While I agree that sometimes the penalties do not fit the crime sometimes simplicity is the best option with these sorts of things. The less grey areas in the game the better.
The last thing we want is a team to get 40 tackles on the goal line. If you want that just try and find some old footage of league in the pre-tackle count era.
Also I think it is a bit of a myth that the Roosters deliberately give away penalties on their own goal line. The roosters are penalised more than any other side just about in every facet of the game. The Refs look to guys like JWH and get them for penalties frequently. Even when they aren’t warranted. Near the goal line the Roosters hold the opposition down no longer than any other NRL team.

I disagree. Smiths kicking is great. his kick into the corners out of dummy half that hold up inside the ten are superb.
Plus he can hit with his left and right foot

i think he was trying to quantify their actual value (as percieved by him) not their contract.
I think he has McCullough and Ennis to high. McCullough is ineffective and Ennis just gives up way to penalties and constantly puts the dogs on the back foot with his antics.

I think we are sort of on the same page Muzz. Smith isn’t quite what he used to be. If he is still the best number 9 in the comp it isn’t by much.
I don’t think Segayaro is quite as good as everyone else seems to though. not yet anyway.

Definitely has a case. I’m not so sure. I watch most NRL games every week. It is getting closer and closer. I hold 2014 smith in the same regard as 2014 friend. career wise obviously it isn’t even close.

I never got on board with Buderus. I just never considered him on the same level as smith. Maybe you all see something i am missing though because even though i don’t think he was close to as good as Cam Smith he was still damn good. It was a shame his career ended the way it did.

Ahh the classic Coach Pop argument. What he has done in SA is amazing. but you can afford to rest players on an 82 game schedule. Not so much in the NRL. Storm are only inside the top 8 by 2 points. Imagine if they had rested smith a game or 2 earlier in the season or during origin period and they had picked up extra losses.

Friend is better than Farah. Farah has been a locker room cancer all year and has done nothing but fill the stat sheet. If i am picking a fantasy nil side Farah is the first man in. If i was making the signings for an actual team i wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot stick.
Stats are completely irrelevant in RL. Advanced statistics are the only ones that are valid anywhere and i am yet to see a single advanced statistic of relevence proposed anywhere in the NRL community. The only attempt I have heard is the one that said James McManus was the best winger in the NRL and Paul Gallen was the most valuable player in the NRL.

I don’t think the storm would swap them either. But there is no way the Roosters would swap Friend for Smith either. First time we have ever been able to say that.
Segayaro could be that good in the future maybe. But he is a much different player. More in the Isaac Luke mould than Smith’s in my opinion.
Also numbers can be twisted. Looking at raw statistics that you just mentioned above can easily be twisted to illustrate a different point. You could say that Smith has improved his ability to pick his spots since rd 12 averaging 0.3m per carry more since rd 12. I am sure i could make up a bevy of statistical arguments that suggest Friend is better than Smith. Statistics are only a tool for analysing the game. Not a be all end all. Especially in the NRL.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery Albo. Aside from goal kicking Friend possesses all the things you said Smith does in spades. Friend isn’t as good as Cam Smith in his prime yet. But I think he is better than Cam Smith right now. He is the best player on the reigning premiers and current premiership front-runners. If he isn’t back they could go straight out with back to back losses during the finals.

Cameron Smith is the second player the storm want kicking. Behind Cronk who is best kicker in the comp. Jake Friend avoids long kicking. But when the play is on he always comes up with the perfect kick.

I don’t think any of the clubs would generate money if they weren’t NRL clubs. The NRL is the product. Not the teams.

Roosters won the game on Sunday due to Pearce. He has been critical in every win over the last 5 weeks. Pearce is a bloody good footballer. He just isn’t great. definitely in the top 5 halfbacks in the NRL

Did they? I was only really young when Walters was in the back end of his career. But i can’t remember the excitement around him being anything like it is for Smith. Since then anyone i have ever talked to about Smith are like “Walters was good. But he wasn’t Cam Smith”
If Cameron Smith wore sky blue he would be considered one of the best Rugby League players ever by almost everyone in the sport. He is the best I have ever seen. And I saw a lot of Andrew Johns.

Pearce is a great player for the Roosters. As a QLDer i was glad to see you pick Hodkinson and Reynolds (who are truly ordinary) instead of Pearce and Maloney this season.

Mitchell Pearce has been fantastic for the roosters all of the last 2 years. You should try actually watching the Roosters games if you want to talk about them… Mitchell Pearce isn’t Wayne Pearce. But he is still a bloody good footballer. If his name was Mitchell Edwards and he played for the Rabbitohs you would all love him.

Cam Smith played more games for Australia, more games for State sides. Won a premiership. Won all the individual awards you can possibly win. The only thing Noel Kelly has on him is that he was in the team of the century… If it had been picked 10 or 20 years later I don’t think he would have been.

I disagree. His kicking game is inferior to Smith and Friends and though he hits harder his defence is poorer as well. Luke is good. Friend and Smith have been better this year imo.

I am aware of how much the position has changed. Funny thing is though. If Smith was alive in the 50’s or 60’s he just would have played halfback and probably still would have been the best player in the game. I have an 75 year old grandfather who says Churchill is way better than Slater. But Cameron Smith is the greatest rugby league player he has ever seen. As long as he is in that conversation I think the case for best hooker is justified. Though i am fully willing to admit that like most things it is all purely opinion.
Since the roles of hooker has changed so much you can only compare their individual accolades against players of other eras. And smith has won every possible award (bar a Churchill medal interestingly). He has won a premiership, 8 origin series, a world cup, a Dally M, a Golden Boot.
Smith is the Greatest in his position of all time. And in my opinion it isn’t even close.
