It wasn’t Nedlands they played for; I was playing for Nedlands when it ceased to be a stand alone club in the late 80’s (amalgamated with Claremont Cottesloe to become Claremont Nedlands )… pretty sure the Hollioakes played for South Perth. We did have a young Robin Smith (pre test debut) play at Nedlands; was a lovely bloke and could really bat. 🏏

Gap's never been wider between cricket’s Big Three haves and the have-nots ... and it’s only getting worse

BB, they can definitely add seats for rugby at Optus; its basically built for AFL so the rugby pitch is pretty small in the middle of the field, they truck in temp stands / seats at ground level. Easy to add in a couple of thousand seats that way.

agree with all that BNHF 👍

'Didn't want to leave': The Aussie-raised star in World Cup final - and the 'vision' that led him to the All Blacks

Kala was one of my favourite places to play; one of very few grounds in Perth where you could actually get muddy whilst playing 🏉

When I was in the states had discussion with people and even an NFL player who discussed how alot of players use the helmet as a battering ram and get concussed because of it.
This is true; I played 10 years of gridiron from mid 90’s – mid 00’s; was taught to lead with my head into a tackle (basically stick the guy as hard as you can with your helmet… ‘lay the hat’ was the phrase, with hat = helmet obviously eg ‘come on man, you’ve got to lay the hat on that guy’)… I stuck with my rugby tackling technique and played mostly offence anyway so not so much of an issue for me. That technique has been changed in recent years though; can no longer lead with the head so thats progress.
The other big issue was the extreme collisions when the person getting hit wasnt braced for the impact; think Wide receiver catching the ball, arms up, feet off the ground and getting pole axed.. whiplash type injuries would occur.
Whilst I am here; I spent 1 season with a div 1 football team (ie gridiron) as an assistant coach *(teaching rugby tackling technique ironically) and the linemen (especially O line and interior of D line) are just enormous human beings and despite being such units, the guys that get to div 1 let alone NFL level are typically frighteningly quick over 10 yards .. sure, they will run out of puff by 50 yards as its all about explosive power for them, but its startling to see such big blokes move so quickly when you are up close and (like me) a relatively normal sized human.

Paul didnt go to Aranmore though obviously

Paul Koteka played with Nedlands back in the 80’s

I was playing juniors at Baysie (under 16’s) when the All Blacks toured Australia in 1988; there was a reception for them (the AB’s) at Baysie’s club house in Morley which my team mates and I all attended… I got to meet a quite a few of the AB’s… was still ‘amateur days’ and they mostly looked like pretty normal blokes and were happy enough to chat with us young fellas. Baysie definitely had the Kiwi vibe in those days, played in black and everything 🏉

Thats my preferred approach BG 👍

David Warner's bizarre call to have umpire's stats shown on big screen to help players make DRS decisions

David Warner's bizarre call to have umpire's stats shown on big screen to help players make DRS decisions

100% agree on getting rid of the umpires call; the ball tracking showed the ball clipping the stumps if not for Warners pads being in the way… if it clips the stumps, the bails are coming off save some freak occurrence, so I think that should be out. Batsmen (and batswomen) have enough advantages as it is….

David Warner's bizarre call to have umpire's stats shown on big screen to help players make DRS decisions

yes, agree with your comments about Angus Bell Mike88, he is the real deal… also saw a lovely moment in the pre game where he made a young kids day / month / year by giving him a fist bump as they were lining up in the tunnel… young fella was lined up with Portugal ready to walk out with them, Bell reached across the isle, got his attention, offered the fist bump and a smile. Look on the kids face was priceless… so a great player and seems like a good man.

Wallabies' RWC hopes still alive after wild win over Portugal - but it will take a miracle to avoid historic first flop

Thanks Ken, its been a couple of decades since I lived in Sydney so happy to stand corrected on this,

learning how Leagues Clubs work

so… drawing in the punters with cheap alcohol and food which is subsidised by gambling machines?

Fair or not fair ?

I do acknowlege Pathways and marketing departments are far superior in NRL.

Besides decent scrums and lineouts the game is becoming very similar.

and rucks, lets not forget rucks and the contest for possession. I’m not being trite here (I acknowledge NRL players as skillful athletes etc) but its much easier to run a set backline play / planned move when you can have a couple of hit ups before hand where there is effectively no contest for possession to allow everyone to get into position (and / or catch their breath).

Patrice Lagisquet (although your phonetic spelling isnt too bad KFTD) was a dashing winger for France; scored 20 test tries. Had serious wheels back in the day; ran a 10.5 100m which is no mean feat. Part of some great French teams of old.

Gone in six-and-a-half minutes: where the Wallabies RWC campaign got away from them

So neither Lenny or Jorgo were fit to play at team deadline; but both were likely to reach fitness during the RWC. Jorgo gets picked and Lenny doesnt. Have I misunderstood that ?

This is no time for X-factor: The Wallabies' challenge is to find a structure to out-structure super-structured Wales

Spot on re the starter plays Jez

'We're going to go through some pain': Eddie bristles at SBW criticism but takes 'full responsibility' after historic loss

Hitting the ball up one out with your biggest baddest ball runners is very League like…. and in related news, the Wallabies attack coach is former NRL prop Jason Ryles.

(NB – I’m sure Ryles isnt directing the attack solo)

'Eddie got found out': Jones in spotlight as 'ferocious' Fiji leave Wallabies RWC hopes hanging by thread in 69 year first

Some decent points here Shore; dont think I’d describe the missed kick against Italy as a sideline conversion though. Highlights are on youtube; I just looked it up… try was scored roughly half way between 5 m and 15 m lines so lets call it 10m in from touch on his preferred side.

To be clear, I didnt (and dont) think Donaldson deserved to be the scapegoat for the loss to Italy, but it wasnt a sideline conversion he was trying to knock over.

But he also said Skelton was ‘still a chance for the Fiji game’ and that there was ‘no smoke and mirrors going on’. Hard to know what to believe… but seeing Skelton in the moon boot didnt look positive thats for sure

Plus couldnt win the gain line collisions regularly enough; much harder to jackal when you are busy getting back on side.
