No. They went to yellow, had it it reviewed for a red card upgrade and that review (which I think is official, yeah?) came back with it not being a red because he didn’t target the leg. It was reviewed for the coat hanger you claim and Barnes clearly said his hand was over the shoulder (which it was).

Your point at the start of the article was that NZ can’t complain because the minnows got a rough run from the officials earlier in the tournament and NZ didn’t say anything then. You then drift into a vague claim that NZ didn’t get any bad decisions from the refs at all. Which is it?

The one thing we can agree on is Barnes should not have been threatened. By anyone (he had similar treatment from other nations fans). Like many NZ fans I find that abhorrent, but you seem to want to lump us all in together. That’s pretty poor form from someone claiming to be a writer.

The All Blacks need some self-reflection before they lament 'consistency' from World Cup Final referees

Ummm, the official review came back saying Frizzell didn’t target the leg. No targeting and it’s not even a penalty, let alone a card. Review the footage, his knee goes to ground first before he topples over into the hooker (and a stray Kitshoff elbow to the head). Are you trying to make the point that officiating was good in the final, or that it was bad for minnows as well?

Nobody is insisting on being awarded that try. Decision has been made and can’t be changed. Point is, it was wrong to call it back 5 phases according to their own rules, which contradicts your earlier point that they got everything correct.

That is debatable. But even if we agreed on that it would mean the sport has become a farce.

Thanks Spiro. Great article. World Rugby has tied itself in knots over player safety, and it isn’t getting any better.

I almost feel sorry for Barnes after the dust has settled, he was really thrown under the bus by Foley.

In regards to the Frizzell incident, as you say once the TMO intervened he had no choice. He couldn’t very well say “I see what you’re saying, but look at his knee going to the ground first, rather than the weight onto the exposed leg. And that rule around targeting of the exposed limb is meant to prevent players barreling into standing legs, not falling on one on the ground”.

There is a parallel in the disallowed try for Aaron Smith. Once Foley intervened and showed a knock on by Savea, Barnes couldn’t hit back with “Mate, you’re right, but that was five phases ago and you are only supposed to go back two.”

In the Italy Uruguay game, at one point Angus Gardner told Foley to “only come in if its clear alright?” Unfortunately in that incident it appeared Foley was right and Gardner was wrong. Maybe that emboldened him for the later games, but it seems to me you’d want a TMO role to be clearly secondary to the on field ref (you can begin to understand where Gardner’s frustration might have come from).

It’s impossible to tell what the rule is all about when it comes to head contact. Kolisi runs in at pace, Cane is standing and Kriel runs into him. On that basis Kolisi is more likely to cause harm, but he is okay because he’s slightly bent over. How could Cane to bend over when the player changes direction by ninety degrees from a metre away? Isn’t that step some mitigation? And the hit on Ethan De Groot was okay because of a bend at the hip, apparently.

World Rugby jumped the shark on the weekend. And it’s notable they haven’t said a word since.

That’s rather wishful thinking. All Blacks had the core of a great team together in 2007, and were unlucky to be knocked out in the quarter finals. Wallabies aren’t nearly at that level.

Wallabies are where the All Blacks were in 2007 - it's time to look in the mirror or risk more embarrassment

Not a classic at all. Why would you want to watch that again? Would have been much better with 15 v 15, and may have lived up to the hyperbolic acclaim in your headline. Well done boks.
