Rugby League Nut

when you say: “you will need to do a little better then that!” (sic), well, no one has to do anything.

Research firms like Repucom have done the work, and sponsors and commercial FTAs all know where the numbers lie.

There’s nothing anyone is saying on this board that is going to alter what’s in the latest Repucom report.

It all adds up to a guaranteed billlion dollar deal.

AFL's TV deal choking NRL, Socceroos

Yes, that’s all reasonable.

On the last point, it might come very close, on the other hand, the higher AFL scoring does give commercial stations the opportunity to sell lots of ads.

What Redb says below is the bare minimum.

But you are failing to factor in the value of Nine now commencing negotiations with equal billing to 7/10.

Like last time, 7/10 are going to be asked the question: how badly to you want them?

They may not want to match Nine’s $450 mill – so be it – internet rights will push it well above the $1 billion anyway.

It’s win win.

But Bale3, who is denying rugby and soccer? Who is to blame?

The commercial FTA networks will go where the numbers are, they aren’t going to pull out blank cheques just because you think they ought to.

In relation to media space, soccer fans appear to forget that a Government owned broadcaster has been pushing soccer, at taxpayer expense, to the exclusion of all other sports, for 30 years now.

That’s actually more of a scandal than a privately owned company spending its own money to further its own business interests.

Nine now on equal footing with 7/10.

Billion dollars guaranteed.

Berlin has started a second metro footy league, with all four clubs affiliated with AFL clubs:

What's the time frame on a 'project player'?

I agree with this.

Ultimately – this is a challenge about the mental toughness of the two individuals concerned:
1. taking up a new game at an elite level;
2. going back to being a rookie for a couple of years;
3. going from a culture of winning to accepting more than your fair share of losses, at least for the short term;
4. putting up with a fair bit of sniggering from all directions.

For Hunt, this whole season is a learning curve, maybe even next season as well – but it’s a big ask for a professional sportsman used to winning to commit almost three years to making a go of it.

It’s the same for Issy.

Of course they can do it if they dedicate 3 years of their lives and receive the very best training available – but that’s a massive test of mental toughness – it’s a rare individual that can do that.

Israel Folau: Izzy a flop?

Yes, but to ultimately lose by 90 points against a Reserves side, a side they are going to play against in the NEAFL, is pretty damning.

I guess the Suns had to cop a few early losses against VFL sides last year before they strung a few wins together – no reason to believe that the Giants won’t follow the exact same pattern this season (and next).

What were people expecting from the code-jumpers?

In fact, The Roar covered all this off in an article last year, quoting the Broncos performance director:

Experts say AFL recruits have tough road ahead

An AFL midfielder has to run, on average 160 metres per minute over a whole game.

If you’re on for 120 minutes (the average length of a game), you’re running 19.2 kilometres.

If you’re on for 90 minutes, you’re running 14.4 kilometres.

Key forwards will generally have fewer breaks than the midfileders.

I don’t think anyone could seriously doubt that Hall isn’t doing 12 kilometres out of the goal square, and Brown is doing 15 km from centre half forward.

AFL haters need to learn to choose the targets more carefully: game attendances and the endurance of AFL footballers are not good targets.

Israel Folau: Izzy a flop?

Yes – all the info you need is right there – a key position player will do a higher number of sprints – the km they get to will depend on the time they have on the ground, and Hall will typically do 12 km leading out of the goal square, and Brown will do 15 km because he is expected to cover more ground, with the true centre half forward doing a mixture of leading and the sort of running expected of a midfielder.

All I can say is that if any of you blokes wanted to shadow either Hall or Brown, you’d know about it.

Israel Folau: Izzy a flop?

Fair enough, looks like I’ve got no. 1 wrong, nevertheless, a related lesson to be learned about not allowing a player to play on so easily, turning your back on your direct opponent.

oikee

this is on the AIS page, but I’ve read countless such articles by sports scientists:

The norm is 12 to 20 km per game – this helps explain why Hunt is starting to cramp by half time – but it’s his first AFL game, so no shame there (his young team mates were struggling to get through the whole game as well).

Both he and his younger team mates need this season, and probalby the next, to build a foundation for playing footy at AFL standard – it’s an extremely demanding game – no one should be surprised by that.

The flip side is that parents are paying this money, and paying it quite willingly – participation rates have never been higher.

So the other side of the argument is that if parents are willing to pay such exorbitant fees – where is the harm in some junior clubs charging over the odds?

Economics tells us that if the parents don’t see the value in forking out the money, they will stop doing so – but there is no hint that this is about to happen.

Monteleone’s turn to grasp the FFV nettle

Good observation. NRL took a similar route (although those pesky Queenslanders still retain a fair bit of power). Rugby Union has never tried, and it shows today.

Monteleone’s turn to grasp the FFV nettle

Even a 34 year old Barry Hall is running a minimum of 12 km per game.

Jonathon Brown runs 15 km per game – I would expect that from anyone playing as a true Centre Half-Forward.

Israel Folau: Izzy a flop?

Really? I wonder. Man Utd ratings on Fox are nothing flash.

Roy Keane would be magic for the A-League

Justin Blieber probably earns more per annum than the AFL.

He recently participated in Barca’s training too.

Roy Keane would be magic for the A-League

Well done again Dugald.

I loved this line:

“That’s always been football’s problem; not just its lousy governance, but always being able to find lousy excuses for having such lousy governance, as if it thinks it can succeed just so long as those outside football think it’s all going terribly well on the inside and they smell the so-called fear. ”

Gradually I’ve picked up on the truth that junior soccer is a vast money pit, and I have personal experience with not only the pricey fees for 10 to 15 weeks of junior soccer, but the enormous cost should you be unfortunate enough to have a child involved in some form of rep soccer – we’re not even necessarily talking state representation here – there’s no shortage of “elite” training squads in any number of soccer clubs where the sole purpose appears to be generating revenue from parents who believe their child is destined for the Premier League.

Until recently, I had a very close association with a junior soccer club, whose raison d’etre is junior development, which is fine, but having collected sufficient revenue over the years to build a brand, spanking new club house, which is fine, I can’t think of a single kid that has gone on to do anything worthwhile in the past 15 years – despite the hundreds of thousands of dollars that have been generated over that time (at a minimum).

Monteleone’s turn to grasp the FFV nettle

Even when fussball is working overtime to personally denigrate others, he gets it completely wrong.

Roy Keane would be magic for the A-League

It’s a bit amusing to hear soccer fans say that a bloke who has coached in the Premier League is not good enough to coach in the A-League.

People, let us all be very honest with each other, not even Guifré el Pelós has the capacity to get an A-League team playing like Barca.

Roy Keane would be magic for the A-League

Great, there are a few teams absolutely screaming for 6ft 4 key position players – can he run 15 km per game or will be blow up at half time?

What's the time frame on a 'project player'?

A professional footballer has a career span of about 14 years (give or take), they are right to follow the money trail – nothing unusual about that – it’s precisely what gave birth to League in the first place.
