I think that’s the hope but the investors will need to bankroll it if the RA are to take the financial risk.

Five surprises, five disappointments and five things to figure out as Super Rugby 2024 reaches the end game

Nice wrap Harry. I liked your marketing question. It often seems to me that RA marketing is preaching to the choir and not to the lady on the tram. And it seems to me the big Rebels question is: what does RA do if they’re our top team?

Five surprises, five disappointments and five things to figure out as Super Rugby 2024 reaches the end game

There distinct issues here. One is the impact of COVID, which lots of businesses faced and many could not survive. Another is the RA funding cut, which added to the problem but which does not seem to be the primary. Then we get to the Rebels’ leadership. Even allowing for the imposed issues, the liquidator seems to be saying that they did not respond to (or perhaps even understand) that costs can’t be growing when the base revenues are inadequate – not to mention severely cut by the first two factors. It’s not clear from all this how the Rebels can be made viable. Which is a great pity.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

Good wrap John. I’d say also that the Blues and Canes are very cohesive, with good depth in their squads. Ponies will face at least as much trouble with Canes, and probably more judging from Canes set piece work.

ANALYSIS: Single biggest issue causing Brumbies headaches - and why it can be traced back to Fisher's departure

Player agents will do their job and reporters will feed it on. RA needs to focus on the breadth and depth of the development. I just hope they’ve totally given up on the RL poaching.

Wallabies in danger of losing Hanigan to ambitious French club just as forward enters his prime

Herbert said in the media article that he didn’t agree with the Hamster calls. No one can deny that RA board allowed the chair to run rampant. But it seems to me they’ve got the msg and have been able to convince some good people to join the coaching and development systems. Russ and co have yet to demonstrate that they’ve better options that the people in place.

'Easy to throw stones': RA chairman hits back at mudslingers' 'hypocrisy' after calls for AGM board cleanout

Apologies Russ – I should know the name! But I’m afraid that this campaign really can’t get support without transparency. We don’t need any more mystery boards.

'Definition of madness': Rugby reform must start with total cleanout of RA board - and this should happen next

Again, Ross makes a good argument. But he’s not yet saying who sits in those chairs. In my view the whole system has been shown up. That includes the state hierarchies. But we simply cannot trash the lot. Ideally there are excellent candidates to put up for board seats and they should announce themselves. Some might even get elected. Otherwise fans can get behind the team they follow and where they can, give certain people a good kick in the bum.

If Beale is a candidate then Sam Carter is a certainty.

Five things: What Beale has over other golden oldies, double pain for Brumbies as Blues expose Australia's biggest weakness

Medrano and Carter were huge. Their first half effort pulled the saders apart. White also had a very big game. Stewart is a really important piece of the force puzzle: he simply puts confidence into the tricky moments.

Beale, Rodda shine on Super Rugby return as Force smash Crusaders to keep finals hopes alive

I’d say Gordon is the choice right now. We have seen the 10s with both dominant and losing packs and Gordon is the one who comes out well with both. Noah had his chance last night to demonstrate grace under pressure and he didn’t. I don’t believe Donaldson is any more reliable at the test level.

Brumbies 'systematically taken apart by the Blues' in 'non-contest' as Larkham's men cop huge reality check

Bernie summed it up for me. Too much tackling was upright, which is a gift to powerful players. That said, canes and Blues are playing with power and cohesion.

Brumbies 'systematically taken apart by the Blues' in 'non-contest' as Larkham's men cop huge reality check

I thought the strong feature was the driving forwards play. Esp in the first half. They controlled possession and made yards. Left landers with very little opportunity.

'Like a Scud missile': World Cup reject leads rout, but Reds suffer fresh blow with Petaia's season in jeopardy

I’d be wondering about the pattern. From what I know all the people Schmidt has attracted are straight, direct and passionate. They’re all mature people who’ve had enough up and down time. All of them get very good reviews from players. None of them have any dodgy australian rugby politics. That will do me.

CONFIRMED: Wallabies land final piece of coaching puzzle as ex-Lion signs on ahead of showpiece event

We’ll find out!

Super Rugby teams week 9: Beale back for first time in 1494 days, Reds make 6 changes, Wallaby returns for Brumbies

But how many nations where the rich clubs control the game? I really hope we do not have to find out!

Scrap the Giteau Law: Rugby Australia should look to Rassie's 'Boks RWC recipe if it wants to re-join the big boys' table

Interesting point Harry. Which begs the question: what will unions do if French clubs end up crashing their livelihood? IMO fans want their national team to come first. Club owners and players might prefer other options. I’d be backing the national unions.

Scrap the Giteau Law: Rugby Australia should look to Rassie's 'Boks RWC recipe if it wants to re-join the big boys' table

Your points are good ones Harry. But you also offered in your podcast a strong negative: the effect on cohesion. WBs will likely have a young squad for a bit and not a lot of players who’ve developed closely together. Boks on the other hand have a lot of older players who’ve spent long periods together.

Scrap the Giteau Law: Rugby Australia should look to Rassie's 'Boks RWC recipe if it wants to re-join the big boys' table

Fraser was upright and his shoulder driving upward. Certainly chasing the ball, but contacted the melon instead. It’s the very action laws aim to stop. I remain flummoxed at the Drua decisions as both warranted harsh penalties.

'Not ideal': Reds star duo cop Super Rugby bans after red cards - but where's the consistency?

Rennie didn’t have an obvious 10 and was bringing on inexperienced options when cooper was unavailable. Kiss is in the same boat.

Five things: Lesson Aussie rugby can learn from Kiwis - and why next month will determine whether SR gap has closed

Makes a nice combo. I’d imagine Kellaway is up for 15, though Tom Wright is pushing hard, and we seem to have good options on the wings.

The Wrap: Crusaders' shot clock fiasco and shhh, don’t put the moz on Darby

With Foketi and Ikitau outside him, Gordon gets a lot of options and two very good readers of the game. Foketi is also very good at making ground in tight situations. The three together would give wings quite a bit more in terms of options. But I don’t know what happens if Carter isn’t kicking well?

The Wrap: Crusaders' shot clock fiasco and shhh, don’t put the moz on Darby

There were some very encouraging displays. Carter Gordon showing his resilience in contact as well as glorious pass. Foketi at the Tahs reminding us that he and Ikitau make a great WBs combo. Rebels front row. Tahs unsung Gamble and Heaven. But the Reds! What’s in their heads?

The Wrap: Crusaders' shot clock fiasco and shhh, don’t put the moz on Darby

Ref had a lot to do. I can’t recall seeing multiple deliberate knockdowns of a pass in defence by one team in a few minutes. Landers seemed to be inviting trouble. Lucky to not get a bunch of cards. But I’d say the kiwis were the ones complaining.
Rebels really need to sort their lineout and first up tacklers. Gifting opportunity to opponents. But they are fun to watch and great to see them putting a few wins together.

'Kid wonder': Lancaster, Gordon shine as Rebels take one giant step in locking in maiden Super Rugby finals berth

Great to see him have such a great comeback game. But he’s got a way to go before he’s a WBs contender. At this stage Noah seems like top choice with Carter held back by kicking.
