Bottom 8 for me.

Team looks good on paper, plenty of strike across the park. Won’t have issues scoring points

As you said, unless their defence improves drastically, I can’t see them being anywhere near a contender.

Who knows with Dessy, could pull it off.

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: Gold Coast Titans - Hasler must pick between Jayden or AJ to turn fortunes around

“ Other teams have woken up to the fact that if you don’t give them get out of jail penalties, they are impotent coming out of their own half.”

I couldn’t agree more. Without a significant amount of six agains and penalties, souths really struggle. Latrell and Walker are the 2 of the most dominant players in the comp when their team is on the front foot and rolling down field. If opposition teams hold their discipline, they struggle to make an impact.

How has it all gone so wrong for Souths in 2023?

Dogs will definitely improve from last year but I don’t buy into the hype with their new recruits.

Burton is quality. So is fox, but personally the rest aren’t really doing it for me. They’re not terrible signings, but everyone assuming their going to lift dogs into the top 8 under Barrett is premature.

Look at their big signings before 2022. Napa signed as an origin front rower and now can’t even get an nrl contract. Cotric was a NSW/Aus winger when he signed, his form fell of a cliff and didn’t last more than a season. Flanagan signed as the long term halfback and got dropped 3 times last year.

A lot of their “big signings” from prior years have flopped. I’m not saying it will happen this time around, but the jury is still out on these new recruits

Barrett’s last 2 seasons as a head coach, finished 15th with Manly and last with Canterbury. The jury is most definitely still out on Trent.

As you said but, the only way is up.

Nerd’s Eye View: New blood can reinvigorate Bulldogs as they face worst finals drought since 1966

What dribble..

The All Stars is a fantastic concept. It’s entertaining and the inclusion of the Maori culture was a masterstroke and has certainly made it a true spectacle.

But it’s a pre-season exhibition match and it always will be.

Comparing it to origin is ridiculous.

Everyone loved last weeks game despite the talent missing. Leave it as it is.

The NRL must pay Origin rates and shift the date to give All Stars game the prominence it deserves

Pearce is no doubt on his last legs, but I wouldn’t be releasing him unless they can find a replacement.

He is still the best half at the club and steers the team around. What is the knights winning percentage when Pearce isn’t there?

You can’t honestly go into next season with Clifford at 7 and Mann at 6. That’s not a halves pairing that will win more games than lose. Connor Watson is gone and I don’t see the appeal in moving Ponga to 6. I have no doubt ponga can succeed at 6, but you shouldn’t be weakening 1 position to strengthen another. His best position is fullback.

I’d take brooks unless someone better comes along which I don’t think is likely. Experts have been saying for a while now that brooks needs a new club/fresh start. I’m not saying he’ll steer the club to a premiership but i think it’s their best option.

Tigers however, have confirmed they wont release Brooks, so it will be interesting how it plays out.

The Knights’ No.1 problem if it’s a case of Pearce off

Never thought I’d see the day where aaron woods was anywhere associated with the word ‘underrated’

The 2021 NRL all-underrated team of the year

Before Adam O’Brien took over in 2020, the Knights hadn’t made the top 8 since 2013 under Wayne Bennett. I know they only finished 7th last year and will likely finish in the same position this year, but considering the injuries they’ve had over the last 2 season, O’Brien has definitely got a pass mark.

Losing Connor Watson isn’t ideal, but also not the end of the world. He’s a good player, but not a great player and he won’t reach any great heights in his career (origin etc).

They have a well balanced squad next year with a good mix of experience (Pearce, Klemmer, Frizzel, Gagai) and youth (Saifiti twins, Ponga, Best, Brailey, Clifford). It is definitely not the finished product and I dont think at the moment they are competition heavyweight. But if they can get better luck injuries next year, develop a few more juniors and recruit well, they can definitely build towards a premiership in the next few years.

Unlikley, but not impossible, and I think O’Brien is the coach to do it.

Are the coaching issues in Newcastle overblown? How O'Brien's proved his worth

Bradman is a great talent, but come on, I have little doubt that Harry grant will win rookie of the year. Heck, if he continues his current form, he’ll win the dally m medal!

Bradman in line for Dally M honours as the Best young talent in the NRL

Not sure how you can justify having Marty Taupau ahead of the likes of Cordner, Murray, J Trbojevic & Haas.

The top 50 NRL players of 2019: 20-11

Jayden Brailey will be a crucial signing for the Knights as their instability in the spine was a major problem this year. They also need to settle on a halves partner for Pearce and stick with it. Whether its Watson, Lino or Mann remains to be seen as none of them made a solid claim to the no.6 this year.

Adam O’Brien has proved this year at the Roosters that he has a great attacking coach; and with a strike weapon like Ponga at his disposal, there is a lot to look forward to in 2019 for Knights fans.

However, I still feel there are weaknesses in this squad in particular their depth and outside backs. Time will also tell whether Adam O’Brien can run a first grade as head coach and not just as an assistant.

The Knights can bounce back in 2020

Good on him for giving it a crack, but I feel he’s not much of a chance of making the NFL. He’s a talented athlete, but the blokes he’s competing with are 5kg heavier, they’re faster and have played the game much longer than he has.

It’s just a matter of time before he’s back in the NRL, especially with the amount of money clubs are willing to pay him.

Holmes focused on NFL but eyes NRL return

The six again controversy definitely grew way out of proportion, most caused by the media. If roles were reversed, and it was the raiders who got the lucky call and go on to score the winning try, there wouldn’t be a blow up. Everyone wanted the raiders win and how the game panned out left a sour taste in most neutral fans.

If you really want to nitpick, I thought keary’s legs were 100% taken out from underneath him in the trainer incident. If the ball didn’t hit Soliola’s head it would of been a penalty to roosters. It has been a penalty all year.

I agree, roosters deserved their victory.

Chooks won. They were better. The end.

It’s been a great finish to the year for the doggies. They’ve shown a lot of pride in the jersey and gave their fans a lot to hope for in 2020.

However as mentioned in the article, they have finished strong in previous seasons and flopped in the subsequent year. The current roster most definitely needs improvement. The salary cap situation should improve each year and if they recruit wisely they can work themselves into a top 8 side.

In my opinion, they are still another year or two away, but they are heading in the right direction.

Dean Pay's young Bulldogs are ready to build on 2019

Let’s be real, the only way a Sydney team will be relocated is if they go broke. The NRL have already confirmed that they will no longer bail out struggling clubs.

I agree that Cronulla are definitely the club most likely to go under. They’ve been bailed out by the governing body 3-4 times in their history and reportedly made a $3 million loss in 2018. I know they sold off the property development for approx $40 mil so they do currently have funds and cash flow. However that money won’t last forever and they have sold off just about the last of their assets (besides the stadium/leagues club). If they don’t use this last cash injection wisely, I’m afraid the sharkies could be chopped in 5 or so years.

It's evolution, baby! Why the NRL needs to go back to the future

O’Brien will no doubt have some work to do. But the addition of Jayden Brailey definitely adds some stability to a spine which already contains Pearce and Ponga. Throw in an origin front row pairing of Klemmer and Saifiti and there is definitely a squad to work with.

However, I believe they are AT LEAST 3-4 players short of being a top 4 contender. Besides Ponga, they’re back 5 doesn’t pose much of a threat compared to the good sides and they need more quality in the pack.

Whether O’Brien is up to the challenge, only time will tell.

Adam O'Brien can mark the beginning of a new era at the Knights

The spine was definitely the killer this year for the Knights. 10 different combinations is just ludicrous.

I also think everyone (especially the media) hyped up the Knights way too much at the beginning of the year. Besides Klemmer, Saifiti, Ponga and Pearce, I find the rest of the team fairly average. Ramien was complete flop. Players like Glasby, Fitzgibbon and Barnett are decent enough but nothing spectacular. Guerra and SKD although great players in the prime, are just about finished.

There is almost a belief that they need to do another rebuild and move on at least a half a dozen players. However, whichever coach goes in there next year, it is a definitely that you can work with.

Where did it all go wrong for Newcastle?
