As much as so many people hate the introduction of T20 cricket, I don’t think it is that bad for the game of cricket at all. I agree it is having an effect on Test cricket but I don’t think this is all bad either. The increase in scoring rates and totals is making test cricket more exciting for the fans who might not traditionally have been interesting in following a game of cricket for 5 days. It puts some challenge back on the bowler as the have to work harder now to get wickets and we get to see moments like Peter Siddle pouring all his energy into getting wickets like we saw in Adelaide on the last day.
And as mentioned, there have been some success stories come from Test cricket, such as Faf du Plessis and David Warner who can boast records in both games that would challenge most worldwide with similar careers.

Is Twenty20 a plague or panacea?

While I agree legends and traditions need to be respected, it isn’t a reasonable argument for selection.
If Warne can prove himself in an arena lower than an international test, such as the Sheffield Shield, then maybe he should be considered for selection. And I don’t agree with comparing the figures of a guy who’s played one test match in Australia to a guy who played more than 10 years. Not everyone can be expected to produce fantastic figures straight up against the number one test team in the world. I think Starc is part of the future of Australian cricket since he is one of the only guys in the side who is under 30!

Show some respect, Mitchell Starc

Oh my bad, I must have seen the flag wrong! I really think Tomic and Hewitt will struggle early this year with so many points to defend and unfortunately that could ruin their season. I do think though that Del Potro is going to be the biggest threat to the top 4, especially at the hard court tournaments and it would be good to see him win another grand slam and break their dominance a bit.

I would like to see some players outside the Top 4 win something this year. Personally I reckon Murray will probably be a lot stronger now that he has his first title and I think Nadal will struggle to come back early in the season but as always he will be hard to beat in Paris. If anyone is going to do it though I think the favourite would have to be Ferrer purely because of his clay court ability. Other than that I think the main threats would have to be Berdych, Del Potro and Tsonga, pretty much anyone with a strong serve and fairly heavy ground strokes, although there are some real talents coming through who could be dark horses. I really want to see guys like Raonic and Nishikori be successful this year!

I’m not sure about over the general population but I know where I live you would be struggling to find ten golfers under 16, but there are enough junior tennis players at coaching for 3 different classes, 4 times a week. The work tennis Australia does with junior tennis players is one of the best junior sports programs I have seen so I think the money we put into this is completely warranted. This shows with us having both junior Wimbledon champions last year and 4 male junior grand slam titles in the last 5 years, more than any other country. Considering only one of these was won in Australia, we’re bringing some of the money we send back with the champions. And one of the main increases in money injected into it was to even out the prize money between women and men, something which ours was the first grand slam to do.
I think the money we are putting into the sport will pay off, we just have to wait for the next generation to come through.

I’m not actually sure where the 1901 came from, to be honest, when I was writing the story for some reason I remembered it as being the correct date but I must have been thinking of another event at the time. I will have to look closer into these dates when I’m writing my next story! Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I’m a Dragons fan too and I totally agree that Price needs to make the most of the talented youngsters he has. It was frustrating this year watching their predictable attack and they need something different which is what I think Drinkwater will provide.
We need play guys in their right positions too not putting forwards in the centres! Chase Stanley, Charlie Runciman and we had Denan Kemp in reserve grade all year, they would be better options than Scott or Prior in the centres.
I look forward to seeing a new Dragons team on the paddock next year and hopefully a bit more flair and creativity in attack.

The price is right for Josh Drinkwater

I think it depends on the source because the NRL classed the Centenary of League as 2008, which would mean it started in 1908 so I’m not completely sure.
And according to the NRL website, SBW is one of the Roosters new additions making me think he has been confirmed.

I just meant that there are teams that have a bit of breathing room under the cap. I’m not saying this system works by any means and I definitely agree that third-party deals should be included. There was rumours Lockyer played his final season on around 250,000 but also got a new car and about 400,000 worth of other third-party deals. I have no issue with increasing the cap, but only on the premise that they include or remove these third-party deals.

Thanks mate. This is my first piece so I’m open to any pointers I can get to make my stories better, particularly from the more experienced Roar members.
I completely agree that SBW’s integrity can’t be questioned and it is good to finally see a footballer honouring their word for once rather than doing whatever it takes to chase after the money, as is the case with Folau!

None of this was written with any offence intended and I never said that I was speaking on behalf of anyone but myself. For me, this year’s grand final just wasn’t as interesting as previous years. Both teams showed during the year that they could be flamboyant so I expected big things and a close contest. That’s not taking anything away from Melbourne, they were by far the better side on the day an thoroughly deserved this title.
