What da heck?
Phins get a win, 2-2 in last 4 and jump 4 places.
Raiders get win, 4-0 in last 4, don’t move…haha!

NRL Power Rankings: More Dolphins magic, a Souths juggernaut and the less said about Dragons the better

Ridiculous! Do Sharks deserve a spot in the finals? Of course!
Now it fair to analyse the draw and results at the end of the season and retrospectively declare the Sharks had a cushy draw.
However it is not fair to say the Sharks do not deserve their ladder position, all they can do is their best with what the NRL gives them.
As for the NRL and the draw they gave Cronulla, it looks like a fair draw. The NRL can’t predict the future, they can create a draw based on the 2021 results.
Checking 2021, if we split ladder positions into quarters we have 4 blocks of 4 teams (1-4, 4-8, 9-12, 13-16). Sharks finished 9-12.
So what match ups did they get in the 2022 draw based on those 4 2021 team blocks?
1-4: 6 games
5-8: 6 games
9-12: 6 games
13-16: 7 games
Looks fair to me.

Do the Sharks even deserve a spot in the finals after their cushy draw?

Apparently they will now wear the jerseys next year. Does this now mean they are promoting actions that they morally disagree with?

'Advertising a sin': A Christian perspective on Manly's pride jersey

Ok, that’s all very cool and interesting. How do you now explain this:

“Manly’s jersey boycotters have told club management they are prepared to wear a pride jersey next season, as long as they’re consulted in the process.”

Yes I remember this as well, knew it was raiders but couldn’t think of players

There is some really weird stuff in the NRL rule book

One thing we know for sure is that ‘rubbish on the face’ is against the spirit of rugby league!

There is some really weird stuff in the NRL rule book

This is my fear for the Raiders as well, but I have some faith in the teams recruitment. Just think of the young unknowns that came through and had a huge impact in first grade this year – CNK, Simonsson, Horsburgh and Young. New young cheap players will come through and establish themselves.

The top 50 NRL players of 2019: 10-1

Good read and good series Scott. As with any list like this it’s just an opinion, and there was something the great Arthur Beetson liked to compare opinions to – as everyone has one.

I’m surprised Nelson Asofa-Solomona didn’t make the list just due to the hype around him at the end of the season.

Would’ve been nice to see a Tigers player get a nod as every other team has been represented. It’s not like they were at Titans levels of incompetence, they were one win off the finals. Brooks couldn’t squeeze in over a Shaun Lane, a Taukeiaho or a Morris?

The top 50 NRL players of 2019: 10-1

For any of these events where there’s a big outrage that someone has been charged, or someone gets off lightly, I always think “Ok, but what if everyone did it? What if it was done in every tackle”. They would come down hard and stamp it out because foul play is foul play! And repeat offenders are treated more harshly with each offence because they don’t learn their lesson and they’re repeat offenders!!!

Big name? Big game? Fine

4. Annersley has since admitted that there were 3 other errors made in that game against the Storm and he has stood Klien down from reffing duties this weekend.

Annersley pointed out the Munster knock-on call. Which does infact look like a correctly ruled knock-on. The ball does appear to be bobbling along while he tries gather it.

Touch-ups or touch judge: Which had a bigger impact on the 2019 NRL premiership race?

I remember Croker getting absolutely wacked in a tackle by Vunivalu when he didn’t have the ball (i.e. similar to the whitehead tackle), no penalty and no mention afterwards.

Touch-ups or touch judge: Which had a bigger impact on the 2019 NRL premiership race?

Why ignore the first half? Lets check the numbers:
Raiders lead for 42 mins
Game tied for 4 mins
Storm lead for 31 mins
Raiders retake lead for 3 mins

In total Raiders in front for 45 mins, Storm in lead for 31 mins.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember the Storm having very many chances at crossing the try line. Vunivalu crossed from a high cross field kick, and he was semi-close on a grubber kick but well covered by CNK in that play. Apart from that I don’t remember much ‘red-zone’ action close to scoring, no held-ups, not many repeat sets, no forced drops outs. Just one terribly obvious double movement from Asofa-Solomona. Early in the 2nd half the Storm had the ball for about 10 mins, Raiders were on the ropes, Storm earned penalties and played conservatively – went for penalty goals instead of tries. The conservative play cost them in the end.

Raiders crossed for 2 tries and had a 3rd try correctly denied (rapana infront of kicker and inside 10). Overall Raiders looked more threatening to score tries.

Hudsons penalty of 8 games is deserved. The hysterics asking for 20 weeks or a life ban were over the top. I’d just like to point out that rugby league is a very forgiving game:

* You can seriously assault people and still play the game
* An entire team can take peptides and be banned for 2 or 3 games
* You can take recreational dr-gs and become an immortal
* You can do dodgy things in a NZ hotel room and work in the media

As Cameron Munster would say, what happens on the field stays on the field…except when the cameras catch it.

Hudson Young cops eight-game ban for eye contact

The over reaction and hyperbole is extreme from these commentators. Hudson’s actions were stupid considering he already served a ban, but he did not actually gouge his eyes, the ‘victim’ stood up as if nothing had happened. Compare that to how Farah and Munster reacted, both were very angry and agitated with what had been done to them.

Was it an eye gouge? I don’t think so. Was it some sort of facial, or rubbish on the face, or raking fingers over the face? Most likely.

Hysteria meets inconsistency: Hudson Young thrown to the wolves

Unwritten rule? Pretty sure you’ll find there is a written rule that you cannot attack another players face and he will be punished.

Hysteria meets inconsistency: Hudson Young thrown to the wolves

Lock him in for a bench utility spot.

Is Jack's Origin selection black and Wight?

Words matter and words have meaning. I once saw a comment on twitter that a player was killing the opposing team, natually I called the police immediately. As you know, the word “killing”, coupled with the opposing team name suggested an unlawful mass murder, a very reasonable jump to make. Remember, words matter.

James Faulkner's gaffe demonstrated a lack of awareness

I think Gavin Reynolds has been unlucky to be caught up in this and cut for his incorrect forward pass call. Sure, it was a mistake that denied a try, but I wouldn’t call it an absolute howler, Leilua was creeping across field and he fired a long looping pass almost perpendicular to the sideline – not forward, but there was enough there to fool the ref.

So what exactly has he been punished for?
Calling a pass forward when it wasn’t? No – this is not uncommon, but missing forward passes is probably more common.
Calling a pass forward that denied a try? No – but getting closer, I don’t think ref mistakes denying tries always result in demotions.
Calling a pass forward that denied a try, during a close game, in a game that also featured the touchie flag debacle resulting in a huge media frenzy magnifying this call? YES! He’s guilty of making the wrong call at the wrong time.

Punished for the pressure surrounding the other incident rather than his mistake in isolation.

This does not look good, Todd

For BJ his origin opportunity has passed him by, always had too many errors in his game.

As for his attitude, BJ is a trash talker – no doubt about it, but I have no idea why he’s been singled out in this case. Sterlo and Gus Gould both had a dig at him when players have been like this for years, Latrell Mitchell and Dylan walker are a couple of players that immediately come to mind for their niggle and trash talk. If the Morris boys are going to poke a bear, you can be damn sure he’s gonna bite back!

Attitude, not ability, holding back Leilua from Origin selection

Yeah I don’t get why Sterlo and Gus Gould both got stuck into him, why this incident and why now?? My first thought was this is exactly what I see from Latrell Mitchell – yet we don’t hear a peep about it. As others pointed out Dylan Walker is another great example.

I’ll be watching origin closely tonight for when players start giving each other a gobfull and what the commentators have to say about it – my bet – they’ll say absolutely nothing.

Attitude, not ability, holding back Leilua from Origin selection

The reaction is because we’re meant to be above this. The list of notable ball tamperers share one thing in commong – they’re from all those other cheating foreign teams! We always had the moral high ground (barely, with the way we conduct our sledging), never the less we *had* the high ground, we no longer do. Right now New Zealand appears to be the pinnacle of fair play which is a disgrace!!

Be honest: Everyone knew the Baggy Greens have been cheating for years

Hi Tim,

I won’t calm down because we were meant to be above this. You’ve compiled a list of ball-tamperers that share one thing in common – they’re not from our team, they’re from those cheating foreign teams that aren’t good enough to beat us fairly so they resort to their cheating ways. We always had the moral high ground (barely, with the way we conduct our sledging), never the less we *had* the high ground, we no longer do. Right now New Zealand appears to be the pinnacle of fair play which is a disgrace!!

I don’t want Steve Smith rubbed out of the game, his punishment of a one game ban is similar to the other bans, I’m fine with that. But stripping him of the captaincy would be a far greater punishment! He’s not a fit captain, he is supposed to set the tone for team behaviour and that behaviour is now exposed as being awful.

Calm yourselves people: Steve Smith’s behaviour isn’t that unusual

Does he have a manager? If so you’d think his manager has pitched him to all NRL clubs? So why is no one biting? Is his image that badly damaged that no one would take a punt on him? There must be a wooden spoon contender that could use a good half. Is his asking price too much? Sooooo many questions! Can you answer some of these Tim?

Todd Carney should get one more go

He didn’t say Ball was the weak link, infact he said Ball, Ingram and Kuzma were the future. There’s no doubting Ball is athletic, but his shooting percentages are terrible, like worst in the NBA terrible – FG 32.1%, 3P 24.6%, FT 47.1%. This is way worse than his college shooting form but should improve over time. Other poor shooters like Rondo or Rubio have still had excellent careers, just don’t expect him to make the all rookie first team…lock him in for the second team 😉

From the Ritz to a promising rubble: The Lakers’ future is bright and unsure

Looking back at Shillingtons send off for a headbutt is interesting. The headbutt didn’t make much contact, didn’t hurt Woods at all and you could probably find similar footage of niggling headbutts during tackles and scrums that go completely unpunished. But it’s the fact that it was the 79th minute that is most telling – the game is almost over so the ref feels bold enough to make a send off, if it’s the 9th minute there’s NO WAY he sends off Shillo. Looking at Papalli shoulder charging Dugan you have a much better case for a send off, it’s an illegal shoulder charge that rubs Dugan out of the game.

Why was Sia Soliola not sent off? Ask Tony Archer
