thing with boxing is that sometimes the stars align and you get a perfect fight. Much of the time you have politics and money getting in the way. If you’re at the top of your game nobody wants to fight you. Boxing tends to produce fighters that are made for each other (think Rios-Alvarado, Pacquiao-Marquez). Mundine and Green are made for each other in the same way.

For a long time I thought Green was just a bad smell that just refused to go away. The past couple of years have shown me that Choc’s no different.

Mundine-Green bout a step closer to reality

It’s a pity I’m stuck at a bar, not watching this. Even the casino isn’t screening it. What’s the world come to?

For those interested pacquiao knocked down Marquez 3 times in the opening round of their first fight. One of the judges incorrectly called it 10-7, thereby changing the result of the entire fight.

So still hope for Mundine…;)

I’m on Mundine on points.

One of the most talented people to ever play sports in this country, his mouth has cost him a lot of respect over the years. But I guess you gotta sell fights somehow.
