Looking back over the games, it appears that NZ were right into the niggle from the start.

Argentina remind us why we love rugby

Awesome interview, thanks Moaman

I find your lack of faith… disturbing. Hodgie can pack down at loose-head if required. Or anything else.

How the Wallabies go will depends on the preparation which players and coaches have been working on, which we can’t see. Fingers crossed!

There’s not much to be said about the selections. They seem fairly sensible:

– I really hope Sio justifies his selection. This is his chance to put some doubts to rest.

– This opponent should really suit Hanigan so I hope to see a strong performance from him.

– I still wish Rennie had included Tevita Kuridrani in this squad, but it is what it is. Anyway, Paisami, Petaia and Lolesio have the opportunity to shine in the centres.

I don’t find it either disrespectful or tiresome. Gardner put on a great demonstration of how to referee a test match where both sides are pretty aggressive to start with. He communicated well, and he wasn’t afraid to say the same thing repeatedly – sometimes that’s needed when player’s blood is running hot.

He did a far more competent job than Berry did in Bled 4, and as a result he was able to guide the match through with zero cards. Fans got to enjoy the spectacle, and the niggle was kept in check.

“Childish talking to”? The Ref dealt with it in a very mature manner. He said what needed to be said.

He didn’t denigrate Matera, but he made it clear that the Refs would handle that sort of behaviour not the players (and the Ref did – first Coles on a warning, then the whole team on a warning).

I didn’t see the exchange between Gardner and Matera in that light. They each said their piece, that was all. Gardner as referee got the final say, but he didn’t use that power to humiliate Matera. He listened to him, and then made his own point without constradicting Matera’s.

Bellini was great. Wait till they bring on their new rookies, Negroni and Aperol!

Italy drop jaws with phenomenal team try

Good point about the high kicks. They also added another dimension to their attack. I think it unsettled the ABs a little.

How did Argentina claim a historical win over the All Blacks?

“Sanchez reads the game, sees how poorly positioned the All Blacks are and has the nerve to put in a chip over the top. The lucky bounce and a second grubber from No. 8 Bruni sees Sanchez beat a number of All Black backs to score.”

Interesting – Hodge did a similar thing in Bled 4 to set up Wright’s try. As always with chips, the bounce has to go the right way, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I wonder if we are going to see more chip-kicking in international rugby this season? Even the threat of it can help to keep the defence off balance.

Interesting article Geoff, thanks.

“Unsurprisingly, coverage across Nine’s mastheads, including the Sydney Morning Herald, has been upbeat, its rugby, business and media writers grasping the wide-ranging implications.”

That’s useful, over and above the money. Rugby needs to expand its footprint in Australia again.

The Wrap: A great new broadcast deal for rugby? Depends on who’s telling the story

I thought Gardner controlled the game much better than Berry in Bled 4. He got into the captain’s faces as soon as there was any sign of niggle, told them what he expected, very firm, plenty of warnings.

The players were just as aggressive in this game as Bled 4, but there were no cards. It shows how cards can be avoided if the referee gets onto the issue early, and strongly.

Pumas beat All Blacks for the first time

I’ve seen a couple of his in the past, and thought he was okay, but not outstanding.

But Saturday night…

Pumas beat All Blacks for the first time

He is hardly a “journeyman” – only to the blind. His off-field record is irrelevant. No, he doesn’t say he’s a 12 – he has said over the past two seasons that he wants to specialise at 10. He was encouraged to do that by Brad Thorn and Dave Rennie, two good judges of player aptitude.

“who will be 33 at the next WC” – You mean like Sanchez, the 32-year old fly-half who just ripped apart the ABs?

“Are you suggesting the WBs cannot do better?” – Where did I suggest that? I do say that at this moment the WBs do not have better. There may well be some who are better by 2023 but we don’t know if that will occur nor who they are. Taking a rookie out of SR and annointing him the new messiah at 10 is a recipe for disaster.

So who should play ten for Australia?

So Nico Sanchez played a blinder at 10 vs the All Blacks – at age 32.

I wouldn’t be as quick as some are to write off the chances of Slipper, Arnold, Simmons, JOC or Toomua playing at RWC – they will be much the same age as Sanchez then.

Younger players who want their spots will have to earn them.

Pumas beat All Blacks for the first time

If Cheika “didn’t bring all that much”, Ledesma wouldn’t have had him next to him in the box.

Pumas beat All Blacks for the first time

I thought Gardner’s reffing was first class in this match, far superior to that of Berry in Bled 4.

Gardner made very clear to the players what he would accept and what would not. He got onto niggle early, and strongly.

I think it is no coincidence that no cards were handed out in this game, despite the players being just as aggressive as in Bled 4. Gardner controlled the game better.

Pumas beat All Blacks for the first time

I was very impressed with Montoya. Force are fortunate to get him.

As well as Sanchez and Matera, I thought Montoya was very impressive too.

He had a neat pilfer in the first half, and was impressive in the rolling maul, the scrum, and off-the-ball.

“Hodge is not of test quality in any position because he simply can’t tackle.”

I assume that’s not meant seriously. He defended quite well in Bled 4.

“JOC, Toomua ,Hodge and White have been around long enough for us to know that they are not winners .”

Players don’t win matches, teams do. But if you want to look at it that way, some of those players have a very significant level of winning.

“. Lolisio is exactly what we need.”

Sure, if we want to destroy a young talented player’s confidence and send the team onto yet another see-saw ride .

So who should play ten for Australia?

Lolesio will be looking at a bench spot, sent on at 10 or 12, at best.

So who should play ten for Australia?

If you look at the stats before and after, the combination of QC at 10 and Pat McCabe at 12 was one of our most successful periods.

So who should play ten for Australia?

You still haven’t explained why we can’t/shouldn’t build the tream around him. There are no “younger/better players” at present. There are players with potential who have been able to show some good results in a season (or less) of SR. That is quite different to being a better player at test level.

JOC is the incumbent 10 because he’s the best in the position. Lolesio and others are still learning how to cope with test rugby. If JOC is knocked off as first choice 10 it will be by Hodge or Toomua, at least currently.

So who should play ten for Australia?

We may not know who the messiah is, but we do know who the very naughty boy is, eh Lachie?!
