Col, a forward can average 5 goals a game but if he only plays four games a season, it doesn’t count for much. Your season goal tally & the amount of years you can sustain it for, is the real benchmark of a great forward. When is the last time you read an article about great forwards from the past that kicked 200 goals over 7 years? Wayne Carey never achieved a Coleman medal, but please don’t tell me you wouldn’t choose over Curnow or McKay. BTW, that was another great duo not previously mentioned. Carey / Longmire.

Col, you can average 5 goals a game but if you only play 4 games a year, it means jack sh*t. How many goals a year you kick & how many years you can maintain that for is real factor that earns respect. BTW, Wayne Carey never won a Coleman medal like Harry McKay has. But please don’t tell me you would choose McKay over Carey?

These duos, are AFL players that are being compared against when someone states “one of the best key forward duos of the modern era”. Neither McKay or Curnow are teenagers starting their careers, they are half way through them. Both of them have averaged less than 30 goals a season since starting at Carlton. Gehrig & Lucas that you neither have high opinions of, both averaged a fair bit more than that over very long careers. As previously said, talent is a wonderful thing, but consistent performance & longevity separates talented players from great players.

Macca you agreed on the era, don’t change it now that it doesn’t suit your case. Neither of those Carlton forwards are going to get near the playing records you forgot to mention like Barry Hall, Jack Riewoldt, Josh Kennedy, Fraser Gehrig or Mathew Lloyd that all had very serious forward partners. Each of their forward partners have already kicked between 450-550 goals. Even the Hawthorn 3rd & 4th kickers of Breust & Gunston might outdo them. They are near the end of their careers but they have already kicked over 1000 between them.

You have to take those Navy Blue glasses off Macca. Lucas “I’m not a big fan of” . The guy only kicked 471 goals. That duo you chose to leave of the picture, kicked over 1400 goals combined. “Goodes never kicked 50 goals in a year and only got past 40 twice”. You are aware that Harry McKay has only kicked more than 40 goals twice?

Lloyd Lucas, Kennedy Darling, Gehrig Riewoldt, Riewoldt Lynch, Hall Goodes.
Probably a couple of others, but those are the major ones that spring to mind.

The term “modern era” can be a very subjective. Does the author mean “in recent years”? I would be happy enough to term the modern era as about 25 years. E.g. since 2000. As it would normally take a 10–12-year period to kick 500-600 goals, which the strongest forwards do. It would be silly to judge this sort of thing for a period of just the last 10 years. I would say they are the strongest FF/CHF playing in the competition in 2024. But they are a fair way back when you start talking about the modern era.

Talented players no doubt, but how does the title of “one of the best key forward duos of the modern era” sit in your mind Macca? Talent is a wonderful thing, but consistent performance & longevity separates talented players from great players. Do you think either of them will kick 500 goals in their careers? Just out of curiosity, in your opinion, how many career goals does a power forward need to kick to move from being an unlucky player with injuries to a great key forward?

The bookies have them on the 4th line of betting at $7.00. For all the talent you have detailed in this article, I wouldn’t be backing them at anything less then that price. Teams that include “one of the best key forwards duos of the modern era”, normally start a bit shorter then $7 in betting markets. BTW, this duo have only kicked 460 goals between them since they arrived at the club in 2016.

No one including the AFL is advocating touch football here. No coach is going to ever train their players not to jump. They are going to need to train their players not to jump into players marking the ball with their shoulder making contact with their opponents head.

Mixed news for Giants as Greene, Hogan Tribunal verdicts revealed

You are probably right Macca. It might have.

Mixed news for Giants as Greene, Hogan Tribunal verdicts revealed

Yes, I probably worded it incorrectly. I meant for anyone wanting to split hair’s between the guilty & the non guilty verdict last night. Of the two incidents, only one of them was ever going to result in concussion. I hope Hogan was fined & given a strong warning. My Mrs would be glad to trade me in for a better model, but those ladies you speak of would be setting a pretty low bar themselves if they were prepared to sign me up on a long term contract.

Toby is a super player indeed, but sometimes we just have to live in a world we make for ourselves. He braced for impact as his timing was just a bit out, but that is no consolation to the player lying on the ground undergoing a concussion check.

I hope Hogan got a fine to make a point. But both players were going tit for tat & it wasn’t a blindside punch as they both were looking at each other. His impact was never going to result in concussion. Toby Greene’s was not intentional but they changed the laws this season to cater for this situation after the Maynard event. The incident didn’t occur whilst Toby was making a legitimate marking attempt & he made head high contact. 1 week suspension, thankyou linesman, thankyou ball boys. As long as they keep the consistency, I am happy for the AFL to make this call.

Both Essendon wins this year have something in common. Both their opponents kicked their way to a loss. Saints kicked 9.13 & the Hawks kicked 11.17. Reasonable kicking performance by these opposing teams would have Essendon 0.4.

Footy Fix: Does the Essendon Edge not apply to Connor Rozee or something?

Liam Baker has been playing AFL since 2018 & is quite a skillful player. Some coaching to be more disciplined when attacking the ball would be a good idea. Some would say it’s basic commonsense. BTW, Macca’s position on a lot of issues are also a long way from commonsense!!!

Wright learns fate as massive hit on Swan sent directly to Tribunal

A couple of times yesterday he got caught high before he got a chance to raise his arm & drop his legs. The no calls have brought this to a “head”, excuse the pun.

Umpires' anti-Ginnivan bias has reached a new low - it's time for the AFL to step in

Did you watch the game yesterday? I am not sure this issue is as bad as the article suggests but I saw a couple of no calls on Ginnivan yesterday that were straight forward free kicks. Macca, you would have been seething if these same no calls were repeatedly ignored on Patrick Cripps. BTW, there were a couple of free kicks given yesterday where players from both teams were unaware what offence was for & who’s free kick it was. It was a bit comical when the commentators were puzzled as well after reviewing the replays.

Umpires' anti-Ginnivan bias has reached a new low - it's time for the AFL to step in

The easiest & most simple step to reduce the amount prolonged score reviews is for the AFL to use the same logic of the rest of the sporting world. If the ball brushes the inside of the posts without being touched, full points are awarded & move on. Soccer, Rugby, Basketball, NFL, Hockey, Golf & NRL don’t waste needless time reviewing endless replays to see that the ball has gone through cleanly. The same rule applies to both sides, so just back to the centre & get on with the game.

That’s your thoughts?

Ando, Baker didn’t have eyes for the ball & made front on contact with his shoulder to the opponent’s head. He won’t be playing next week. It’s as simple as that. BTW, Specsavers are having a special offer. Any two pairs for $199.

It should be a great season with the betting very open. I can not see a clear favourite. As a Hawks man, I am going into the season with the view of “no expectations, no disappointments”.

'Strongest drugs code in sport': AFL set to revamp three-strikes policy amid new 'secret immunity' bombshell

I understand that WADA tests for Cocaine as a performance enhancing drug as a pIayer may go into the toilet during the half-time break & snort a line in an attempt to limit short term fatigue etc. Although I don’t claim to be an expert, I would imagine WADA doesn’t want put itself in a position where it has to set a bench mark that clearly separates the levels found are actually performance enhancing or just residual from previous use. For example, the police use 0.05 when performing roadside alcohol testing. If it was possible to set an agreed benchmark, would you be happy for just the performance enhancing levels to be published by WADA & the residual levels be documented as negative? I believe any young person who gets themselves into a drug dependent lifestyle is setting themselves up to under achieve. I believe in personal accountability, but I don’t believe an employer should have the right to submit it’s staff for random testing for recreational drugs no matter what your occupation is. A bit of light reading attached.
