A typical NSW upbringing in days gone past. Interestingly, my boys are both Adelaide born and bred. I came here years ago to study and simply stayed. They both grew up with football and basketball. Surprisingly not interested in Aussie Rules or cricket, although the youngest is now playing Aussie rules for the school team as it seems his skills as a goalkeeper transfer to Aussie rules. I tried to push both into cricket….they simply were not interested. They fell in love with football…and I did too.

It’s definitely not inherited…I was a goalkeeper in Sunday division 10 over 35’s!! He was better than me when he was 12 years old!

At the time I should’ve tapped into the popularity of Olivia Newton’s John.

We did our best!

I grew up on a diet of Rugby League, Rugby Union and Cricket, in a NSW country town. I’m a late arrival with soccer, but I love it.

11 years ago the wife and I went to USA to visit friends. My eldest son, then aged 10, was wearing an Adelaide United shirt at Disneyland. A guy also in the waiting line for those stupid rides came up to us. He was a Melbourne Victory fan who was then living in LA. It was great! He was then following LA Galaxy but said he still followed the aleague. Back then he had some Foxtel app or something. Later that day some people from Adequate approached us. We made new friends due to my son wearing that shirt. That was when they were sponsored by “Jim’s Plumbing”.

He better look out. I love it in the crowd when everyone yells out “well done keeper”, thinking to myself “that’s my boy”. I never tell the crowd that’s my son…a howler could be just around the corner!!

The attacking mindset works when you score more goals than the other team. Did not happen here unfortunately.

Arsenal survive almighty scare from Ange's Spurs to stay on top as City cut down Forest

It is the absolute highlight of my weekend….win, lose or draw. And the bacon and egg sandwiches are magnificent!! Yep, he’s still goalkeeping, and he’s grown another inch or two over the summer which will help!!

There are only two leagues around the world I take an interest in. Adelaide Under 14’s Northern Districts and the Aleague. Could not give a hoot about the rest, although I am forced by my son to watch the odd Manchester United match.

“The kid’s a star”. He rehearsed that a month.

Six Points: Channel 7's commentary, the AFL's most underrated coach, and what on earth is wrong with a draw?

Good points. I am no expert, I just love watching football. But the Aleague is basically just “another” football competition in Australia. Football in Australia does not revolve around a single contrived competition like Aussie Rules does with AFL and like Rugby League does with NRL. We have the Socceroos in World Cup qualifiers and Asian Cup stuff. Matildas likewise…and they are without doubt the most popular National team in Australia. Even Aleague clubs play in other competitions…CCM in AFC final. There is also the Australia cup along with friendlies against overseas clubs. In other words, football in Australia does not rely completely on the rise and fall of the Aleague. Or am I wrong.

What a day of football Saturday. The highlight for me was CCM and Wellington going at the same time. I had channel 12 going with paramount on my laptop at the same time…wonderful stuff. And the premiers plate is still alive, with my beloved reds involved!!

Footy Fix: Tigers try to drag Dees down to their level and beat them with experience - and it nearly works

Anzac eve. What is that? And how does this AFL media campaign, obviously taking advantage of Anzac Day, include New Zealand?

I need to be a realist towards the end of the season!

Will be a great day at Gosford on Sunday. If Adelaide already eliminated, I will oddly be cheering on the Mariners.
